Abstract:Low efficiency of extracellular electron transfer (EET) is a major bottleneck in developing high-performance microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Herein, we construct Shewanella oneidensis MR-1@Au for the bioanode of MFCs. Through performance recovery experiments of mutants, we proved that abundant Au nanoparticles not only tightly covered the bacteria surface, but were also distributed in the periplasm and cytoplasm, and even embedded in the outer and inner membranes of the cell. These Au nanoparticles could act as electron conduits to enable highly efficient electron transfer between S. oneidensis MR-1 and electrodes. Strikingly, the maximum power density of the S. oneidensis MR-1@Au bioanode reached up to 3749 mW m(-2), which was 17.4 times higher than that with the native bacteria, reaching the highest performance yet reported in MFCs using Au or Au-based nanocomposites as the anode. This work elucidates the role of Au nanoparticles in promoting transmembrane and extracellular electron transfer from the perspective of molecular biology and electrochemistry, while alleviating bottlenecks in MFC performances.
Enhancing Extracellular Electron Transfer of Geobacter sulfurreducens in Bioelectrochemical Systems Using N-Doped Fe3O4@Carbon Dots

Abstract:A nanomaterial-living cell biohybrid system is an efficient energy conversion method due to enhanced interactions between inorganic materials and bacteria. However, inefficient electron transfer at the interface of the biohybrid remains as a limiting factor. Herein, an inorganic-biologic hybrid was proposed by combining a typical electroactive bacterium, Geobacter sulfurreducens, and a highly conductive N-doped Fe3O4 with a carbon dot shell (Fe3O4@CD) to boost energy conversion in bioelectrochemical systems (including microbial electrolytic cells and electro-methanogenesis). One-potsynthesized Fe3O4@CDs enhanced extracellular electron transfer in the biohybrid system by forming an interaction network with conductive proteins inside and outside G. sulfurreducens. In the microbial electrolytic cell, the maximum current of Fe3O4@CDs-fed cells was 6.37 times higher than that of the control group without nanoparticle addition. This enhanced performance was accompanied with higher bioactivity, higher cellular adhesion, and lower biofilm resistance. The G. sulfurreducens-Fe3O4@CDs biohybrids supplemented during electro-methanogenesis remained stable on anodes, which promoted microbial syntrophy. The metabolic methanogenesis pathways are strongly related to the electron transfer ability of G. sulfurreducens, which demonstrates a new strategy to promote extracellular electron transfer through the constructed biohybrid system.

Abstract:The microbial hybrid system modified by magnetic nanomaterials can enhance the interfacial electron transfer and energy conversion under the stimulation of a magnetic field. However, the bioelectrocatalytic performance of a hybrid system still needs to be improved, and the mechanism of magnetic field-induced bioelectrocatalytic enhancements is still unclear. In this work, γ-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles were coated on a Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 cell surface and followed by placing in an electromagnetic field. The results showed that the electromagnetic field can greatly boost the extracellular electron transfer, and the oxidation peak current of CN32@γ-Fe2O3 increased to 2.24 times under an electromagnetic field. The enhancement mechanism is mainly due to the fact that the surface modified microorganism provides an elevated contact area for the high microbial catalytic activity of the outer cell membrane's cytochrome, while the magnetic nanoparticles provide a networked interface between the cytoplasm and the outer membrane for boosting the fast multidimensional electron transport path in the magnetic field. This work sheds fresh scientific light on the rational design of magnetic-field-coupled electroactive microorganisms and the fundamentals of an optimal interfacial structure for a fast electron transfer process toward an efficient bioenergy conversion.

Abstract:Bioelectricity generation, by Shewanella oneidensis ( S. oneidensis ) MR-1, has become particularly alluring, thanks to its extraordinary prospects for energy production, pollution treatment, and biosynthesis. Attempts to improve its technological output by modification of S. oneidensis MR-1 remains complicated, expensive and inefficient. Herein, we report on the augmentation of S. oneidensis MR-1 with carbon dots (CDs). The CDs-fed cells show accelerated extracellular electron transfer and metabolic rate, with increased intracellular charge, higher adenosine triphosphate level, quicker substrate consumption and more abundant extracellular secretion. Meanwhile, the CDs promote cellular adhesion, electronegativity, and biofilm formation. In bioelectrical systems the CDs-fed cells increase the maximum current value, 7.34 fold, and power output, 6.46 fold. The enhancement efficacy is found to be strongly dependent on the surface charge of the CDs. This work demonstrates a simple, cost-effective and efficient route to improve bioelectricity generation of S. oneidensis MR-1, holding promise in all relevant technologies.

