Abstract:As a new research area of information security, DNA cryptography has achieved rapid advancements over recent years. It has been demonstrated that data hiding and encryption can be realized based on DNA digital encoding and microdots steganographic techniques. Here we present a more secure encryption scheme utilizing DNA microdots. It is noteworthy that the scheme achieves double concealing, which combines the properties of traditional cryptography and DNA microdots. The security of the scheme is analyzed from several aspects as well. Finally, the simulation proved a strong confidentiality of the encryption scheme.

Abstract:DNA cryptography is a new born cryptographic field emerged with the research of DNA computing, in which DNA is used as information carrier and the modern biological technology is used as implementation tool. The vast parallelism and extraordinary information density inherent in DNA molecules are explored for cryptographic purposes such as encryption, authentication, signature, and so on. In this paper, we briefly introduce the biological background of DNA cryptography and the principle of DNA computing, summarize the progress of DNA cryptographic research and several key problems, discuss the trend of DNA cryptography, and compare the status, security and application fields of DNA cryptography with those of traditional cryptography and quantum cryptography. It is pointed out that all the three kinds of cryptography have their own advantages and disadvantages and complement each other in future practical application. The current main difficulties of DNA cryptography are the absence of effective secure theory and simple realizable method. The main goal of the research of DNA cryptography is exploring characteristics of DNA molecule and reaction, establishing corresponding theories, discovering possible development directions, searching for simple methods of realizing DNA cryptography, and laying the basis for future development.

Abstract:A scheme utilizing DNA technology for the purposes of DNA cryptography has been developed. To enhance the security of DNA cryptosystem, we used DNA digital encoding, complementary rules and biotechnological methods in this scheme. The experimental result showed that the scheme is feasible and the security analysis indicated that the scheme has a strong confidentiality.

Abstract:DNA cryptography is a new field which has emerged with progress in the research of DNA computing. In our study, a symmetric-key cryptosystem was designed by applying a modern DNA biotechnology, microarray, into cryptographic technologies. This is referred to as DNA symmetric-key cryptosystem (DNASC). In DNASC, both encryption and decryption keys are formed by DNA probes, while its cipher-text is embedded in a specially designed DNA chip (microarray). The security of this system is mainly rooted in difficult biology processes and problems, rather than conventional computing technology, thus it is unaffected by changes from the attack of the coming quantum computer. The encryption process is a fabrication of a specially designed DNA chip and the decryption process is the DNA hybridization. In DNASC, billions of DNA probes are hybridized and identified at the same time, thus the decryption process is conducted in a massive, parallel way. The great potential in vast parallelism computation and the extraordinary information density of DNA are displayed in DNASC to some degree.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive survey of different techniques for Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) -based cryptography and steganography. DNA-based cryptography is an emerging field that utilizes DNA molecules' massive parallelism and vast storage capacity to encode and decode information. The field has gained significant attention in recent years due to its potential advantages over traditional cryptographic methods, such as high storage capacity, low error rate, and resistance to environmental factors. In this paper, we review three types of DNA-based cryptography: natural DNA cryptography, pseudo-DNA cryptography, and DNA-based steganography. For each technique, we discuss its advantages and limitations, as well as future directions for research. Our goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the applications and limitations of using DNA for cryptographic purposes. We believe that our analysis will be useful for researchers working on developing new techniques for secure data transmission using DNA molecules.

Abstract:The application of DNA in information science brings new challenges and opportunities to modern cryptography. On one hand, the vast parallelism inherent in DNA computation brings new challenges to modern cryptography, which is based on hard mathematic problems. On the other hand, one can use DNA to realize new cryptographic technologies-DNA cryptography. In this paper, DNA computation is introduced firstly. Under the current model in DNA computation, we think that DNA computation brings no real threat to modern cryptography. Then, we introduce DNA cryptography and discuss the relationship between DNA cryptography and modern cryptography. It is believed that the newborn DNA computation and DNA cryptography have great potential, and will have great effect on the future of computation technology and information security.

