Abstract:This paper considers ℋ2 or LQG controller reduction from all (suboptimal) stabilizing ℋ2 controller parametrization. It is shown that the closed-loop stability is guaranteed and performance degradation is limited if certain weighted controller reduction errors are small.

Abstract:The issue of designing reduced-order LQG controller is considered from the view of information theory.By exploring the description of the internal state information of the system,two approaches based on cross-Gramian matrix by the principle of minimum information loss are proposed to design LQG reduced-order controller.The performances of the reduced-order LQG closed-loop systems are compared with both the high-order LQG closed-loop and the low-order closed-loop system obtained by the minimum K-L information distance controller reduction method.As the numerical simulation shows the reduced-order closed-loop systems obtained by these two approaches have satisfied performances which prove the efficiency of the controller reduction methods.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method to solve the controller-reduction problem based on the L-1-norm. This method uses a reduced-order closed-loop system to deduce reduced-order controllers. Abstract:The problem of guaranteed cost control for a class of linear discrete uncertain system is considered in this paper. The system under consideration contains convex polyhedral uncertain parameters. An upper bound of performance measured by standard quadratic function is constructed and a method of designing state feedback robust stabilizing control law guaranteeing this quadratic performance index of system be less than this upper bound is derived. It is proved that whether such a control law exists is equivalent to the feasibility of a group of linear matrix inequality Also, a procedure is given to select an optimal state feedback controller in the sense of minimizing the upper bound of quadratic performance index.

Abstract:This note concerns the robust absolute stability analysis for a class of general neutral type Lurie indirect control systems with nonlinearity located in an infinite sector or finite one. By using Lyapunov functional of quadratic form with integral term and introducing some free-weighting matrices, some delay-dependent robust absolute stability criteria are presented in terms of strict linear matrix inequalities. Neither model transformation nor bounding technique is required here. The obtained criteria are less conservative than previous ones, which are illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract:The problem of controller reduction has a rich history in control theory. Yet, many questions remain open. In particular, there exist very few results on the order reduction of general non-observer based controllers and the subsequent quantification of the closed-loop performance. Recent developments in model-free policy optimization for Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control have highlighted the importance of this question. In this paper, we first propose a new set of sufficient conditions ensuring that a perturbed controller remains internally stabilizing. Based on this result, we illustrate how to perform order reduction of general non-observer based controllers using balanced truncation and modal truncation. We also provide explicit bounds on the LQG performance of the reduced-order controller. Furthermore, for single-input-single-output (SISO) systems, we introduce a new controller reduction technique by truncating unstable modes. We illustrate our theoretical results with numerical simulations. Our results will serve as valuable tools to design direct policy search algorithms for control problems with partial observations.

Abstract:The reduce-then-design approach is widely used for controller synthesis of infinite dimensional systems.A drawback of the reduce-then-design method is the inherent loss of information due to the truncation before control design.Moreover,the order of the model truncation is a trade-off between model accuracy and real time computation.The stabilization of an unstable linear parabolic partial differential equation(PDE) system with both Neumann boundary control and interior control is considered in this work.Point output measurement is available at one end of the physical domain.A proportional state feedback is proposed for the interior control with a symmetric kernel function,and the pseudospectral method is used to solve the stability conditions governed by the Sturm-Liouville systems.In addition,an observer is designed using the point measurement at one end of the physical domain,and used to propose an observer–based feedback controller for the PDE system.Both controller and observer gains are designed numerically to make the eigenvalues of the associated Sturm-Liouville problems stable.Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Abstract:This paper revisits the classical Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control from a modern optimization perspective. We analyze two aspects of the optimization landscape of the LQG problem: 1) connectivity of the set of stabilizing controllers $\mathcal{C}_n$; and 2) structure of stationary points. It is known that similarity transformations do not change the input-output behavior of a dynamical controller or LQG cost. This inherent symmetry by similarity transformations makes the landscape of LQG very rich. We show that 1) the set of stabilizing controllers $\mathcal{C}_n$ has at most two path-connected components and they are diffeomorphic under a mapping defined by a similarity transformation; 2) there might exist many \emph{strictly suboptimal stationary points} of the LQG cost function over $\mathcal{C}_n$ and these stationary points are always \emph{non-minimal}; 3) all \emph{minimal} stationary points are globally optimal and they are identical up to a similarity transformation. These results shed some light on the performance analysis of direct policy gradient methods for solving the LQG problem.

