Abstract:Resonant degenerate four-wave mixing in a number of infrared-absorbing dyes was studied with 160-psec pulses at 1.064 μm. Hyperpolarizabilities in the range of 10−44 to 10−42 V−2 m5 were observed. A theoretical model based on a two-band system is developed that explains the results and permits the prediction of hyperpolarizabilities from the linear spectroscopic properties.

Abstract:Based on the attenuated-total-reflection technique, a new method has been proposed to determine the second hyperpolarizability gamma(-omega(4);omega(3),omega(2),omega(1)) Of the linear conjugated polymer in the off-resonant region by means of quadratic electro-optic effect. Off-resonant third-order optical nonlinearities of squarylium and croconium dyes

Abstract:The magnitude and dynamic response of the third-order optical nonlinearities of squarylium and croconium dyes in methanol solution were measured by femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique at 800 nm. Ultrafast nonlinear optical responses have been observed, and the magnitude of the second-order hyperpolarizabilities was evaluated to be 5.80 x 10(-31) esu for the squarylium dye and 8.69 x 10(-31) esu for the croconium dye, respectively. The large optical nonlinearities of the dyes can be attributed to their rigid and intramolecular charge transfer structure, and the instantaneous NLO responses of dyes are shorter than the experimental time resolution (50 fs), which is mainly contributed from the electron delocalization. The fast nonlinear response and large third-order optical nonlinearities show that the studied squarylium and croconium dyes might a kind of promising materials for the applications in all-optical switching and modulator.

Abstract:The first hyperpolarizabilities β zzz  of a hemicyanine chromophore dye and a new type chromophore, both containing rare earth complex anion, have been measured by Hyper Rayleigh scattering in solution. The results showed that the nonlinear optical properties of these compounds have been improved by introducing the rare earth complex anion.

Abstract:The ground-state geometry, second hyperpolarizabilities of the anthraquinone derivatives have been studied using finite field (FF) The molecular configurations and calculated γzzzz values are considerably affected by substituents. The third-order nonlinear optical property of 1,4-diamino-2,3-diphenoxy-anthraquinone has been measured using picosecond degenerate four-wave mixing. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) of the dye is as high as 1.16×10−12 esu. The second hyperpolarizability (γ) value is 5.71×10−31 esu.

Abstract:Near-infrared dyes - di- and tri-indocarbocyanine dyes and nickel dithiolenes - were synthesized and their third-order optical nonlinearities in solutions were investigated by using the degenerate four-wave mixing technique. Large third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities with gamma values of up to 10(-29) esu were observed. The gamma value of the indocarbocyanine dyes increases with increase of conjugation length of the polymethine chain. The central ring structure in the chromophore lowers the gamma value of the indocarbocyanine dyes. With change of the substituents on the benzene ring an increase in gamma value is observed for all the asymmetric nickel dithiolenes. The order of increase of nonlinear hyperpolarizability is as follows: H < Cl < CH3 < C2H5 < CH(CH3)(2). (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:By using the technique of the attenuated total reflection, the complex second hyperpolarizability for the quadratic electro-optic effect of a linear conjugated polymer is determined at the wavelength of the absorption edge by employing the data measured from different guided wave resonance dips. Abstract:Large nonresonant third-order hyperpolarizabilities, γ1111, for solutions of three organic charge-transfer complexes in tetrahydrofuran have been measured. The values obtained for nonresonant γ1111 are 5.8×10−32 esu for Perylene/tetracyanoethylene, 1.2×10−32 esu for Pyrene/tetracyanoethylene, and 7.2×10−33 esu for Naphthanthracene/tetracyanoethylene. The corresponding values of the third-order susceptibility χ(3)1111 for the solid state are estimated to be 1.0×10−9 esu, 2.3×10−10 esu, and 1.3×10−10 esu, respectively.

Abstract:A method has been proposed to determine the components of the second hyperpolarizability gamma(-omega(4); omega(3), omega(2), omega(1)) of a conjugated polymer in the off-resonant region based on the attenuated-total-reflection technique. By doing a least-square fit to the experimental data of gamma(-omega; 0, 0, omega) for the quadratic electro-optic effect, the frequency-independent term of the components of gamma(-omega(4); omega(3), omega(2), omega(1)) is obtained, from which the components of gamma(-omega(4); omega(3), omega(2), omega(1)) are determined. Abstract:E-2-Tricyanovinyl-3-n-hexyl-5-[4-{bis(4-n-butylphenyl)amino}-2-methoxystyryl]-thiophene, 1, has previously been used to demonstrate applications relying on frequency tripling of 1.55 μm light. Here we report the synthesis and chemical characterisation of 1, along with quantum-chemical calculations and additional experimental investigations of its third-order nonlinear properties that give more insight into its frequency tripling properties. Although 1 can be processed into amorphous films, crystals can also be grown by slow evaporation of solutions; the crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction shows evidence of significant contributions from zwitterionic resonance forms to the ground-state structure, and reveals centrosymmetric packing exhibiting π–π and C–H⋯NC interactions. Both solutions and films of 1 exhibit near-infrared two-photon absorption into the low-lying one-photon-allowed state with a peak two-photon cross-section of ca. 290 GM (measured using the white-light continuum method with a pump wavelength of 1800 nm) at a transition energy equivalent to degenerate two-photon absorption at ca. 1360 nm; two related chromophores are also found to show comparable near-IR two-photon cross-sections. Closed-aperture Z-scan measurements and quantum-chemical calculations indicate that the nonlinear refractive index and third-harmonic generation properties of 1 are strongly dependent on frequency in the telecommunications range, due the aforementioned two-photon resonance.