Abstract:Cryptography is the science that secures data and communication over the network by applying mathematics and logic to design strong encryption methods. In the modern era of e-business and e-commerce the protection of confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA triad) of stored information as well as of transmitted data is very crucial. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a genetic molecule consisting of two linked strands that wind around each other to form a double helical structure. The backbone of each strand is made of alternating deoxyribose sugar and phosphate groups. To each sugar one of four bases are attached i.e., adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). DNA molecules, having the capacity to store, process and transmit information, inspires the idea of DNA cryptography. It is the rapid emerging unconventional techniques which combines the chemical characteristics of biological DNA sequences with classical cryptography to ensure non-vulnerable transmission of data. This innovative method is based on the notion of DNA computing. The methodologies of DNA cryptography are not coded mathematically; thus, it could be too secure to be cracked easily.

Abstract:Modern cryptography based on computational complexity theory is mainly constructed with silicon-based circuits. As DNA nanotechnology penetrates the molecular domain, utilizing molecular cryptography for data access protection in the biomolecular domain becomes a unique approach to information security. However, building security devices and strategies with robust security and compatibility is still challenging. Here, this study reports a time-controlled molecular authentication strategy using DNAzyme and DNA strand displacement as the basic framework. A time limit exists for authorization and access, and this spontaneous shutdown design further protects secure access. Multiple hierarchical authentications, temporal Boolean logic authentication, and enzyme authentication strategies are constructed based on DNA networks'good compatibility and programmability. This study gives proof of concept for the detection and protection of bioinformation about single nucleotide variants and miRNA, highlighting their potential in biosensing and security protection.

Abstract:A novel image encryption algorithm using the chaotic system and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) computing is presented. Different from the traditional encryption methods, the permutation and diffusion of our method are manipulated on the 3D DNA matrix. Firstly, a 3D DNA matrix is obtained through bit plane splitting, bit plane recombination, DNA encoding of the plain image. Secondly, 3D DNA level permutation based on position sequence group (3DDNALPBPSG) is introduced, and chaotic sequences generated from the chaotic system are employed to permutate the positions of the elements of the 3D DNA matrix. Thirdly, 3D DNA level diffusion (3DDNALD) is given, the confused 3D DNA matrix is split into sub-blocks, and XOR operation by block is manipulated to the sub-DNA matrix and the key DNA matrix from the chaotic system. At last, by decoding the diffused DNA matrix, we get the cipher image. SHA 256 hash of the plain image is employed to calculate the initial values of the chaotic system to avoid chosen plaintext attack. Experimental results and security analyses show that our scheme is secure against several known attacks, and it can effectively protect the security of the images.

Abstract:Over the last four decades, research on DNA as a functional material has primarily focused on its predictable conformation and programmable interaction. However, its low energy consumption, high responsiveness and sensitivity also make it ideal for designing specific signaling pathways, and enabling the development of molecular computers. This review mainly discusses recent advancements in the utilization of DNA nanotechnology for molecular computer, encompassing applications in storage, cryptography and logic circuits. It elucidates the challenges encountered in the application process and presents solutions exemplified by representative works. Lastly, it delineates the challenges and opportunities within this filed.

Abstract:This paper proposes DNA-PKC, an asymmetric encryption and signature cryptosystem by combining the technologies of genetic engineering and cryptology. It is an exploratory research of biological cryptology. Similar to conventional public-key cryptology, DNA-PKC uses two pairs of keys for encryption and signature, respectively. Using the public encryption key, everyone can send encrypted message to a specified user, only the owner of the private decryption key can decrypt the ciphertext and recover the message; in the signature scheme, the owner of the private signing key can generate a signature that can be verified by other users with the public verification key, but no else can forge the signature. DNA-PKC differs from the conventional cryptology in that the keys and the ciphertexts are all biological molecules. The security of DNA-PKC relies on difficult biological problems instead of computational problems; thus DNA-PKC is immune from known attacks, especially the quantum computing based attacks.

