Abstract:Abstract We explored the potential of an optoelectronic frequency hopping system within the 300 GHz band, leveraging a tunable distributed feedback (DFB) laser array and uni-traveling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD). Our experiments successfully achieved a 10-channel terahertz (THz) frequency hopping, marking a significant advancement in THz secure communication technologies. Notably, the system exhibited a rapid frequency-hopping capability with a short transition time of 0.8 ms between channels, ranging from 288 GHz to 331 GHz. Further, we conducted data transmission tests at a rate of 5 Gbit/s across several channels. The results were promising, showing each channel maintained a clear eye pattern and a low bit error rate, crucial factors for reliable and secure data transmission. These findings not only demonstrate the efficacy of our system but also open new avenues for high-speed, secure THz communication.

Abstract:Advanced multi-level modulation formats have shown their great potential in high-speed and high-spectral-efficiency optical communications. Using quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation format for free-space optical (FSO) communication, a bidirectional high-speed FSO transmission link with the bit rates of up to 40 Gbit/s over ∼1 km, between two buildings in the campus of Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun, China, is experimentally demonstrated cooperating by capture and tracking systems. The eye-diagrams and constellation diagrams of the transmitted QPSK signals are clearly observed. By comparing the bit error rate (BER) curves before and after transmission, one can find that the receiving powers are both less than −16.5 dBm for the forward and backward transmissions of the bidirectional 20, 30, and 40 Gbit/s FSO links, and their power penalties due to the phase fluctuation of the atmospheric channel are both less than 2.6 dB, at the BER of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:This paper proposes a Frequency Hopping (FH) communication system with a novel frequency synthesis method. Considering that the existing frequency synthesis methods are inevitably limited by the electronic device bandwidth, a combination of directly modulated laser (DML) and optical heterodyne technique is proposed as a hopping frequency source. The principle of the method is presented and a dual frequency hopping system in E band is carried out through simulation to verified the feasibility of the proposed method. This frequency synthesis method supports high radio frequency, ultra-wideband and high hopping speed.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate several different approaches for the realization of over 100Gb/s fiber-wireless integration system, including optical PDM combined with MIMO reception, advanced multi-level modulation, optical multi-carrier modulation, electrical multi-carrier modulation, antenna polarization multiplexing and multi-band multiplexing. These approaches can effectively reduce the signal baud rate as well as the required bandwidth for optical and electrical devices. We also experimentally investigate the problems, such as multi-path effect due to different wireless transmission distance, existing in the large capacity fiber-wireless integration system. We experimentally demonstrate these problems can be effectively solved by advanced DSP algorithms including classic CMA.

Abstract:Single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization (SCFDE) is promising for a 100-Gb/s or even higher optical fiber transmission system by combining the advantages of lower peak-to-average power ratio and less computation complexity. In this letter, we present the first polarization-division-multiplexed coherent optical SCFDE transmission experiment. By utilizing three optical carriers, we demonstrate a 120-Gb/s coherent optical system over 317-km standard single-mode fiber without inline chromatic dispersion compensation.

Abstract:An experimental demonstration of the ultra-large-capacity terahertz (THz)-wave signal transmission over a 20-km wired and 54-m wireless distance in an 80-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system is successfully realized for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Based on optical asymmetric single-sideband (ASSB) modulation and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, we achieve a record line rate of 6.4 Tbit/s (net rate of 5.12 Tbit/s) in a THz-over-fiber communication system. This experimental demonstration can provide an effective solution for ultra-large-capacity THz-over-fiber communication in future 6G networks.

Abstract:Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a promising solution for short-reach links. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate transmission of 128-Gb/s discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in an IM/DD optical system. Vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation with 20-dB suppression ratio enabled by a cost-effective interleave or a tunable optical filter (TOF) is employed to eliminate chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading. Meanwhile, a combination of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, such as pre-equalization, nonlinearity equalization (NE), and decision-directed least mean square (DDLMS), are utilized to mitigate the system distortions and improve system performance. By using this scheme, the 32-GBd DFT-spread OFDM signals can be successfully transmitted over 320-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with the measured bit error ratio (BER) under the soft-decision forward-error- correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2). We also achieved 144-Gb/s for 80-km SSMF transmission. Additionally, 4 x 128-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) DFT-S OFDM signals transmission over 320-km SSMF is experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this work reports the longest transmission distance for beyond 100-Gb/s IM/DD system.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 4-Gb/s radio-over-fiber (RoF) system with 40-km fiber and 2-m wireless distance downstream at 100-GHz carrier. To the best of our knowledge, this is for the first time in China to realize optical wireless link at 100 GHz. In this letter, simple intensity modulator with direct detector (IM-DD) modulation is employed and optical power penalty after 40-km single mode fiber (SMF)-28 and 2-m air link is 3.2 dB with bit-error-rate (BER) at 1×10-9.

Abstract:Due to the burgeoning demand for data transmission rates and capacities, forthcoming wireless communication networks are required to accommodate data rates reaching tens or even hundreds of Gbps per link. Photonics-aided terahertz (THz) wireless systems, supporting ultra-high-speed and long-distance transmission, stand as highly advantageous candidates for future broadband and large-capacity wireless transmission networks. Building upon this background, our paper systematically summarizes and demonstrates a long-distance wireless communication system in the sub-THz band (125 - 145 GHz) based on photonics-aided technology. Our experiments achieve a maximum signal transmission rate of 200 Gbps in the 125-GHz band with a wireless transmission range of 4,600 m. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrate photonics-aided single-channel and dual-polarization 2×2 MIMO 4600-m wireless transmission within the sub-THz band. In our demonstration of single-channel 4600-m wireless transmission, the maximum transmission rate achieved is 60 Gbps for the 135-GHz QPSK signal and 40 Gbps for the 145-GHz QPSK signal. It is noteworthy that the bit error rate (BER) remains below the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2.4×10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-2</sup> with a 20% overhead. Further extending our demonstration to 2×2 MIMO 4600-m wireless transmission, we achieve transmission rates of 120 Gbps for PDM-QPSK signals and 200 Gbps for PDM-16QAM at 128.75 GHz and 125 GHz respectively. The BER is maintained below the 20% SD-FEC threshold of 2.4×10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-2</sup> . This achievement sets a record-breaking wireless transmission range of up to 920 Gbps.km (200 Gbps × 4600 m) at 125 GHz.
