Abstract:Based on the JJG 1206-2006 frequency standard and the digital clock,the remote calibration standard and existing hardware in Time and Frequency Departments of Shanghai Institute of Measurement and Testing Technology,the calibration of remote frequency source was realized through the calibration data analysis software program and algorithm design method.The results of a database were established and the two algorithms in calibration standards were compared.Results in the final calibration proved to be reliable.

Abstract:The measurement and inspection methods based on ultrasonic technology usually request accurate measuring the propagation time of ultrasonic wave in media.In accordance with the technology of ultrasonic nondestructive pressure measurement,a sing-around device was developed for measuring the propagation time of ultrasonic wave.In measurement,the signal received by the receiving probe is output through the gate circuit and then re-triggers the transmitting probe.In order to enhance the stability and sensitivity,highly stable circuits are adopted in the device.The results of experiment show that by using this device,0.5ns of time change of propagation can be detected.

Abstract:Frequency is a very important characteristic quantity in power systems. Frequency measuring acts a very important role in power system measuring equipments. This paper presents a useful method for frequency measuring. This method is easy to be implemented with small calculation, high precision and a good real-time performance. The validity of this proposed method is verified through numerical simulation in the case of taking account of original phase, the bits of A/D and the sampling frequency. The results prove that this method has some practical value.

Abstract:High-precision time interval measurement is widely used in time synchronization, satellite navigation, laser ranging, and nuclear electronics. The resolution and accuracy of the currently used time counter are about 25 and 100 ps, respectively. A new time interval measurement method, in which the signal under test is used to trigger a sampler and the phase of the reference sinusoid signal is sampled to record the time stamp of the test signal, was put forward. Then, the sampled reference sine signal's phase is estimated by the interpolated fast Fourier transform (FFT), and 1-ps resolution and accuracy can theoretically be achieved. The test experiment of the prototype instrument shows that a 10-ps accuracy has been reached. If the hardware prototype is improved to reduce trigger jitter and sampling clock jitter, the measurement instrument may reach 1-ps accuracy. The measurement system is used not only for time interval measurement but also for period measurement and even modulation domain analysis.

Abstract:Using the time domain antenna array is very helpful for improving the performance of the ultra-wideband radar.It is very necessary to study the law of transmitting and receiving of the antenna array.Using the technology of virtual instrument,adopting the software kit of the LabView,and using the idea of module design,we construct the auto-measurement system for time-domain antenna array based on an oscillograph and a rotation table working harmoniously.Analyzing the test data,and comparing the results with the simulation result from FDTD,we get the valuable conclusions about the time domain antenna array.

Abstract:A set of apparatus for accurate measurement of femtosecond optical pulses is established in National Institute of Metrology, which includes autocorrelation apparatus and spectral phase interferometer. The result of autocorrelation can agree excellently with that of the Spectral Phase Interference for Direct-Electric Reconstruction (SPIDER).The measurement services of femtosecond optical pulses could be provide with our apparatus. This research would promote the progress of generations, measurements and applications of femtosecond optical pulses.

Abstract:A time-to-digital converter (TDC)with high precision based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA)was presented in this paper.The method combining coarse counting and fine time measurement was adopted in the design.The coarse counting depended on a good performance binary counter and the fine time measurement was realized by using a fast carry chain to implement the time interpolation.For improving measure resolu-tion,the method of Wave-Union was also employed in the design to divide the ultra-wide bin width.Various tests were implemented to check the performance of TDC,and some excellent results were achieved.The test results show that the time resolution (FWHM)of TDC is less than 50 ps within a wide dynamic range greater than 200 ms. The differential non-linearity (DNL)is in the range of - 1-1.5 LSB,and the integral non-linearity (INL)is in the range of -1.5-1.5 LSB.The TDC will be used in In-beam position emission tomography (PET)equipment for time-of-flight measurement.

Abstract:To measure frequency of the atmospheric pressure by using the electrically-induced resonator pressure transducer,multi-period measurement method is employed,which obtains accurate results by dividing signal frequency.Accurate atmospheric pressure is obtained via temperature compensation with the environmental temperature acquired from the ADC on P89LPC935.The prerequisite for using this period measuring method is choosing a crystal oscillator with its accuracy better than 5 ppm.Thereby the minimum measuring error can be controlled within 0.001 1 μs.The presented measuring method is successfully used in the automatic weather station developed through our cooperation with Henan Weather Bureau.The two important conditions for using the multi-period measurement method to measure a signal period(frequency) accurately and fast are: the signal has highly-stable frequency and is a continuous signal;the crystal oscillator of the single chip is an external highly-accurate and highly-stable crystal oscillator.

Review of Scientific Instruments

Abstract:Waveform digitization at sampling rates up to several giga-samples per second is one of the approaches to achieve high-precision time measurements. In recent years, achieving high precision at lower sampling rates has emerged as a significant research topic. In this article, we focus on time measurement electronics, in which the bandpass sampling method is applied to obtain high precision at a sampling rate of roughly 100 MSps. An analog front-end circuit is designed, in which the input pulse signal is bandpass-filtered and amplified before sampling. A pipelined real-time time extraction algorithm is designed using the techniques of interpolation and cross correlation. A 1024-point fast Fourier transform algorithm is adopted to implement the cross correlation operation. Four time measurement channels are implemented in a mid-range field-programmable gate array, and the measurement rate of 116 kHz is achieved. Tests are conducted to evaluate the performance of the timing system. The typical RMS precision is better than 0.4 ps.

Abstract:High-precision time-interval measurement is a fundamental technique in many advanced applications, including time and distance metrology, particle physics, and ultra-precision machining. However, many of these applications are confined by the imprecise time-interval measurement of electrical signals, restricting the performance of the ultimate system to a few picoseconds, which limits ultra-high-precision applications. Here, we demonstrate an optical means of the time-interval measurement of electrical signals that can successfully achieve femtosecond (fs)-level precision. The setup is established using the optical-frequency-comb (OFC)-based linear optical sampling technique to realize timescale-stretched measurement. We achieve the measurement precision of 82 fs for a single LOS scan measurement and 3.05 fs for the 100-times average with post-processing, which is three orders of magnitude higher than the results of older electrical methods. The high-precision time interval measurement of electrical signals can substantially improve precision measurement technologies.

Abstract:In order to meet the needs of sensor miniaturization, this paper implements a high integrative frequency measurement method in a low-end Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). This method combines the simple structure of equal precision frequency measurement method and the high precision of TDC. The TDC uses tapped-delay line (TDL) structure and uses the wave union A method to reduce resource consumption and improve the resolution of time measurements. Tests have been done to verify the feasibility of this method, and the frequency measurement precision can reach Milli Hertz within 1s. This method has a broad prospect of low cost and miniaturization application.

Abstract:In order to meet the measurement needs of function time of electric igniter,a new function time testing system was designed, by using the fiber as sensor for collecting light signals, and FPGA for timing. A type of igniter was tested by using this system, then the obtained data was processed by Origin and compared to that from the target line method. The test results showed that the accuracy of the designed fiber testing method is higher than that of the target line method, and it is stable and credible.