Abstract:With the progress of DNA computing, DNAbased cryptography becomes an emerging interdisciplinary research field. In this paper, we present a novel DNA cryptography that takes advantage of DNA self-assembled structure. Making use of the toehold strands recognition and strand displacement, the bit-wise exclusive-or(XOR)operation is carried out to fulfill the information encryption and decryption in the form of a one-time-pad. The security of this system mainly comes from the physical isolation and specificity of DNA molecules. The system is constructed by using complex DNA self-assembly, in which technique of fluorescent detection is utilized to implement the signal processing. In the proposed DNA cryptography,the XOR operation at each bit is carried out individually,thus the encryption and decryption process could be conducted in a massive, parallel way. This work may demonstrate that DNA cryptography has the great potential applications in the field of information security.

Abstract:Abstract Biomolecular cryptography exploiting specific biomolecular interactions for data encryption represents a unique approach for information security. However, constructing protocols based on biomolecular reactions to guarantee confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) of information remains a challenge. Here we develop DNA origami cryptography (DOC) that exploits folding of a M13 viral scaffold into nanometer-scale self-assembled braille-like patterns for secure communication, which can create a key with a size of over 700 bits. The intrinsic nanoscale addressability of DNA origami additionally allows for protein binding-based steganography, which further protects message confidentiality in DOC. The integrity of a transmitted message can be ensured by establishing specific linkages between several DNA origamis carrying parts of the message. The versatility of DOC is further demonstrated by transmitting various data formats including text, musical notes and images, supporting its great potential for meeting the rapidly increasing CIA demands of next-generation cryptography.

Abstract:The exponential growth of the total amount of global data presents a huge challenge to mainstream storage media. The emergence of molecular digital storage inspires the development of the new-generation higher-density digital data storage. In particular, DNA with high storage density, reproducibility, and long recoverable lifetime behaves the ideal representative of molecular digital storage media. With the development of DNA synthesis and sequencing technologies and the reduction of cost, DNA digital storage has attracted more and more attention and achieved significant breakthroughs. Herein, this Review briefly describes the workflow of DNA storage, and highlights the storage step of DNA digital data storage. Then, according to different information storage forms, the current DNA information encryption methods are emphatically expounded. Finally, the brief perspectives on the current challenges and optimizing proposals in DNA information preservation and encryption are presented.

Abstract:The DNA cryptography is a new and very promising direction in cryptography research. DNA can be used in cryptography for storing and transmitting the information, as well as for computation. Although in its primitive stage, DNA cryptography is shown to be very effective. Currently, several DNA computing algorithms are proposed for quite some cryptography, cryptanalysis and steganography problems, and they are very powerful in these areas. However, the use of the DNA as a means of cryptography has high tech lab requirements and computational limitations, as well as the labor intensive extrapolation means so far. These make the efficient use of DNA cryptography difficult in the security world now. Therefore, more theoretical analysis should be performed before its real applications. In this project, We do not intended to utilize real DNA to perform the cryptography process; rather, We will introduce a new cryptography method based on central dogma of molecular biology. Since this method simulates some critical processes in central dogma, it is a pseudo DNA cryptography method. The theoretical analysis and experiments show this method to be efficient in computation, storage and transmission; and it is very powerful against certain attacks. Thus, this method can be of many uses in cryptography, such as an enhancement insecurity and speed to the other cryptography methods. There are also extensions and variations to this method, which have enhanced security, effectiveness and applicability.

Abstract:A subtraction‐based DNA origami cryptography strategy that uses structural defects as active sites to convey encrypted information is reported. Custom defects are made using custom "hook" strands that can fish out designated staple strands from the staple pool. Conventional cryptographic methods rely on increased computational complexity to counteract the threat posed by growing computing power for sustainable protection. DNA cryptography circumvents this threat by leveraging complex DNA recognition to maintain information security. Specifically, DNA origami has been repurposed for cryptography, using programmable folding of the long scaffold strand carrying additional tagged strands for information encryption. Herein, a subtraction‐based cryptographic strategy is presented that uses structural defects on DNA origami to contain encrypted information. Designated staple strands are removed from the staple pool with "hook" strands to create active defect sites on DNA origami for information encryption. These defects can be filled by incubating the structures with the intact pool of biotinylated staple strands, resulting in biotin patterns that can be used for protein‐binding steganography. The yields of individual protein pixels reached over 91%, and self‐correction codes are implemented to aid the information recovery. Furthermore, the encrypted organization of defective DNA origami structures is investigated to explore the potential of this method for scalable information storage. This method uses DNA origami to encrypt information in hidden structural features, utilizing subtraction for robust cryptography while ensuring the safety and recovery of data.