Abstract:A modular engineering strategy is adopted to construct a S. oneidensis‐carbon felt biohybrid electrocatalytic system, which included increased flavins biosynthesis and secretion, reconstruction of outer‐membrane c‐Cyts conductive channel, and bacterial cellulose‐based aerogel‐coated anthraquinone hybrid anode. This biohybrid system improved cell‐electrode interfacial electron transfer rate, which consequently boosted bioelectricity harvest, Cr6+ reduction, and CO2 reduction. Interfacial electron transfer between electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) and electrodes underlies a wide range of bio‐electrochemical systems with diverse applications. However, the electron transfer rate at the biotic‐electrode interface remains low due to high transmembrane and cell‐electrode interfacial electron transfer resistance. Herein, a modular engineering strategy is adopted to construct a Shewanella oneidensis‐carbon felt biohybrid electrode decorated with bacterial cellulose aerogel‐electropolymerized anthraquinone to boost cell‐electrode interfacial electron transfer. First, a heterologous riboflavin synthesis and secretion pathway is constructed to increase flavin‐mediated transmembrane electron transfer. Second, outer membrane c‐Cyts OmcF is screened and optimized via protein engineering strategy to accelerate contacted‐based transmembrane electron transfer. Third, a S. oneidensis‐carbon felt biohybrid electrode decorated with bacterial cellulose aerogel and electropolymerized anthraquinone is constructed to boost the interfacial electron transfer. As a result, the internal resistance decreased to 42 Ω, 480.8‐fold lower than that of the wild‐type (WT) S. oneidensis MR‐1. The maximum power density reached 4286.6 ± 202.1 mW m−2, 72.8‐fold higher than that of WT. Lastly, the engineered biohybrid electrode exhibited superior abilities for bioelectricity harvest, Cr6+ reduction, and CO2 reduction. This study showed that enhancing transmembrane and cell‐electrode interfacial electron transfer is a promising way to increase the extracellular electron transfer of EAMs.

Highly Boosted Microbial Extracellular Electron Transfer by Semiconductor Nanowire Array with Suitable Energy Level

Abstract:Microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET) with high performance and good controllability is always desired in various bioelectric applications. Depending on the redox state, C-type cytochromes located across the outer membranes (OMCs) mediate EET with different behaviors. Here, by incorporating Sn-doped In2O3 nanowire array with flat F-doped In2O3 (FTO), a composite electrode is developed that can highly boost EET by over 60 times at a certain potential of 0.2 V, where normally only limited EET current is observed on a conductive electrode. It is proposed that the underlay FTO with bias 0.2 V promotes EET via OMCs by physical contacting with microbes, while the semiconductor nanowires provide a suitable energy level to facilitate the EET via OMC-flavins cofactor, breaking the stereotype of the certain redox state of OMCs at a given potential. As a synergistic effect, EET via both OMCs and flavins is highly boosted simultaneously to achieve the dual-pathway EET, which could be further amplified by the nanostructured topology of the as-prepared electrode. Moreover, the EET current shows a positive correlation with the nanowire length, showing good controllability. This work provides an applicable method for constructing various highly efficient bioelectric devices.
A Novel and Utility Electrode with Boost Biofilm Formation and Current Generation in Microbial Fuel Cells Based on Chitosan/Carbon Composites

