Abstract:The methods and techniques of land resource suitability evaluation based on GIS and spatial datasets of multi-factors have been studied in this paper. The North China-South Liaoning region was selected as study area.Ten factors relating to climate,topography,irrigation,soil type and vegetable were selected as evaluation indicators according to the regional characteristics of physical geography and land resource system,which including accumulated temperature equal and above 10℃,terrain slope,bare rocks,hydrology and drainage,irrigation conditions,soil erosion,virtual soil thickness,soil texture,soil sali-alkalization,and vegetation index.All the original dataset resources for these ten factors have good qualities and high spatial resolutions.The accumulated temperature equal and above 10℃ derived from the CERN has the spatial resolution of 1km~2.The slope data were calculated by the SRTM-DEM data,which has the spatial resolution of about 90m.The bare rocks and soil sali-alkalization data which came form the land-use database of RESDC has the spatial resolution of 1km~2 either. The soil erosion factor has been expressed by gully density,which was calculated by the SRTM-DEM data either.Datasets for the hydrology-drainage factor and soil texture factor were derived from the digital datasets of the Chinese(1∶1 000 000) Land Resource Maps.The irrigation conditions was expressed by the distance from rivers and lakes,and was calculated based on the(1∶1 000 000) dataset of hydrology systems.The virtual soil thickness data was prepared via the combination between(1∶1 000 000) soil types' data and attribute dataset of soil profiles.The vegetation index data was derived from the SPOT-VGT data which has the spatial resolution of 1km~2.Based on all these datasets and supported by the GIS techniques,especially the spatial analysis techniques that based on the raster data model in the ESRI-ArcGIS software,the quality grading datasets with the spatial resolution of 1km~2 for the ten factors were derived.Then,the characteristics of the regional land limiting factors,land limiting classes,land quality grades,and land suitability groups have been studied based on the quality grading raster datasets and spatial analysis techniques.The basic evaluation unit was the 1km~2 grid cell,and a stepwise evaluation flow chart was designed and applied.The datasets of all the factors,the matching criterions and the particular analysis techniques have been combined together for every step of the evaluation.The supplementary datasets,such as the geomorphology data,the land-use data and the LUCC(land use and land cover change) data were prepared and referenced during the evaluation.Good results have been figured out for the case study area based on the multi-factor spatial datasets and the designed methods and techniques.It argued that,all together,the accurate spatial datasets of the evaluation factors,the reasonable evaluation methods and the ingenious evaluation techniques have assured the efficiency and precision for the land suitability evaluation.And,it turned out that soil texture,hydrology and drainage,terrain slope,and irrigation conditions were the most important land limiting factors in the study area.
