Abstract:Background: Tissue microarray has been used more frequently in relevant study of cancer in recent years, but its use in the study of gastric adenocarcinoma is still seldom. Aims: To study the expressions and its clinical significances of E-cadherin and β-catenin in gastric adenocarcinoma, para-cancerous tissue and normal mucosal tissue. Methods: 102 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma, 97 cases of para-cancerous tissue and 98 cases of normal mucosal tissue were made into three pieces of tissue microarray containing 282 dots, 156 dots and 156 dots, respectively. Expressions of E-cadherin and β-catenin were detected by immunohistochemical staining. Results: Abnormal expression rates of expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin in gastric adenocarcinoma (84.0%, 76.0%) were significantly higher than those in para-cancerous tissue (26.3%, 23.2%) and normal mucosal tissue (6.2%, 7.3%) (P=0.000, P=0.000). Abnormal expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin was correlated with the gastric cancer cell differentiation (P=0.004, P=0.020) and depth of invasion (P=0.033, P=0.024), but not with other clinicopathological parameters. Conclusions: Abnormal expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin occurred frequently in gastric adenocarcinoma, which may be the early event in gastric carcinogenesis; and it is correlated with gastric cancer cell differentiation and the ability of invasion. Investigation on the expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin is the objective indexes in judging the grade of gastric cancer cell differentiation and depth of invasion.