Abstract:The successful application of bioelectrochemical systems in the future depends on the improving of electrode performance while decreasing material costs. This study explores the use of chitosan supported on different kinds of carbon materials to modify graphite electrode for the electricity generation performance of Geobacter sulfurreducens. The novel hierarchically carbon composites modified electrodes were obtained by a simple and environment-friendly method. Among the proposed composites, the optimal composite CS/CB (5 h) possessed a better performance for the promotion of electrochemically active biofilm (EAB) growth and enhancing current generation compared with other composites. Based on morphological, chemical, and electrochemical evidences, we conclude that the CB was coated on the surface of CS to form the CS/CB decorated graphite electrode, and CS/CB (5 h) electrode exhibited significant load-bearing capacity for bacteria colonization and enhanced the contact between bacteria and electrode, which improved the direct electron transfer process. The microbial three-electrode system equipped CS/CB (5 h) device delivered a high current density of 1457 +/- 69 mu A/cm2. The current density was increased to 3 times higher than that of the unmodified electrode. The use of this CS/CB (5 h) composite can substantially improves EAB growth and enhance power production of bioelectrochemical systems. image

Abstract:Modifying the electrodes of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with iron oxides can improve the bacterial attachment performances and electrocatalytic activities for energy conversion, which is of significance in the fabrication of MFCs. However, the conventional modification methods usually result in the aggregation of iron sites, producing the electrodes of poor qualities. Herein, we report a novel method for the modification of electrochemical electrodes to boost the anode performance of MFC. The Shewanella precursor adhered on carbon felt electrode was directly carbonized to form a bacteria-derived biological iron oxide/carbon (Bio-FeOx/C) nanocomposite catalyst. The large spatial separation between the bacteria, as well as those between the iron containing proteins in the bacteria, deliver a highly dispersed Bio-FeOx/C nanocomposite with good electrocatalytic activities. The excellent microbial attachment performance and electron transfer rate of the Bio-FeOx/C modified electrode significantly promote the transfer of produced electrons between bacteria and electrode. Accordingly, the MFC with the Bio-FeOx/C electrode exhibits the maximum power density of 797.0 mW m-2, much higher than that obtained with the conventional carbon felt anode (226.1 mW m-2). Our works have paved a new avenue to the conversion of the natural bacterial precursors into active iron oxide nanoparticles as the anode catalyst of MFCs. The high catalytic activity of the prepared Bio-FeOx endows it great application potentials in the construction of high-performance electrodes.

Abstract:The iron transport system plays a crucial role in the extracellular electron transfer process of Shewanella sp . In this study, we fabricated a vertically oriented α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoarray on carbon cloth to enhance interfacial electron transfer in Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 microbial fuel cells. The incorporation of the α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoarray not only resulted in a slight increase in flavin content but also significantly enhanced biofilm loading, leading to an eight-fold higher maximum power density compared to plain carbon cloth. Through expression level analyses of electron transfer-related genes in the outer membrane and core genes in the iron transport system, we propose that the α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoarray can serve as an electron mediator, facilitating direct electron transfer between the bacteria and electrodes. This finding provides important insights into the potential application of iron-containing oxide electrodes in the design of microbial fuel cells and other bioelectrochemical systems, highlighting the role of α-Fe 2 O 3 in promoting direct electron transfer.

Enhancing electrical outputs of the fuel cells with Geobacter sulferreducens by overexpressing nanowire proteins

Abstract:Geobacter sulfurreducens strains with overexpressed nanowire proteins were constructed and used as electricigens in microbial fuel cells. Enhanced electrical outputs based on promoting biofilm formation on anode demonstrated that nanowire proteins are promising genetic tools to improve electrochemical performance of microbes for bioelectricity production. Protein nanowires are critical electroactive components for electron transfer of Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilm. To determine the applicability of the nanowire proteins in improving bioelectricity production, their genes including pilA, omcZ, omcS and omcT were overexpressed in G. sulfurreducens. The voltage outputs of the constructed strains were higher than that of the control strain with the empty vector (0.470–0.578 vs. 0.355 V) in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). As a result, the power density of the constructed strains (i.e. 1.39–1.58 W m−2) also increased by 2.62‐ to 2.97‐fold as compared to that of the control strain. Overexpression of nanowire proteins also improved biofilm formation on electrodes with increased protein amount and thickness of biofilms. The normalized power outputs of the constructed strains were 0.18–0.20 W g−1 that increased by 74% to 93% from that of the control strain. Bioelectrochemical analyses further revealed that the biofilms and MFCs with the constructed strains had stronger electroactivity and smaller internal resistance, respectively. Collectively, these results demonstrate for the first time that overexpression of nanowire proteins increases the biomass and electroactivity of anode‐attached microbial biofilms. Moreover, this study provides a new way for enhancing the electrical outputs of MFCs.

