Abstract:Deploying real WSN testbed provides a realistic testing environment, and allows users to get more accurate test results. However, deploying real testbed is highly constrained by the available budget when the test needs a large scale WSN environment. By leveraging the advantages of both simulators and real testbed, an approach that integrates simulation environment and testbed can effectively solve both scalability and accuracy issues. In this paper, we present NetTopo for providing both simulation and visualization functions to assist the investigation of algorithms in WSNs. One case study is described to prove the effectiveness of NetTopo.

Abstract:Nowadays the most salient trend with network is the increase in data rates while there is significant effort in developing new protocols and services. However, the traditional network devices which are custom logic based or pure software based, could hardly satisfy both performance and flexibility requirements. To overcome this obstacle, the parallel and programmable network processors have been involved into processing path of routers (switch). Besides network processors which are built on ASIP technology and optimized for network applications, possess the characteristic of hardware and software solution simultaneously. Network processors extend the classic store-and-forward pattern to store-process-and-forward, which makes room for complex QoS control and payload processing. In this paper, the related research work is introduced from two aspects, system and application, and the system issues and challenges of network processors are analyzed. In the end, the future evolution of network processors and associate researches are also speculated.

Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory

Abstract:Network processor, a kind of highly integrated programmable circuit, attempts to strike a balance between performance and flexibility in network processing. Research on architecture design and system implementation concerning network processors requires powerful simulation tools. Many existing methods use execution-driven full-system simulators to build a virtual target platform running unmodified application binaries. However, they oversimplify the network environment in which the whole system is working. To address this issue, we develop a performance tool named Network Porcessor Network Simulator (NPNS) built upon a well-known network simulator—ns-2. This tool combines those full-system simulators to provide a unified framework for processor and software design within a network context. This article presents the principle, architecture and implementation issues of NPNS. To demonstrate the validity of the tool, two examples using the NPNS prototype to simulate the Intel IXP1200 network processor are illustrated and their performance is further evaluated. The performance results reveal the importance of considering network context for improving the accuracy of network models and achieving more realistic network simulations.

Abstract:A typical wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large number of sensor nodes, and is envisioned to support a wide range of applications. As most sensor nodes are operating unattended for a long lifetime, the need for robust software is very important for networked sensor systems. Simulation of networked sensor systems should be an important phase in application development. In this paper, we provide a detailed technical review of sensor network simulators. We not only list existing sensor simulators in the literature, but also summarize each simulator's advantages and disadvantages. Hence, simulator users can benefit from this summarization. We provide a taxonomy of various simulators based on the simulator architecture, the simulated CPU model, radio model, and sensor model. We point out some challenges of sensor network simulation, and summarize some recent techniques to address these challenges. Simulator developers can benefit from these descriptions. Finally, we further highlight some guidelines from both simulator users' perspective and simulator developers' perspective, and give case studies on how to select a simulator.

Abstract:Researching aspects of parallel architecture and system design concerning network processors requires excellent simulation tools. In this paper, we develop a tool called NPNS on top of a widely used network simulator ns-2, which combines full-system simulators to provide a unified framework for processor and software design within a network context. In this article, we describe the architecture of NPNS and its implementation issues. In addition, an example of simulating a multi-threaded Intel IXP1200 network processor with NPNS is illustrated.

Abstract:The OpenFlow implementations (SDNs) have been deployed increasingly on varieties of networks in research institutions as well as commercial institutions. To develop an OpenFlow implementation, it is required to understand the performance of the network. A few benchmark tools (e.g., Cbench and OFlops) can be used to measure the network performance, while these tools take considerable time to simulate traffic behaviors and generate the required results, therefore extending the development time. In this paper, we present an analytical model, which is based on stochastic network calculus theory, for evaluating the performance of switch to controller. The previous studies show that stochastic network calculus can provide realistic emulation of real network traffic behaviors. Our model is evaluated by using both simulation tool and realistic testbed. The results show the stochastic network calculus based analysis model can realistically measure the network performance of the end-to-end properties between controller and switch.

Abstract:The main points of protocol performance testing is analyzed in this paper. The QoS(quality of service) of network protocol is described with a formal tool, stochastic Petri nets. Furthermore, the rules from the SPN(stochastic Petri nets) models to test suite of TTCN(tree and tabular combined notation) are proposed, and a performance test case is generated from the SPN models.

Abstract:It is a very popular approach to use simulators to evaluate the performance and cost of different network-on-chips(NOCs) for determining the best network designs and configurations.Most of the traditional simulators are of single thread,which is a computational bottleneck of these simulators because single thread renders them cannot take advantages of new chip multiprocessors.A parallel NOC simulator,ParaNSim,is designed and implemented in this paper.The simulator supports large-scale NOC simulation,and can effectively reduce the simulation time for large-scale NOC simulation.Experimental result shows that the speedup of parallel simulation can reach 210% on average,and 250% the maximum.

