Abstract:The oxidation of alcohols by N-bromosuccinimide with water as the reaction medium was developed.A series of alcohols including benzylic and aliphatic alcohols were converted into the corresponding ketones or aldehydes in high yields under catalyst-free conditions in water,except for some alcohols bearing donating substituents.However,the oxidation of less active alcohols could be carried out smoothly with Salen-Co(III) complex as a catalyst in a medium of water and CH2Cl2 mixture.
Promotional Synergistic Effect of Sn Doping into a Novel Bimetallic Sn-W Oxides/graphene Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Alcohols Using Aqueous H2O2 Without Additives

Abstract:A series of novel catalysts with bimetallic Sn-W oxides uniformly dispersed on reduced graphene oxide (denoted as Sn-W/RGO) were successfully prepared via a conventional one-pot hydrothermal method. Interestingly, it was found that the introduction of Sn could significantly improve the catalytic activities compared with single WO3/graphene catalyst for selective oxidation of alcohols using H2O2 without organic solvents and additives. Subsequently, the catalysts were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, Raman, FESEM, EDS, HRTEM, XPS and N-2 adsorption-desorption to investigate the promotional synergistic effect of Sn among catalyst structure, surface properties and catalytic performance. The results revealed that the incorporation of Sn had induced the formation of hexagonal WO3 with dominant exposed (001) and (200) planes, meanwhile, doping Sn could dramatically increase the specific surface area, change the structural properties and enhance the interactions between Sn-W oxides and graphene, which were beneficial to the improvement of catalytic performance. Additionally, reaction parameters (temperature, time, oxidant dosage and catalyst amount) were also explored. Both aryl and alkyl alcohols exhibited high conversion and selectivity to corresponding target products over the catalyst. And delightedly, the robust catalyst could be reused for five times without significant loss in catalytic efficiency. This work demonstrates the promotional synergistic effect of Sn in a novel Sn-doped WO3/RGO catalyst and makes it a promising candidate in green oxidation of alcohols under mild reaction conditions.
Facile Construction of Leaf-Like WO3 Nanoflakes Decorated on G-C3n4 Towards Efficient Oxidation of Alcohols under Mild Conditions

Abstract:Herein, a well-defined nanostructure with leaf-like WO3 nanoflakes decorated on g-C3N4 was constructed via a facile impregnation and subsequent annealing method. The prepared WO3/g-C3N4 exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of alcohols under mild conditions, and satisfactory yields to the corresponding carbonyl compounds were achieved without using non-green additives and organic solvents. It was found that the enhanced catalytic activity could be attributed to the enlarged specific surface area, the well-defined nanostructure, and the strong interactions between WO3 and g-C3N4. The distribution of WO3 nanoflakes on the g-C3N4 support increased the number of catalytically active sites for this reaction. XPS analysis suggested that a synergistic electron effect occurred because of the electron transfer from g-C3N4 to WO3. Moreover, the effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, oxidant amount and catalyst dosage on catalytic activity were investigated. Recycle studies showed that the catalyst could be readily recovered and no obvious decrease in catalytic efficiency was observed after seven cycles. The present catalytic system can afford a wide substrate scope for both aryl and alkyl alcohols with superior conversion and selectivity. Also, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed to better illustrate the catalytic process. This work might provide a facile construction of a well-defined WO3/g-C3N4 catalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols using a sustainable approach.
Enhanced Interfacial Interaction of Mesoporous N, S Co-Doped Carbon Supported WO3-WS2 for Green and Selective Oxidation of Alcohols

Abstract:WO3-WS2 supported on mesoporous N, S co-doped carbon were prepared via one-step molten-salt strategy, and an enhanced interfacial interaction between metal and carbon was formed, which boosted the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. Under green conditions (solvent: H2O, oxidant: H2O2, no base-additives), 96.2 % conversion and 97.0 % selectivity were achieved within 2 h. It was found that N, S co-doped carbon with abundant mesopores served as an excellent support, the pyrrolic and graphitic N species of carbon provided main anchoring sites for metal nanoparticles. Additionally, the N, S co-doped carbon support could effectively promote the distribution of metal species, and thereafter induced the formation of metal-carbon interfacial interaction. Such advantages resulted in the satisfactory reusability (negligible activity loss after six cycles) and remarkable catalytic activity. The scavenger tests and EPR results disclosed that center dot OH was the main oxidative species for this reaction. DFT calculations revealed that co-doping of N, S into carbon promoted the adsorption of benzyl alcohol, and the enhanced metal-carbon interaction reduced migration energy barrier of center dot OH on catalyst surface. In sum, this work provided some new insights into the interfacial interaction of mesoporous carbon supported metal catalyst for boosting the selective oxidation of alcohols.