Abstract:The nonresonant third-order hyperpolarizability of all-carbon molecules C60 is measured by nanosecond degenerate four-wave-mixing experiment in C60 toluene solution. The value of gamma(1111) measured is 1.6 X 10(-31) esu, which corresponds to an estimated value of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility chi(1111E)(3) = 3.3 X 10(-9) esu for the solid compound.

Abstract:We investigate the third-order optical nonlinearities in four novel porphyrin dimers (dimers A to D) and a monomeric porphyrin H2CPTPP measured by using the single-beam z-scan technique with a pulsed Q-switched Nd:YAG nanosecond laser at 532nm. All the samples show strong excited state absorption (ESA) and high value of χ(3) in the ns domain at this wavelength. We perform a comparison between dimer A and its monomer H2CPTPP in their third-order optical nonlinearity, and discuss the relationships between the values of χ(3) and the different bridging groups for all the dimers.

Abstract:Two new azo-dye chromophores containing different electron-acceptor groups were synthesized and characterized by 1 H NMR, FT-IR and UV-vis spectra, respectively. The second-order nonlinearity of azo-dyes doped films in poly (methylmethacrylate) and the first hyperpolarizability of the azo molecules were investigated by the Maker Fringe method and the solvatochromic method, respectively. Experimental results showed that both of the two dyes exhibited large second-order nonlinearity (d33 > 30 pm/v) and the stronger electron-acceptor groups in dye molecules would induce larger second-order nonlinearity. This was confirmed by the measurement of the first hyperpolarizability.

Abstract:Third-order optical nonlinearities and dynamic responses of two imino squaramides under neutral and base conditions were studied using the femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing technique at 800 nm. Ultrafast optical responses have been observed and the magnitude of the second-order hyperpolarizabilities of the squaramides has been measured to be as large as 10−31 esu. The absorption spectra, color of solution, and third-order optical nonlinearities of two imino squaramides change with the addition of sodium hydroxide. The γ value under the base condition for each dye is approximately 1.25 times larger than that under neutral conditions.

Abstract:Third-order optical nonlinearities of two squarylium dyes with benzothiazole donor groups (BSQ1 and BSQ2) in chloroform solution are measured by a picosecond Z-scan technique at 532 nm. It is found that the two compounds show the saturation absorption and nonlinear self-focus refraction effect. The molecular second hyperpolarizabilities are calculated to be 7.46 × 10−31 esu and 5.01 × 10−30 esu for BSQ1 and BSQ2, respectively. The large optical nonlinearities of squarylium dyes can be attributed to their rigid and intramolecular charge transfer structure. The difference in γ values is attributed to the chloro group of benzene rings of BSQ2 and the one-photon resonance effect. It is found that the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of two squarylium dyes are mainly determined by the real parts of χ(3), and the large optical nonlinearities of studied squarylium dyes can be attributed to the nonlinear refraction.

Abstract:The real parts of third order optical nonlinearity of a series of azo dye (2 2 thiazolylazo 5 diethylaminophenol) and its copper and cobalt substituted complexes were measured by using femtosecond optical heterodyne optical Kerr gate technique at the wavelength of 647nm. All the values were found to be negative and great enhancement of nonlinearity was discovered in Cu and Co substituted complexes. By using a two level model, the enhancement is attributed to the two effects, i.e., the enhancement of one photon resonance of transition and the reduction of dipole difference between transition states. A negative γ eff as large as 10 -29 esu was found in Co complex.

Abstract:A series of hemicyanine dyes, including monomer ([(E)-N-methyl-4-(2-(4-N,N-dimethyl phenyl) ethenyl) pyridinium] iodide; M) and dimers (1,n-Bis [(E)- 4-(2-(4-N,N-dimethyl phenyl) ethenyl) pyridinyl]-alkane dibromide; n = 3, alkane = propane, B3: n = 5, alkane = pentane, 135; n = 12, alkane = dodecane, 1312), are synthesized and their ultrafast fluorescence up-conversion behaviors are studied. The fluorescence decay curves of these dyes can be well fitted by the sum of several exponential decays in the shorter wavelengths and by the sum of the exponential rise's) with decay(s) in the longer wavelengths. The fact that the values of longest lifetime component at longer wavelengths tend to be a constant proves the existence of a "sink" region on the potential energy surface of excited state. This sink region is around the TICT state, by which the nonradiative transition dominates the deactive decay paths of excited state. The time dependent Stokes shift function analysis of these four dye molecules in methanol indicates that the B5's unique "solvation" behavior is different from others. This difference is contributed by the increased difficulty of the TICT formation of 135 originated from its folded conformation. The time dependent Stokes shifts of M, B3, and B12 are due to not only solvation dynamics but also TICT formation. Detailed analysis is presented in the frame of a "two-state three-mode" model.

Abstract:We have measured the second-order hyperpolarizability gamma for C-70 and its poly-aminonitrile derivative by using the femtosecond optical Kerr effect at 810 nm. The result showed that C-70 exhibited a low optical nonlinearity. For the derivative C-70-poly-aminonitrile a magnitude as high as 1.6 x 10(-32) esu was measured for the second-order hyperpolarizability. The origin of this extreme enhancement of the nonlinearity of fullerene was assigned to the formation of a charge-transfer complex. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The linear and third-order nonlinear optical properties of four polymethine cyanines (PC-1–PC-4) were investigated by UV–visible absorption spectroscopy and degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique. The second-order hyperpolarizabilities γ of the four chromophores achieve 10−31esu. The dependence of their third-order optical nonlinearities on the molecular structure was discussed based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The calculated second-order hyperpolarizabilities γ well-reproduce the experimental trends. The results show that the third-order optical nonlinearities of the chromophores can be drastically enhanced by bulky heteroatom (such as selenium) with low electro-negativity, or extended π-conjugated terminal group.