Abstract:Aiming at realizing efficient performance evaluation of NoC,and reducing SoC(system-on-chip) development period,this paper proposed a new high-level,high-efficiency,cycle-accurate NoC simulation platform.Different from conventional tools,it supported evaluation for both 2D mesh and ring topologies and virtual channel extension in router structure design.It efficiently gave performance results,including average latency,throughput and energy consumption.Experimental results demonstrate that this simulation platform can simulate NoC behavior and obtain performance evaluation results,which provides high-efficiency verification method for NoC design and optimization.

Abstract:New protocols and architectures for next generation Internet is an important part of current network research. Experimental verification based on physical equipment is the main approach to examine the feasibility and performance of the new technologies. With concerns of that software and traditional network facility based verification methods have some disadvantages. This paper proposes a device design solution to support network innovation experiment. Based on Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA), decoupling the data plane, control plane and using high performance network and storage modules, this paper can achieve the goals required by network innovation studies such as reprogrammability, high performance, flexibility of control and management, implements the design on TNIP network processing card. Experimental results show that TNIP can handle up to 16 Gb/s network traffic and can be used to deploy network innovation experiments.

Every ISP always keeps one eye on the design and implementation of network accounting management system on high-speed network. This paper presents a design and implementation of network accounting management system based on network processor. This system provides functions of user access control and usage billing in a Gigabit Ethernet campus network. Its high performance, stability and reliability are proved both in lab testing and in practical operation.

Abstract:Considering the protocol and address translation is a heavy load, and the transition gateway based on NAT-PT (network address translation-protocol translation) has a high demand on system performance. With the network bandwidth upgrading gradually, current exiting NAT-PT gateway can not meet the requirement of wire-speed forwarding. A design of NAT-PT gateway based on IXP network processors was proposed. In this design, the distribution of NAT-PT traffic on computing complexity was well considered. Some problems, which are closely related to system performance, were analyzed, and the optimized technologies for these problems were proposed. The results of performance testing in simulation and real environments indicate that the proposed gateway can meet the requirement of wire-speed forwarding.

Abstract:The emulation and functional validation are essential to the assessment of the correctness and performance of networks-on-chip architecture. A flexible hardware/software networks-on-chip open platform (NoCOP) emulation framework is designed and implemented for exploring the on-chip interconnection network architectures. An instruction set simulator and universal serial bus communicator control and configure the emulation parameters and process that are running on the host computer as active elements in the emulation framework. The experimental results show that the proposed emulation/verification framework can speed up the simulation, preserve the cycle accuracy and decrease the usage of the resources of field programmable gate array.

Abstract:Network on Chip (NoC) is a new paradigm to address the challenges of System on Chip design. In this paper, we present a fast multi-core virtual platform which integrates OVP processor model, TLM-2.0 and NoC, to evaluate the system performance. We develop a unicast network with mesh topology and a multicast network with ring topology. In addition, Data Encryption Standard (DES) algorithm is implemented on the virtual platform, and the experiment results show that the ring topology is 32% faster than the mesh topology in Local Area Network (LAN) communication.

Abstract:Traffic measurement is important in network management, accounting, worm detection, etc. It becomes more and more difficult today and cannot keep pace with the increasing speed of today's internet. Many new algorithms and hardware have been proposed to solve this problem. Network Processors, known for its nice tradeoff between performance and programming flexibility, are chosen as the platform. The goal of this paper is to find a suitable algorithm based on NPs to handle high speed network traffic measurement. Four algorithms, Raw measurement, Sampling, Multi-stage Filter and Multi-Resolution Space Code Bloom Filter (MRSCBF) are implemented and evaluated on Intel's IXP 2400 network processor. The results reveal that Sampling and Multi-stage Filters can fully exploit the parallel and heterogeneous architecture of network processor, so are suitable for high speed network traffic measurement on the network processor platform. MRSCBF, on the other hand, is not so efficient on network processors because of its complex process and frequent memory access.

Abstract:Network Simulation is a new network design and optimization technology, it can provide a reliable quantitative basis for networkpsilas planning and design, and it also can verify the actual project or compare a number of different designs. In this paper, we introduce OPNET network simulation softwarepsilas main features, modeling mechanism and simulation steps. Given an example for a home network, we give steps of Network simulation under OPNET environment. According to the different settings, the simulation obtains network performance index of diversiform circumstances. The experimental result shows that OPNET network simulation software could accurately analyze network performance and behavior.

Abstract:Testing is needed to evaluate the function and performance of network chips; however, there are few papers on test methods for network chips. This paper presents an test structure and five test methods for network chips according to the position of points of control and observation. The five test methods are a centralized test method, a distributed test method, a remote test method, a traversing test method, and a loopback test method. These test methods were used to evaluate the function, interoperability and performance of OC48c POS (packet over SONET) chips. The test methods provide a broad range of tests for network chip testing.
