Abstract:Four catenanes having a tetrathiafulvalene unit in the biscyclic macrocycle and cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) in the second macrocycle are described. The TTF units locked inside the cyclophane cages do not isomerize even in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. One of the four catenanes is shown on the right.

Abstract:A new synthetic methodology for the synthesis of 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenes from ortho-aryl alkynyl benzyl alcohols and arenes via a Tf2O-mediated formal [5 + 2] annulation reaction has been achieved. From this transformation, structurally diverse 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenes were achieved in moderate to good yields. This transformation probably involves an intermolecular Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation and a subsequent intramolecular 7-endo-dig cyclization in one pot, highlighting the high efficiency, regioselectivity, and step-economy of this protocol.

Abstract:Monomacrocycles of the two electron donors tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and 1,5-dioxynaphthalene have been prepared, together with three symmetric TTF-containing bismacrocycles, two of which have been prepared by a two-step deprotection-cyclization approach. By utilizing the donor-acceptor interactions of these donors with the dipyridinium dication of 1,1'-[1,4-phenylene-bis (methylene)]bis-4,4'-bipyridinium bis(hexafluorophosphate), [2]catenanes were synthesized. In the case of one of the bismacrocycles it was possible to isolate a minor amount of a bis [2]catenane. The catenanes were characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, electrospray mass spectroscopy (ESMS) and their fragmentation in the gas phase was also analysed by collisional activation (ESMS/MS).Also, one tetramacrocyclic compound, the first TTF-based ribbon compound, has been synthesized. This control shows complex electrochemical properties.
Self‐assembling Tetrathiafulvalene‐based Rotaxanes and Catenanes

Abstract:A general stepwise approach is described for the preparation of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based linear and mono- and dimacrocyclic compounds incorporating one of two 1,4-dioxyphenylene, 9,10-dioxyanthrylene or 1,5- or 2,6-dioxynaphthylene units from readily available starting materials. By utilizing, the pi-pi stacking interactions of the TTF unit with the dipyridinium dication of 1,1'-[1,4-phenylenebis (methylene)] bis-4,4'-bipyridinium bis(hexafluorophosphate), a rotaxane and two [2]catenanes were synthesized starting from the linear monomacrocyclic compounds, respectively. From the dioxypheylene-based di-macrocycle, three [3]pseudocatenanes (trans, cis, and a mixture of cis/trans isomers) were obtained with the trails compound as the major product. From the dioxyanthrylene dimacrocycle, only the trans-[3]pseudocatenane was obtained. Catenane products were formed quantitatively from the 1.5-dioxynaphthylene dimacrocycle ina template-directed reaction, affording a trans-[3]pseudo-catenane together with a [4]pseudocatenane (mixture of cis/trans isomers). From the 2.6-dioxynaphthylene dimacrocycle, a cis-[3]pseudocatenane was obtained as the major product and a trans-[3]pseudocatenane as the minor one. For the [3]pseudocatenanes (i.e., both the eis and trans catenanes). in which the TTF units were clamped by the tetracationic macrocycle, isomerizations were completely prevented even in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. All new rotaxanes and catenanes were characterized by electrospray mass spectrometry, and the cis- and trans-[3]pseudocatenanes were additionally investigated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical and spectral properties of the rotaxane and the catenanes are reported. Catenane formation increases the redox potentials of the TTF unit. The results demonstrate the versatility of TTF as a building block in the construction of supramolecular structures.
Self-Assembling Calix[4]Arene [2]catenanes. Preorganization, Conformation, Selectivity, and Efficiency

Abstract:A novel class of preorganized U-shape calix[4]arene clefts, dicationic salts 3a,c,e.2Cl, 3b.2PF(6)(), and 3f.2Br, consisting of one cone calix[4]arene and two bipyridine residues being linked by an aliphatic chain, have been designed and synthesized as precursors for self-assembly of calix[4]arene [2]catenanes by utilizing pi-stacking interactions between the hydroquinone and bipyridinium units. Conformationally flexible 6.2PF(6)() and cone 10.2Cl, whose conformation is fixed by two propyloxy groups on the lower rim, were also prepared in order to explore the effects of conformation and hydrogen bonding of the calix[4]arene moiety on self-assembly. For all reactions, bis-p-phenylene-34-crown ether-10 (11) was employed as the donor component. Alternate cone [2]catenane 13.4Cl is obtained in 8% yield from reaction of ethylene-incorporating 3a.2Cl and 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene (12a). Three cone and one conformationally flexible [2]catenanes were obtained in moderate to good yields from reactions of propylene-incorporating 3b.PF(6)() and 3c.2Cl with 12a, 1,3-bis(bromomethyl)benzene (12b) or 4,4'-(bromomethyl)biphenyl (12c). Both cone and partial cone [2]catenanes were generated in moderate yields from butylene-incorporating 3c.2Cl with four tert-butyl groups on the calix[4]arene moiety and with 12a. In contrast, only cone [2]catenane was obtained from similar tert-butyl-free cleft 3d.2Cl. Cone and conformationally flexible [2]catenanes were obtained in moderate yields, respectively, from the reactions of 3d.2Cl and 3e.2Cl with 12c. No catenanes were isolated from reaction of phenylene-incorporating 3f.2Br or 6.2Cl, whereas reaction of 10.2Cl afforded cone [2]catenane in low yield. It was demonstrated that hydrogen bonding, which may be destroyed after catenation, within the calix[4]arene moiety is crucial for efficient self-assembly of the [2]catenanes. The dynamic (1)H NMR and absorption spectra and luminescent properties of the [2]catenanes were investigated, which reveal that incorporation of calix[4]arene into the tetracationic cyclophane reduces pi-stacking interactions between the donor and acceptor units and catenation has substantial influence on conformational distributions of the calix[4]arene moiety. The results demonstrate the versatility of calix[4]arene derivatives as building blocks in the construction of supramolecular structures.

