Abstract:A rectangular optimal layout method using particle swarm optimization is proposed. The problems of rectangular optimal layout can be translated into optimization problem in the field of arrangement problem,and then the particle swarm optimization algorithm with the self-adaptive modulate regulation is used to search the solution space efficiently in order to find the optimal solution of the layout. The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated by the layout example.

Abstract:Multi-objective system reliability optimization has attracted the attention of several researchers, due to its importance in industry. In practice, the optimization regards multiple objectives, for example, maximize the reliability, minimize the cost, weight, and volume. In this article, an adaptive particle swarm optimization is presented for multi-objective system reliability optimization. The approach uses a Lévy flight for some particles of the swarm, for avoiding local optima and insuring diversity in the exploration of the search space. The multi-objective problem is converted to a single-objective problem by resorting to the weighted-sum method and a penalty function is implemented to handle the constraints. Nine numerical case studies are presented as benchmark problems for comparison; the results show that the proposed approach has superior performance than a standard particle swarm optimization.

Abstract:Importance sampling is a method to predict structural or mechanical reliability.The core of the method is to determine a sampling center point of importance sampling density function.At present,for most of the methods,iterative programs are adopted to compute a sampling center point,which make the importance sampling method limit on some simple limitation equation cases,thus limiting the application scope of importance sampling method.Adaptive importance sampling based on particle swarm method(AISP) can get the most probable failure point by solving the corresponding limitation state equation,consequently getting a sampling center point of importance sampling method.The method is not restricted to the form of the limitation state equation,explicit or implicit.Therefore,the proposed method enlarges the application scope of the importance sampling method.The numerical results indicate that the proposed method not only has a preferable prediction accuracy but also has a better efficiency than a direct sampling method.

Abstract:In this paper, a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) algorithm is proposed to solve the reliability redundancy optimization problem. This algorithm modifies the strategy of generating new position of particles. For each generation solution, the flight velocity of particles is removed. Whereas the new position of each particle is generated by using difference strategy. Moreover, an adaptive parameter is used to ensure diversity of feasible solutions. Experimental results on four benchmark problems demonstrate that the proposed MPSO has better robustness, effectiveness and efficiency than other algorithms reported in literatures for solving the reliability redundancy optimization problem.

Abstract:The reliability–redundancy allocation problem (RRAP) has been intensively studied to identify the optimal system design under several constraints, so as to maximize the system reliability as much as possible. Recently, the mixed redundancy strategy where both active redundant components and cold standby components can be simultaneously used by a subsystem has been introduced into the RRAP, leading to a more superior result than that of a subsystem with either active redundancy strategy or cold standby strategy. Nevertheless, in the existing studies, all the components deployed in a subsystem have to be homogeneous even if the mixed redundancy strategy is chosen. The strong premise is released in this paper by introducing heterogeneous components into the RRAP. The resulting optimization problem is resolved by proposing an improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with stochastic perturbation nature. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated by conducting a set of comparative studies on three benchmark problems. As observed in our study, the design flexibility introduced by our method can always yield a greater system reliability than that of the state-of-the-art methods. Most importantly, we also reveal that the switching reliability has significant influence on the optimal system configuration.

Abstract:As engineering systems become increasingly complex, reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) has been extensively studied in recent years and has made great progress. In order to achieve better optimization results, the mathematical model used needs to consider a large number of uncertain factors. Especially when considering mixed uncertainty factors, the contradiction between the large computational cost and the efficiency of the optimization algorithm becomes increasingly fierce. How to quickly find the optimal most probable point (MPP) will be an important research direction of RBDO. To solve this problem, this paper constructs a new RBDO method framework by combining an improved particle swarm algorithm (PSO) with excellent global optimization capabilities and a decoupling strategy using a simulated annealing algorithm (SA). This study improves the efficiency of the RBDO solution by quickly solving MPP points and decoupling optimization strategies. At the same time, the accuracy of RBDO results is ensured by enhancing global optimization capabilities. Finally, this article illustrates the superiority and feasibility of this method through three calculation examples.