Abstract:An environmentally benign oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and metal dodecanesulfonate salts as catalysts was conducted under solvent-free condition by biphasic catalysis. Ferric tridodecanesulfonate showed excellent catalytic activity exhibiting complete conversion of benzyl alcohol with 194.4mol/molcat turnover number (TON) and nearly 100% selectivity to benzaldehyde at ambient pressure and 90°C. This catalyst can be recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:The oxidation of alcohols into their corresponding carbonyl compounds represents a fundamentally important functional group transformation and occupies a prominent position in modern synthetic organic chemistry. Advances on the development of new oxidation reagents and methodologies and their applications in both targetand diversity-oriented synthesis have been regularly surveyed and constituted one of the most extensively and actively investigated areas of current organic synthesis. In this context, a plethora of oxidants, including those small organic molecule-based reagents (such as Dess-Martin periodinane, Swern oxidation, Moffatt oxidation, Corey-Kim oxidation, and SO3/pyridine) and metal-based systems (such as Jones reagent, Collins reagent, pyridinium chlorochromate, pyridinium dichromate, barium permanganate, manganese dioxide, ruthenium tetroxide, silver carbonate, and Oppenauer oxidation), have been identified to be powerful tools promoting conversion of various alcohols into their corresponding aldehyde or ketone products and thus evolved as a most important class of tools in synthetic chemists’ arsenal. A recent conceptually novel approach in alcohol oxidation chemistry, driven by the needs of process environmental compatibility and sustainability, has been exploring aerobic oxidation with highly active transition-metal catalysts (such as Pd, Ru, Fe, Cu, Pt, Au, Ir, Rh, etc.) and dioxygen gas as the terminal oxidant, their heterogeneously immobilized variants, and biomimetic systems. Despite these impressive advances, very few of the known methods are capable of offering truly economic and practical oxidation transformations across a broad spectrum of alcohol substrates. Many of these systems suffered from high reagent cost, air instability, employment of heavy metals or organic oxidants, stringent reaction conditions, operational complexity, functional group incompatibility, or production of wastes in their related processes. Thus, there is a continuing and increasing demand for new reagents that could help address the above-mentioned challenges. We herein report on an exceedingly simple secondary alcohol oxidation protocol that employs the widely available sodium hydride (NaH) as the oxidant.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones under mild reaction conditions has attracted considerable interest, since alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones can serve as synthetic precursors for various downstream chemical products. The major inherent challenges with this chemical oxidation are chemo- and regio-selectivity as well as environmental concerns, i.e. catalyst recycle, safety and cost. Using atmospheric oxygen as an environmentally friendly oxidant, we found that a metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed with Mn and a tetrazolate ligand (CPF-5) showed good activity and selectivity for the allylic oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Under the optimized conditions, we could achieve 98% conversion of cyclohexene and 87% selectivity toward cyclohexanone. The combination of a substoichiometric amount of TBHP (tert-butylhydroperoxide) and oxygen not only provides a cost effective oxidation system but significantly enhances the selectivity to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, outperforming most reported oxidation methods. This catalytic system is heterogeneous in nature, and CPF-5 could be reused at least five times without a significant decrease in its catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of alcohols to corresponding carbonyl compounds is essential in academia and industry. Benzil and BHMF have emerged as important classes of carbonyl compounds that have shown promising applications in materials and drug intermediates, especially in sustainable bio-based plastics. The traditional selective oxidation process generally uses equivalent amounts of oxidants or toxic reagents and generates a large amount of waste. Hence, it is very urgent to develop a greener, sustainable, practical, and industrially applicable selective oxidation process due to the environmental and sustainable requirements. Here, for the first time, we developed a water assistant base catalyzed selective oxidation of α-hydroxy ketone to the corresponding carbonyl compounds using air under mild reaction conditions. To the best of our knowledge, the only base K2CO3 catalytic selective oxidation of DHMF to BHMF under water using air as an oxidant has not been reported so far. Compared with the traditional selective oxidation, in this work, catalytic amounts of base, sustainable and green solvent water, and oxidant air were used for the first time.