Abstract:In the paper, a novel image encryption algorithm based on DNA sequence operations and chaotic systems is proposed. The encryption architecture of permutation and diffusion is adopted. Firstly, 256-bit hash value of the plain image is gotten to calculate the initial values and system parameters of the 2D Logistic-adjusted-Sine map (2D-LASM) and a new 1D chaotic system; thus, the encryption scheme highly depends on the original image. Next, the chaotic sequences from 2D-LASM are used to produce the DNA encoding/decoding rule matrix, and the plain image is encoded into a DNA matrix according to it. Thirdly, DNA level row permutation and column permutation are performed on the DNA matrix of the original image, inter-DNA-plane permutation and intra-DNA-plane permutation can be attained simultaneously, and then, DNA XOR operation is performed on the permutated DNA matrix using a DNA key matrix, and the key matrix is produced by the combination of two 1D chaotic systems. Finally, after decoding the confused DNA matrix, the cipher image is obtained. Experimental results and security analyses demonstrate that the proposed scheme not only has good encryption effect, but also is secure enough to resist against the known attacks.

Abstract:In recent years, encryption algorithms have undergone rapid development, finding extensive applications across diverse industries. In the pursuit of enhancing the security of image encryption methodologies, this paper introduces a novel computational holographic encryption approach grounded in DNA coding and bit-plane decomposition. The encryption framework employs a Logistic-Sine chaotic mapping system characterized by a substantial key space to control encryption particulars. The plaintext image undergoes encryption through the input–output algorithm of computational holography. This algorithm shifts information from the spatial domain, represented by the greyscale map, to the frequency domain, concealing the distribution of pixel values. The incorporation of DNA coding and bit-plane transformations serves to intensify the chaos within the ciphertext image, thereby maximizing the efficacy of the encryption process. By integrating principles from biology and physical optics into encryption methodologies, this approach amalgamates diverse scientific domains. Simulation results and data analyses substantiate that the proposed encryption algorithm adeptly withstands various attacks, attesting to its security and reliability.

Abstract:Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) provides a collection of intelligent tools for the development of information cryptography and biosensors. However, most conventional DNA regulation strategies rely solely on enthalpy regulation, which suffers from unpredictable stimuli-responsive performance and unsatisfactory accuracy due to relatively large energy fluctuations. Here, we report an enthalpy and entropy synergistic regulation–based pH-responsive A + /C DNA motif for programmable biosensing and information encryption. In the DNA motif, the variation in loop length alters entropic contribution, and the number of A + /C bases regulates enthalpy, which is verified through thermodynamic characterizations and analyses. On the basis of this straightforward strategy, the performances, such as p K a , of the DNA motif can be precisely and predictably tuned. The DNA motifs are finally successfully applied for glucose biosensing and crypto-steganography systems, highlighting their potential in the field of biosensing and information encryption.

Abstract:Recent advancements in synthesis and sequencing techniques have made deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) a promising alternative for next-generation digital storage. As it approaches practical application, ensuring the security of DNA-stored information has become a critical problem. Deniable encryption allows the decryption of different information from the same ciphertext, ensuring that the "plausible" fake information can be provided when users are coerced to reveal the real information. In this paper, we propose a deniable encryption method that uniquely leverages DNA noise channels. Specifically, true and fake messages are encrypted by two similar modulation carriers and subsequently obfuscated by inherent errors. Experiment results demonstrate that our method not only can conceal true information among fake ones indistinguishably, but also allow both the coercive adversary and the legitimate receiver to decrypt the intended information accurately. Further security analysis validates the resistance of our method against various typical attacks. Compared with conventional DNA cryptography methods based on complex biological operations, our method offers superior practicality and reliability, positioning it as an ideal solution for data encryption in future large-scale DNA storage applications.