Abstract:This paper proposes a particle swarm optimization algorithm to find the robust solution of an inverse problem in which uncertainties or perturbations are inevitable. To reduce the heavy computational burden for expected fitness evaluations, a strategy to assign expected fitness only to the best solution searched by a particle in every iterative cycle is proposed, a repository is introduced to memory the searched history and then employed to determine the expected fitness value of a specific solution. The simplex method is used to find the worst case solution of a potential candidate to consider hard constraint functions. The numerical results serve to demonstrate the pros and cons of the proposed algorithm and the necessity to devote efforts in the development of robust oriented optimal algorithms.

Abstract:Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a population based optimal method and very simple in both theory and numerical implementation. Nowadays, PSO has been recognized as a paradigm for numerical optimizations; however, PSO is easily trapped into a local optimum when solving multidimensional and complex problems. In order to overcome this difficulty, this paper presents a modified PSO with a dynamic inertia weight and an adaptive mutation operator. To verify the proposed PSO, we test it numerically on a set of well known bench mark functions as well as on an engineering problem, as to which it has shown better performance and efficiency while compared to the basic PSO and Beta PSO.

Abstract:On the basis of the geometrical meaning of structural reliability index, an optimum model for structural reliability analysis under arbitrary random variables was established and particles swarm optimization (PSO) was offered to settle the optimum model. The advantages of PSO were offered compared with traditional algorithm, and a project was illustrated to analysis the convergence course about PSO. The results show that PSO is feasible to solve the optimization problem of structural reliability index and improve the computed efficiency.
Global Optimization of Electromagnetic Devices using Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization with Novel Methodology

Abstract:Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm, and has been successfully applied to solve a wide scope of optimization design problems. However, it suffers from premature convergence and insufficient diversity at the later stages of the evolution. To address this problem in this work, a novel methodology is employed to choose the fittest particle and a new mutation mechanism is introduced in which a mutation operation is exerted on the global best particle to avoid the population from clustering and facilitating the particle to escape the sub-optimum more easily. Also, some parameter updating strategy is proposed to facilitate the algorithm to keep a good balance between exploration and exploitation searches. The numerical results on three case study are reported to validate the proposed methodology.

Abstract:Abstract Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) addresses the cost-effective integrity design of structures in the presence of inherent uncertain parameters. Processing this class of problem is challenging from the computational burden to determine the failure probability of structures violating the limit-state function. This paper proposes an efficient decoupling RBDO method that advantageously couples a comprehensive learning particle swarm optimization (CLPSO) algorithm with a subset simulation (SS), termed as SS-CLPSO approach. In essence, the proposed method iteratively performs the CLPSO assuming deterministic parameters based on the most probable point underpinning limit-state functions updated within the reliability evaluation process. Based on the CLPSO design data, the SS approximates the spectrum of limit-state functions under uncertain parameters, and hence enables the significant reduction of Monte-Carlo simulations for the failure probability prediction. The SS map outs the failure probability from the conditional samples constructed at each intermediate event. The proposed SS-CLPSO terminates the optimal solution to the RBDO problem as when the resulting failure probability converges to the permissible threshold. The applications of the present approach are illustrated through the steel truss design under probabilistic uncertain parameters and constraints.

Abstract:An algorithm-based method is proposed to control chaotic systems.The proposed method employs the particle-swarm-optimization algorithm evolving a neural network and uses the network to control chaos.The method requires no knowledge of the systems to be controlled.It is tested on the Logistic and Henon maps,and the simulation results show that the method could control the chaotic system to desired behavior.The proposed method is applicable to systems with unknown dynamic model and known experimental data.

Abstract:A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with robust solution searching methodologies is proposed. To reduce the heavy computational requirements for additional sampling points in the way of expected fitness assignments, a new mechanism for expected fitness evaluations is introduced, and a strategy for assigning expected fitness only to the best solutions of particles and their neighbors is proposed. Also, the neighborhood methodology is redefined in accordance with the goal of the proposed algorithm. Two case studies are reported to validate and to demonstrate the feasibilities and advantages of using the proposed algorithm in finding the robust solutions.