Abstract:The drawbacks commonly observed in synthetic methods for alcohol oxidation often stem from the utilization of complex, toxic, hazardous, or wasteproducing oxidants. When sensitive or complex substrates bearing several functional groups are to be transformed, the selectivity of the oxidation becomes another significant challenge. Herein, a chemoselective and operationally simple catalyst-free and additive-free method is presented for the aerial oxidation of 1-phenylpropargyl and 1-phenylallyl alcohols to their corresponding ketones, requiring only solvent and visible light irradiation. The crucial role of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent lies in achieving high chemoselectivity. Singlet oxygen, whose formation is photosensitized by the substrate and the product, is captured by DMSO, thereby preventing the undesired over-oxidation that occurs in other solvents. The application of DMSO to protect the substrate against singlet oxygen represents a novel approach that is potentially applicable in other aerobic photocatalytic processes.

Abstract:A new transition-metal-free, sodium metaperiodate (NaIO4)-mediated direct oxidation of methylarenes and benzylic bromides to the corresponding aromatic carboxylic acids is described. Under the same reaction conditions, benzylic alcohols are selectively oxidized to afford the corresponding aldehydes in good yields without undergoing overoxidation. Unprecedentedly, oxidation of benzyl bromide, toluene, or benzyl alcohol with NaIO4 underwent nuclear bromination followed by oxidation to give 4-bromobenzoic acid in 60-79% yields.

Abstract:The formation of aldehydes and ketones via selective oxidation of alcohols is an essential transformation in organic synthesis. However, the usually harsh reaction conditions using toxic metal catalysts or corrosive reagents lead to undesired side products and wastes. Environmentally friendly and mild reaction conditions using metal-free catalysts remain a huge challenge. Herein, we report the use of a thiophene-based covalent triazine framework (CTF) as pure organic and visible-light-active photocatalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols at room temperature. Molecular oxygen was activated as a clean and selective oxidant. The high selectivity and efficiency of the pure organic photocatalyst could be demonstrated and were comparable to those of the state-of-art metal or nonmetal catalytic systems reported.

Abstract:Bifunctional catalysts have been considered to have vital importance in catalytic chemical process, but there is still some developing room for convenient materials with dual active sites. These catalysts have a notorious reputation for inhibiting mutual neutralization and controlling the distribution of active sites in order to perform their functions. We tailor a series of W-Zn-Al2O3 catalysts by modulating the doping density of metal species, which can boost the catalytic process of alcohols into corresponding carbonyl compounds in an additive-free-condition. Test results indicate that the proper content of zinc element can promote the overall activities, and subsequent adjustment of doping zinc can dramatically increase the electronic interaction and change the distribution of chemical active sites. Also, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed to better understand the acid-base bifunctional catalytic process. Theoretical results confirm this system can provide certain references for similar reactants. Present reaction system is a green procedure and features a broad substrate scope, which reveals a sustainable method to process oxidative dehydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:An iridium-catalyzed, highly efficient, and site-selective deoxygenation of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols has been realized, under the assistance of a 4-(N-substituted amino)aryl directing group. Only the hydroxyl adjacent to the directing group can be deoxygenated. The deoxygenation is performed in water, with formic acid as both the promoter and hydride donor. Excellent yields and functionality tolerance, as well as high efficiency (S/C up to 1 000 000, TOF up to 445 000 h–1), are obtained. The kinetic isotope effect studies show that hydride formation is the rate-determining step, and the deoxygenation follows an SN1-type pathway. The deoxygenation protocol has been demonstrated useful in the structural modification of naturally occurring ketones and steroids.

Abstract:Hydroxyl is widely found in organic molecules as functional group and its deprivation plays an inevitable role in organic synthesis. However, the direct cleavage of Csp3-O bond in alcohols with high selectivity and efficiency, especially without the assistance of metal catalyst, has been a formidable challenge because of its strong bond dissociation energy and unfavorable thermodynamics. Herein, an efficient metal-free strategy that enables direct deoxygenation of alcohols has been developed for the first time, with hydrazine as the reductant induced by light. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, excellent functional group tolerance, and abundant and easily available starting materials, rendering selective deoxygenation of a variety of 1° and 2° alcohols, vicinal diols, and β-1 and even β-O-4 models of natural wood lignin. This strategy is also highlighted by its "traceless" and non-toxic by-products N2 and H2, as readily escapable gases. Mechanistic studies demonstrated dimethyl sulfide being a key intermediate in this transformation.