Iron cobalt-doped carbon nanofibers anode to simultaneously boost bioelectrocatalysis and direct electron transfer in microbial fuel cells: Characterization, performance, and mechanism

Abstract:A self-supporting electrode (FeCo-MOF/CNFs) combining iron cobalt bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (FeCo-MOFs) with carbon nanofibers (CNFs) was applied as the anode of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The introduction of FeCo-MOFs enhanced graphitization degree and electrical conductivity, which endowed FeCo-MOF/CNFs with excellent electrocatalytic performance and good biocompatibility. The hierarchical porous structure of FeCo-MOF/CNFs provided abundant attachment sites for electroactive bacteria (EAB) and facilitated rapid electron transfer. The MFC equipped with FeCo-MOF/CNFs anode (FeCo/CNFs-MFC) exhibited considerable power generation output (maximum power density: 5.3 ± 0.2 W/m2, coulombic efficiency: 54 ± 4 %). In addition, FeCo/CNFs-MFC achieved a direct electron transfer (DET) catalytic current density of 0.63 A/m2. FeCo-MOF/CNFs could simultaneously enhance the bioelectrocatalysis activity and promote the DET process of EAB, which provided an effective way to improve the sluggish extracellular electron transport process of the MFC anode.
Synergistic improvement of Shewanella loihica PV-4 extracellular electron transfer using a TiO2@TiN nanocomposite

Abstract:Extracellular electron transfer (EET) allows microorganisms to perform anaerobic respiration using insoluble electron acceptors, including minerals and electrodes. EET-based applications require efficient electron transfer between living and non-living systems. To improve EET efficiency, the TiO2@TiN nanocomposite was used to form hybrid biofilms with Shewanella loihica PV-4 (PV-4). Chronoamperometry showed that peak current was increased 4.6-fold via the addition of the TiO2@TiN nanocomposite. Different biofilms were further tested in a dual-chamber microbial fuel cell. The PV-4 biofilm resulted a maximum power density of 33.4 mW/m2, while the hybrid biofilm of the TiO2@TiN nanocomposite with PV-4 yielded a 92.8% increase of power density. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses showed a lower electron-transfer resistance in the hybrid biofilm. Biological measurements revealed that both flavin secretion and cytochrome c expression were increased when the TiO2@TiN nanocomposite presented. These results demonstrated that the TiO2@TiN nanocomposite could synergistically enhance the EET of PV-4 through altering its metabolism. Our findings provide a new strategy for optimizing biotic-abiotic interactions in bioelectrochemical systems.

In Situ Biosynthesis of FeS Nanoparticles Boosts Current Generation in Bioelectrochemical Systems Through Efficient Electron Transfer.

Abstract:The utility of electrochemical active biofilm in bioelectrochemical systems has received considerable attention for harvesting energy and chemical products. However, the slow electron transfer between biofilms and electrodes hinders the enhancement of performance and still remains challenging. Here, using Fe3O4 /L-Cys nanoparticles as precursors to induce biomineralization, a facile strategy for the construction of an effective electron transfer pathway through biofilm and biological/inorganic interface is proposed, and the underlying mechanisms are elucidated. Taking advantage of an on-chip interdigitated microelectrode array (IDA), the conductive current of biofilm that is related to the electron transfer process within biofilm is characterized, and a 2.10-fold increase in current output is detected. The modification of Fe3O4/L-Cys on the electrode surface facilitates the electron transfer between the biofilm and the electrode, as the bio/inorganic interface electron transfer resistance is only 16% compared to the control. The in-situ biosynthetic Fe-containing nanoparticles (e.g., FeS) enhance the transmembrane EET and the EET within biofilm, and the peak conductivity increases 3.4-fold compared to the control. The in-situ biosynthesis method upregulates the genes involved in energy metabolism and electron transfer from the transcriptome analysis. This study enriches the insights of biosynthetic nanoparticles on electron transfer process, holding promise in bioenergy conversion.
Facile One-Step Strategy for Highly Boosted Microbial Extracellular Electron Transfer of the Genus Shewanella