Abstract:A pnictogen‐assisted dynamic disulfide self‐assembly method provides PDI‐containing cyclophanes in a high‐yielding, efficient, and scalable reaction. The macrocycles show enhanced properties over monomers and linear congeners and can serve as hosts for electron‐rich guests. This work reports the synthesis and self‐assembly of perylene diimide (PDI)‐containing macrocycles designed for facile and high‐throughput production of shape‐persistent, macrocyclic organic electronic materials. Specifically, utilizing dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC), this work showcases ditopic thiols can be utilized as building blocks toward 3D materials with defined porosity, low‐lying unoccupied molecular orbitals, and intrinsic fluorescence. The PDI disulfide‐linked macrocycles are generated in a single step from the thiolic building block to yield dimeric through pentameric assemblies in overall 95% combined yield; moreover, following self‐assembly, the disulfide ensemble is sulfur extruded to the more kinetically stable thioether in 79% combined yield. The modular design suggests these methods can be used to easily self‐assemble other electronically active precursors for utility in porous macrocyclic materials where stepwise pathways may be laborious and/or low yielding.

Abstract:Self-assembly of a novel class of bis-imine-cyclometalated macrocycles [(Cp∗Ir)2(Ph–NC–Ph–CN–Ph)]2(4,4′-bipyridine)2·(OTf)4 (3a) and [(Cp∗Ir)2(Me–NC–Ph–CN–Me)]2(4,4′-bipyridine)2·(OTf)4 (3b) was directed by double-site C–H activations of aromatic bis-imine substrates. Two synthetic routes were established, using either (i) binuclear cyclometalated complexes (Cp∗Ir)2L1Cl2 (1a) and (Cp∗Ir)2L2Cl2 (1b) or (ii)4,4′-bipyridine(bpy)-bridged complex (Cp∗IrCl2)2(bpy) (2) as starting materials. All the products were characterized by IR, 1H NMR and EA. Isomers were found in macrocyclic complexes, which were thermodynamically stable from reversible transformation in days. Highly robust structure of the cyclometalated macrocycles was indicated by the existence of stable isomer pairs. One isomer of 3b was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It was a rare case for half-sandwich metallosupramolecular macrocycles that weak interactions between macrocycles and OTf ions were fully captured in detail, and were demonstrated to be essential for the maintenance of tunnel structures of macrocycles in crystal packing.

Abstract:Radical templation centered around a heterotrisradical tricationic inclusion complex DB•+⊂DAPQT2(•+), assembled from an equimolar mixture of a disubstituted 4,4'-bipyridinium radical cation (DB•+) and an asymmetric cyclophane bisradical dication (DAPQT2(•+)), affords a symmetric [2]catenane (SC·7PF6) and an asymmetric [2]catenane (AC·7PF6) on reaction of the 1:1 complex with diazapyrene and bipyridine, respectively. Both these highly charged [2]catenanes have been isolated as air-stable monoradicals and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. X-ray crystallography suggests that the unpaired electrons are delocalized in each case across two inner 4,4'-bipyridinium (BIPY2+) units forming a mixed-valence (BIPY2)•3+ state inside both [2]catenanes, an observation which is in good agreement with spin-density calculations using density functional theory. Electrochemical studies indicate that by replacing the BIPY2+ units in homo[2]catenane HC•7+-composed of two mechanically interlocked cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) rings-with "zero", one, and two more highly conjugated diazapyrenium dication (DAP2+) units, respectively, a consecutive series of five, six, and seven redox states can be accessed in the resulting SC·7PF6 (0, 4+, 6+, 7+, and 8+), HC·7PF6 (0, 2+, 4+, 6+, 7+, and 8+), and AC·7PF6 (0, 1+, 2+, 4+, 6+, 7+, and 8+), respectively. These unique [2]catenanes present a promising prototype for the fabrication of high-density data memories.

Abstract:A stepwise self-assembly protocol has been used to synthesize [2]- and [3]catenanes. Firstly, binuclear Cp*Rh/Ir-directed (Cp*=pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) pseudorotaxanes were prepared through self-assembly, driven by donor-acceptor interactions between electron-deficient naphthalenediimide (NDI) units and an electron-rich crown ether. Subsequently, the pre-organized pseudorotaxanes were applied as tectons for self-assembly of [2]- and [3]catenanes by combination with very simple linkers. The structures of the catenanes were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and elemental analysis.

