Abstract:An empirical study on the mutual funds performance in the Chinese market by using the DEA approach is presented in this paper. The sample data include 24 open-end funds and 54 closed-end funds in years 2004 and 2005. It is found that most of the mutual funds in the Chinese market are inefficient. There is no obvious persistence and any scale effect on the funds' performance, but some correlations between the performances and the investment styles exist. It is also found that the closed-end funds' efficiency scores are lower than those of the open-end funds, and the mid-scale funds receive highest efficiency scores during most of the sample period. Besides, the bond funds' efficiency scores are close to 100%, higher than those of the stock funds and the balanced funds in the sample period. It is also concluded that Chinese mutual funds' comparative performance has a close relationship with the Chinese equity market environment. Furthermore, most of the open-end funds in the Chinese market experienced decreasing returns to scale, but most of the closed-end funds experienced increasing returns to scale during the sample period.