Abstract:This paper considers controller order reduction with the consideration of closed loop stability and performance. A closed loop structurally balancing method is proposed to reduce the controller orders for a class of systems and controllers. The resulting reduced order controllers, if they exist, are guaranteed to stabilize the corresponding systems. Error bounds are also derived for the closed loop performance degradation.

Abstract:In this paper, a special structure is first proposed for stable and reduced-order controllers. Then, two controller design methods are presented, where one is based on a special construction on the new introduced slack matrix variables, the other is based on the separation of Lyapunov matrix and control matrix from the two stage algorithms. The new methods can deal with the simultaneous stabilization problems for several plants with different orders and different numbers of unstable poles which can not be solved by general robust control methods. The new methods are also generalized to solve H∞, strict positive real (SPR) and decentralized control problems. Finally, norm constraint problems of controllers are discussed, even an absolute value constraint can be added to each controller parameter in the proposed methods. Related NP hard problems have been discussed in this paper, and related controller design algorithms are proposed. Two new methods are compared with each other in several examples, and the effectiveness of the new methods are illustrated.

Abstract:This paper revisits the problem of robust stability analysis and synthesis for linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. By introducing two new slack variables, new conditions for the polyquadratic stability and for the affine quadratic stability of LPV systems are presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities. These results are then applied for robust controller synthesis. Owing to the extra freedom degree introduced by the real slack variable, this proposed approach could lead to less conservative results than that of from the literature, especially for robust controller synthesis. The effectiveness and superiority are demonstrated by the comparison between this proposed approach and the existing results on a well-known numerical example. Suboptimality analysis of receding horizon quadratic control with unknown linear systems and its applications in learning-based control

Abstract:In this work, we aim to analyze how the trade-off between the modeling error, the terminal value function error, and the prediction horizon affects the performance of a nominal receding-horizon linear quadratic (LQ) controller. By developing a novel perturbation result of the Riccati difference equation, a novel performance upper bound is obtained and suggests that for many cases, the prediction horizon can be either one or infinity to improve the control performance, depending on the relative difference between the modeling error and the terminal value function error. The result also shows that when an infinite horizon is desired, a finite prediction horizon that is larger than the controllability index can be sufficient for achieving a near-optimal performance, revealing a close relation between the prediction horizon and controllability. The obtained suboptimality performance bound is also applied to provide novel sample complexity and regret guarantees for nominal receding-horizon LQ controllers in a learning-based setting.

Abstract:This paper considers reduced-order controller design for the general H ∞ control problem. Based on linear matrix inequality (LMI), two new upper bounds of order reduction are proposed in continuous- and discrete-time contexts respectively. The bounds have a clear geometric interpretation and are only determined by the generalized plant parameter matrices. Moreover, the existence conditions of the reduced-order controller have the same forms as the well-known three LMIs, but with fewer dimension matrix variables. In comparison with the previous results, one of the main advantages is that our approach is applicable to general H ∞ control. Furthermore, the existing results do not imply our results for singular H ∞ control. An illustrative example is given to show the efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim at developing computationally tractable methods for nonlinear model/controller reduction. Recently, model reduction by generalized differential (GD) balancing has been proposed for nonlinear systems with constant input-vector fields and linear output functions. First, we study incremental properties in the GD balancing framework. Next, based on these analyses, we provide GD LQG balancing and GD $H_\infty$-balancing as controller reduction methods for nonlinear systems by focusing on linear feedback and observer gains. Especially for GD $H_\infty$-balancing, we clarify when the closed-loop system consisting of the full-order system and a reduced-order controller is exponentially stable. All provided methods for controller reduction can be relaxed to linear matrix inequalities.

Abstract:In this paper, a revisit of the classical LQG control is performed with a new design paradigm which is motivated by the well-known Youla-Ku.cera parameterization of all stabilizing controllers. In particular, it is shown that this new paradigm renders the exactly same LQG control performance if there is no modeling mismatch for the plant, but provides automatic robust recovery of the LQG performance when the modeling error is present. It is also noted that the recovery is driven by the 'error size' of the modeling mismatch, resulting in much less conservativeness of the control performance compared with the traditional mixed H-2/H-infinity design which is conducted through trade-off. A simulation example is provided to validate the design of the new paradigm.