Abstract:Computing the sensitivity vector in the traditional first order reliability method may provide inaccurate reliability outcomes for discrete performance functions and inefficient computation burden for high-dimensional problems. In this study, two improved particle swarm optimization algorithms are proposed to enhance the convergence rate with global optimal results during the structural reliability analysis. The abilities for convergence speed and global convergence of the particle swarm optimization algorithm are improved using a novel hybrid method called particle swarm optimization-based harmony search algorithm (PSO–HS), and enhanced particle swarm optimization (EPSO). The proposed methods use a dynamic self-adaptive term to execute the local adjusting process. Using twelve numerical-based engineering problems, the structural reliability frameworks developed based on modified versions of particle swarm optimization algorithms are compared to numerous FORM algorithms and the current metaheuristic methods. Results indicated that the novel proposed methods using the improved PSO algorithms are more robust and efficient than the analytical FORM methods for solving high-dimensional engineering problems. Furthermore, compared to the previous metaheuristic approaches, the suggested methods enabled faster convergence.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel reliability-based sensitivity analysis (SA) method, namely relative convergence rate of random variables using particles swarm optimization (PSO). The convergence rate of a random variable during the optimum evolution process reflects the sensitivity of the objective function with respect to the random variables. An optimized group strategy is proposed to consider the fluctuation of the convergence rate of a variable during the optimum process. The coefficient of variation (COV) for candidate particles and the relative convergence rate of a random variable can be calculated using the particles in the optimized group. The smaller the COV for candidate particles, i.e., the larger the relative convergence rate, the more sensitive the objective function with respect to the variable. Three examples are available for the application of this method, and the results indicate that the sensitivity of the reliability index with respect to the variable obtained using the PSO technique and gradient of limit-state function is the same in the quantitative sense.

Abstract:Conventional optimization methods are not efficient enough to solve many of the naturally complicated optimization problems. Thus, inspired by nature, metaheuristic algorithms can be utilized as a new kind of problem solvers in solution to these types of optimization problems. In this paper, an optimization algorithm is proposed which is capable of finding the expected quality of different locations and also tuning its exploration-exploitation dilemma to the location of an individual. A novel particle swarm optimization algorithm is presented which implements the conditioning learning behavior so that the particles are led to perform a natural conditioning behavior on an unconditioned motive. In the problem space, particles are classified into several categories so that if a particle lies within a low diversity category, it would have a tendency to move towards its best personal experience. But, if the particle's category is with high diversity, it would have the tendency to move towards the global optimum of that category. The idea of the birds' sensitivity to its flying space is also utilized to increase the particles' speed in undesired spaces in order to leave those spaces as soon as possible. However, in desirable spaces, the particles' velocity is reduced to provide a situation in which the particles have more time to explore their environment. In the proposed algorithm, the birds' instinctive behavior is implemented to construct an initial population randomly or chaotically. Experiments provided to compare the proposed algorithm with the state-of-the-art methods show that our optimization algorithm is one of the most efficient and appropriate ones to solve the static optimization problems.

Abstract:In the software industry, two software engineering development best practices coexist: open-source and closed-source software. The former has a shared code that anyone can contribute, whereas the latter has a proprietary code that only the owner can access. Software reliability is crucial in the industry when a new product or update is released. Applying meta-heuristic optimization algorithms for closed-source software reliability prediction has produced significant and accurate results. Now, open-source software dominates the landscape of cloud-based systems. Therefore, providing results on open-source software reliability - as a quality indicator - would greatly help solve the open-source software reliability growth-modelling problem. The reliability is predicted by estimating the parameters of the software reliability models. As software reliability models are inherently nonlinear, traditional approaches make estimating the appropriate parameters difficult and ineffective. Consequently, software reliability models necessitate a high-quality parameter estimation technique. These objectives dictate the exploration of potential applications of meta-heuristic swarm intelligence optimization algorithms for optimizing the parameter estimation of nonhomogeneous Poisson process-based open-source software reliability modelling. The optimization algorithms are firefly, social spider, artificial bee colony, grey wolf, particle swarm, moth flame, and whale. The applicability and performance evaluation of the optimization modelling approach is demonstrated through two real open-source software reliability datasets. The results are promising.