Abstract:A series of purely organic macrocycles and catenanes can be self-assembled by condensing a cationic bisaldehyde compound with a series of dihydrazide linkers in weakly acidic water. On one hand, the macrocycles could be generated as the predominant products under the condition of low concentration or less polar media. In the presence of a guest template, these macrocycles could even be obtained in close to quantitative yields, allowing them to be isolated as pure solid products without the need for chromatographic purification. On the other hand, [2]catenanes could be obtained as the major products in more concentrated solutions or more polar media where hydrophobic effects are enhanced. Once purified, both macrocycles and catenanes exhibit remarkable kinetic stability in both the solid state and neutral aqueous solution at room temperature. By means of selective host-guest recognition, one of the macrocyclic products is capable of resolving a pair of hydrocarbon isomers, namely phenanthrene and anthracene, which have similar properties and can hardly be separated by commonly used approaches.

Abstract:Cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) represent a significant challenge for the synthesis of mechanically interlocked architectures, because they lack heteroatoms, which precludes traditional active and passive template methods. To circumvent this problem and explore the fundamental and functional properties of CPP rotaxanes and catenanes, researches have resorted to unusual non-covalent and even to labor-intensive covalent template approaches. Herein, we report a ring-in-ring non-covalent template strategy that makes use of the surprisingly strong non-covalent inclusion of crown ethers into suitably sized CPPs. By threading a secondary ammonium salt through the crown ether and closing the third ring via Cu-AAC click reaction, we obtained a hetero-[3]catenane comprising [12]CPP, 24-crown-8 and a dibenzylammonium macrocycle. X-ray crystallography shed light on the ring-in-ring pre-organization and the [3]catenane topology was confirmed by NMR and MS-MS studies. Molecular simulations provided insights into the intriguing ring-vs.-ring-vs.-ring dynamics of the [3]catenane, which are highly dependent on the protonation state of the dibenzylammonium site. This ring-in-ring assembly strategy opens new avenues for the synthesis of complex CPP architectures and their use in functional supramolecular systems.

Abstract:We have discovered the first reaction of a substituted pentacene molecule as a dienophile. A surprisingly clean Diels-Alder self-coupling of Cl4Pn leads to a novel ladder polymer, poly(iptycene), which can be converted to a conducting carbon at relatively low temperature (600-900 degrees C). Theoretical calculations of the former reaction suggest a biradical asymmetric mechanism, despite highly symmetric reactants.

Abstract:Intramolecular three-centered hydrogen bonding has been used to induce dipyridyl anthranilamide 5 and diphenylacetylene anthranilamide 11 to adopt rigid straight conformation. Compound 5 reacted with Pd(dppp)(OTf)2 (12a) or Pt(dppp)(OTf)2 (12b) in dichloromethane to afford square metallocyclophanes 13a and 13b in 70% and 40% yield, respectively. In contrast, the reaction of 11 with 12b in dichloromethane gave triangular metallocyclophane 14 in 15% yield.

Abstract:Pentacosacyclene ( PC ) and pentacosacyclene tetraimide ( PCTI ) were obtained in concise syntheses involving radial extension of tridecacyclene. PC is an electron-rich hydrocarbon with a C 88 π-conjugated framework, whereas PCTI is electron-deficient and contains a C 96 N 4 core. PC and PCTI both have non-planar saddle-shaped conformations, and PC was found to self-assemble with C 60 to produce a uniquely structured supramolecular crystalline phase. In solution, PCTI undergoes eight single-electron reductions, while PC exhibits two reversible oxidations and three reversible reduction events. Chemically generated anions of PC and PCTI showcase extended near-infrared to infrared absorptions, with the lowest energy bands observed for at > 3200 nm for the PCTI monoanion and ca. 2800 nm for the PCTI dianion. The electronic and redox properties of pentacosacyclenes can be explained using molecular orbital and valence bond theories, as originating from changes in local aromaticity of five- and eight-membered rings.

Abstract:A set of two cyclic [2]catenane dimers were self-assembled in aqueous media via selective hydrazone condensation, by means of either one-pot or post-functionalization procedures. Considering that each catenane is composed of two thirty-six member rings, each of these two cyclic [2]catenane dimers can be considered as a ultra-large macrocycle that contains more than fifty atoms in the ring framework. This cyclization methodology relying on catenation thus represents a novel approach for accomplishing ultramacrocyclization in pure water.

Abstract:Oxime condensation as well as template-directed synthesis based on radical-pairing interactions were used in the synthesis of an octacationic [2]catenane in 20 % yield. The [2]catenane consists of two identical mechanically interlocked tetracationic macrocyclic components. Each of the ring components contains two dicationic bipyridinium (BIPY2+) functions. The structure of the [2]catenane was fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, as well as X-ray crystallography. In the oxidized state, the [2]catenane exists in a co-conformation where its four BIPY2+ units are located as far as possible from each other. Upon reduction of BIPY2+ into the radical state, namely BIPY+., we propose that the [2]catenane undergoes mechanical movement, driven by radical pairing interactions between these radical building blocks.
