Abstract:Urbanization is one of the most significant forms of land use change. It has profound impacts on regional hydrological processes. The city of Shenzhen,China has been undergoing urbanization process at an unprecedented speed since its establishment as a Special Economic Zone in 1980.This study examined the impacts of land use change on hydrological processes in the Buji watershed located in the center area of the Shenzhen city by integrating Remote Sensing science,GIS technology and hydrological model.Land use change of the watershed was firstly measured and analyzed based on classification of Landsat images of 1980,1988,1994,2000 and 2005.Secondly,the SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model was calibrated and validated for the study area.Following that, five scenarios were created by taking one of the above five land use patterns to present the land use status throughout the 26 years from 1980 to 2005.The actual daily weather records, soil and DEM were also used as model inputs. The results show that there had been a dramatic land use change in the Buji watershed from 1980 to 2005.Percentage of agricultural land uses(cropland, forest, shrub and lawn) dropped from 93.54% to 34.79%,while urban land uses increased from 1.65% to 54.25%.Besides,land use changes in the urbanization process greatly affected catchment hydrological processes.Annual evapotranspiration, soil water content and groundwater flow decreased for 42.09mm,28.10mm and 279.74mm respectively, while surface runoff increased for 431.97mm.Inter-annual fluctuation characteristics of these parameters also changed significantly.Increase of urban land uses and decrease of agricultural land uses were found to be the two major factors for hydrological processes changes, according to the statistics of major hydrological components and the spatial pattern of the hydrological parameters.