Abstract:High performance of bacterial extracellular electron transfer (EET) is essentially important for its practical applications in versatile bioelectric fields. We developed a facile one-step approach to dramatically boost the bacterial EET activity 75-fold by exogenous addition of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na, 1 mM) into the electrochemical cells, where the anodic process of microbial EET was monitored. We propose that EDTA-2Na enables both the alternation of the local environment around the c-type cytochromes located on the outer membrane channels (OMCs), which therefore changes the redox behavior of OMCs in mediating the EET process, and the formation of densely packed biofilm that can further facilitate the EET process. As a synergistic effect, the highly boosted bacterial EET activity was achieved. The method shows good generality for versatile bioelectrical bacteria. We envision that the method is also applicable for constructing various bioelectric devices.
Boosting bioelectricity generation in microbial fuel cells via biomimetic Fe-N-S-C nanozymes

Abstract:Anode performance has been regarded as a crucial factor determining long-term stability and electricity generation of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which restricts by the difficult extracellular electron transfer (EET) on the microbe/anode interface. Herein, inspired by biological enzyme systems, this study synthesized the biomimetic nanozymes with Fe-N-S-C active sites as the anode materials of MFCs, which was similar to the hemes of c-type cytochromes (c-Cyts) for boosting EET process. As excepted, an obviously faster start-up and a much higher power density were achieved by the MFCs equipped with Fe-N-S-C nanozymes (startup time, 3.5 d; power density, 2366 ± 34 mW m-2) than that based on traditional carbon cloth (startup time, 5.6 d; power density, 1009 ± 26 mW m-2). Such unique features of Fe-N-S-C nanozymes anode not only greatly favored the bacterial adhesion and the electroactive bacteria enrichment on the anode surface, but also efficiently facilitated the EET process between the electroactive bacteria and anode surface. This study provided a feasible strategy for designing the novel MFC anode materials from the perspective of bionic enzyme.

Abstract:Dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria are capable of extracellular electron transfer (EET) to insoluble metal oxides as external electron acceptors for their anaerobic respiration, which is recognized as an important energy-conversion process in natural and engineered environments, such as in mineral cycling, bioremediation, and microbial fuel/electrolysis cells. However, the low EET efficiency remains one of the major bottlenecks for its practical application. We report firstly that the microbial current generated by Shewanella loihica PV-4 (S. loihica PV-4) could be greatly improved that is up to ca. 115 fold, by adding antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanoparticles in the electrochemical reactor. The results demonstrate that the biocompatible, electrically conductive ATO nanoparticles acted as active microelectrodes could facilitate the formation of a cells/ATO composite biofilm and the reduction of the outer membrane c-type cytochromes (OM c-Cyts) that are beneficial for the electron transfer from cells to electrode. Meanwhile, a synergistic effect between the participation of OM c-Cyts and the accelerated EET mediated by cell-secreted flavins may play an important role for the enhanced current generation in the presence of ATO nanoparticles. Moreover, it is worth noting that the TCA cycle in S. loihica PV-4 cells is activated by adding ATO nanoparticles, even if the potential is poised at +0.2 V, thereby also improving the EET process. The results presented here may provide a simple and effective strategy to boost the EET of S. loihica PV-4 cells, which is conducive to providing potential applications in bioelectrochemical systems.

Abstract:The biology-material hybrid method for chemical-electricity conversion via microbial fuel cells (MFCs) has garnered significant attention in addressing global energy and environmental challenges. However, the efficiency of these systems remains unsatisfactory due to the complex manufacturing process and limited biocompatibility. To overcome these challenges, here, we developed a simple bio-inorganic hybrid system for bioelectricity generation in Shewanella oneidensis ( S. oneidensis ) MR-1. A biocompatible surface display approach was designed, and silver-binding peptide AgBP2 was expressed on the cell surface. Notably, the engineered Shewanella showed a higher electrochemical sensitivity to Ag + , and a 60 % increase in power density was achieved even at a low concentration of 10 μM Ag + . Further analysis revealed significant upregulations of cell surface negative charge intensity, ATP metabolism, and reducing equivalent (NADH/NAD + ) ratio in the engineered S. oneidensis -Ag nanoparticles biohybrid. This work not only provides a novel insight for electrochemical biosensors to detect metal ions, but also offers an alternative biocompatible surface display approach by combining compatible biomaterials with electricity-converting bacteria for advancements in biohybrid MFCs.

