Networked Metropolis:A New Urban Spatial Development Model

Abstract:Driven by the technological revolution,globalization and organizational changes in the past decades,there have emerged new trends of spatial development of modern city-regions around the world,characterized by the multinucleation and networking of the space economy.We use the concept of "Networked Metropolis" to refer to these phenomena,and consider it as a new model for urban spatial development and planning nowadays.In this paper,we propose the development model of networked metropolis,which focuses on three aspects.In terms of spatial organization,the networked metropolis model emphasizes the decentralized-concentrated development of urban space and proposes the polycentric urban pattern as an efficient and sustainable spatial form for modern metropolitan areas.Besides,we consider urban networking as the key of the networked metropolis model,which means cities or urban centers are regarded as the main collective actors,and urban networks are developed among them to utilize synergetic effects by enforcing inter-urban or inter-center labor division and cooperation.We also suggest network governance should be pursued in the networked metropolis model to realize the balance of power among stakeholders,and to ensure increased efficiency and reduced agency problems for organizations.