Tailoring Surface Properties of Electrodes for Synchronous Enhanced Extracellular Electron Transfer and Enriched Exoelectrogens in Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:An extracellular electron transfer (EET) process between an electroactive biofilm and an electrode is a crucial step for the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which is highly related to the enrichment of exoelectrogens and the electrocatalytic activity of the electrode. Herein, an efficient N- and Fe-abundant carbon cloth (CC) electrode with the comodification of iron porphyrin (FePor) and polyquaternium-7 (PQ) was synthesized using a facile solvent evaporation and immersion method and developed as an anode (named FePor-PQ) in MFCs. The surface structural characterizations confirmed the successful introduction of N and Fe atoms, whereas FePor-PQ achieved the N content of 9.59 at %, which may offer various active sites for EET. The introduction of PQ contributed to improving the surface hydrophilicity, providing the composite electrode good biocompatibility for bacterial attachment and colonization as well as substrate diffusion. Based on the advantages, the MFC with the FePor-PQ anode produced a maximum power density of 2165.7 mW m-2, strikingly higher than those of CC (1124.0 mW m-2), PQ (1668.8 mW m-2), and FePor (1978.9 mW m-2). Furthermore, with the EET mediated by the binding of flavins and c-type cytochromes on the outer membrane was enhanced prominently, the typical exoelectrogen Geobacter was enriched up to 55.84% in the FePor-PQ anode biofilm. This work reveals a synergistic effect from heteroatom coating and surface properties tailoring to boost both the EET efficiency and exoelectrogen enrichment for enhancing MFC performance, which also provides valuable insights for designing electrodes in other bio-electrochemical systems.

Abstract:Carbon materials are widely used as electrodes for bioelectrochemical systems (BES). However, a thick biofilm tends to grow on the electrode surface during continuous operation, resulting in constrained transport of electrons and nutrients at the cell-electrode interface. In this work, we tackled this problem by adopting a WO3-nanorods modified carbon electrode (C-WO3 nanorods), which completely suppressed the biofilm growth of Shewanella Oneidensis MR-1. Moreover, the C-WO3 nanorods exhibited high electric conductivity and strong response to riboflavin. These two factors together make it possible for the C-WO3 nanorods to maintain a sustained, efficient process of electron transfer from the MR-1 planktonic cells. As a consequence, the microbial fuel cells with C-WO3 nanorods anode showed more stable performance than the pure carbon paper and WO3-nanoparticles systems in prolonged operation. This work suggests that WO3 nanorods have the potential to be used as a robust and biofouling-resistant electrode material for practical bioelectrochemical applications. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Photoactive Manganese Ferrite-Modified Bacterial Anode to Simultaneously Boost Both Mediated and Direct Electron Transfer Processes in Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Photomicrobial fuel cells can efficiently improve the power density of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), but bimetallic spinel ferrite photoactive material-based microbial devices have not been investigated yet. Herein, a dissimilatory iron-reducing bacterium, Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 (S. putrefaciens CN32), is selected as a model bacterium due to its possible enhanced affinity with iron-containing photoactive materials. Three bimetallic spinel ferrite nanoparticles, cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4), and manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4), were used to modify the surface of S. putrefaciens CN32 for photo-MFCs, showing that MnFe2O4 has the best catalytic effect. Results reveal that these nanoparticle coatings on bacteria not only enhance direct electron transfer mediated by outer membrane c-type cytochromes (OMCs) while serving as conductive paths for charge transport between bacteria and the electrode surface but also significantly promote bacterial growth for increased flavin production from S. putrefaciens CN32. In addition, the extracellular electron transfer can be greatly accelerated with the assistance of photosensitive MnFe2O4 nanoparticles under visible light. This work demonstrates that the photomicrobial anode can simultaneously enhance both mediated and direct electron transfer processes and offers universal significance for photo-bio-electrocatalysis.
