Abstract:Photoionization and fragmentation of CHF2Cl were studied with photoionization mass spectroscopy (PIMS) and photoionization efficiency spectroscopy (PIES) at NSRL. Ionization potential of CHF2Cl was obtained and major fragment ions CHF2+, CHFCl+, CHF+, and CF+ were observed with their appearance energies, respectively. Dissociation energies of some possible dissociation channels were deduced. The processes of photoionization and fragmentation of CHF2Cl are discussed based on the comparison between determined appearance energies and energies predicted by the Gaussian-2 calculations.

The most possible channels of the VUV photodissociative ionization have been analyzed.

Abstract:The photoionization and dissociative photoionizations of vinyl chloride have been studied both experimentally and computationally. In experiments, the photoionization efficiency spectra for C2H3Cl+, H+, C2H2Cl+, C2H3+ (two isomers) and Cl+, all from C2H3Cl, have been measured from 35 to 600 nm. The energetics of the photoionization processes have been examined by ab initio calculations. The theoretical study has provided insight into the possible isomeric structures for polyatomic fragments near the thresholds.

Abstract:The photoionization and photodissociation processes of C 2 Cl 4 were investigated under the supersonic molecular beam conditions by using a reflectron-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons from synchrotron radiation source. The photoionization mass spectrum and the photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves of the parent ion and some fragment ions were measured. The appearance potentials of these ions are obtained from their PIE curves. The formation enthalpies of some major ions and the dissociation energy of C 2 Cl 4 have been evaluated from these data. According to the experimental results and the energy calculated by G1 theory, the main possible channels of dissociative photoionization of C 2 Cl 4 have been discussed. In the future, we can detect C 2 Cl 4 with single photon ionization(SPI)-TOFMS technique using 118.0nm laser radiation. This is based on the mass spectrum obtained at the wavelenth by using synchrotron radiation source.

Abstract:The photoionization and dissociative photoionizations of carbon tetrachloride have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. In experiments, we have combined the techniques of synchrotron radiation, molecular beam and mass spectrometry to obtain the photoionization efficiency spectra for CCl3+, CCl2+, CCl+, C+ and Cl+. Thus we have measured the appearance energies of these ion fragments, which in turn lead to the various dissociation energies (D0) for CCln+ and CCln. Computationally, we have also obtained the D0 values by the ab initio Gaussian-2 method. The two sets of D0 values are in good agreement with each other.

Abstract:VUV dissociative photoionization of CHF2Cl in an energy region ∼12–22eV was investigated with photoionization mass spectroscopy (PIMS) using synchrotron radiation (SR). The ionization energy of CHF2Cl and appearance energies for its fragment ions, CHF2+, CF+, CHF+, CHFCl+, CF2+, Cl+, CFCl+, CCl+, HCl+, CF2Cl+, H+ and CHCl+, were determined with photoionization efficiency spectroscopy (PIES). The dissociation energies of some possible dissociation channels to produce those fragment ions were also determined experimentally. The total energies of CHF2Cl and its main photofragments were calculated using Gaussian 98 program and Gaussian – 2 calculations. And then, the ionization energy of CHF2Cl, appearance potentials for its fragment ions, and the dissociation energies to produce them were predicted using high accuracy energy model. The mechanism of photoionization and photodissociation of CHF2Cl was discussed deeply based on comparison of our experimental results with those predicted theoretically. According to our research results, the experimental dissociation energies were in reasonable agreement with either the calculated dissociation energies (Ed) or the reaction barriers V(G2) of possible photodissociation channels of CHF2Cl.

Abstract:Photoionization studies of chlorobenzene were performed by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons from the Heifei synchrotron radiation source. The photoionization mass spectrum and the photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves of both parent and fragment ions were measured. The appearance potentials of the major ions were obtained from their PIE curves. From these data, the standard fort-nation enthalpies of C6H5Cl+, C6H5+ and C4H3+ were evaluated, some dissociative energy was derived. We will be able to detect chlorobenzen with SPI-TOFMS and 118.0 nm laser light.

Abstract:Anionic fragments, F− and Cl− including two isotope species 35Cl− and 37Cl−, are observed in the photoexcitations of CFCl3. The ion-pair anion efficiency spectra of 35Cl− and 37Cl− are recorded in the photon energy range of 7.75–22.00 eV. The threshold of ion-pair dissociation CFCl3→CFCl2++Cl− is experimentally determined to be 7.94±0.04 eV. With the references of the high-resolution photoabsorption spectra reported in the literatures, we make tentative assignments of the electron valence-to-Rydberg transitions. Furthermore, the multibody ion-pair fragmentation processes to Cl− are discussed by comparison between the calculated thermochemical thresholds and the experimental efficiency spectrum.

Abstract:Two fundamental halocarbon ions, CH2Cl+ and CH3ClH+, were studied in the gas phase using the FELion 22-pole ion trap apparatus and the Free Electron Laser for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) at Radboud University, Nijmegen (the Netherlands). The vibrational bands of a total of four isotopologs, CH235,37Cl+ and CH335,37ClH+, were observed in selected wavenumber regions between 500 and 2900 cm−1 and then spectroscopically assigned based on the results of anharmonic force field calculations performed at the CCSD(T) level of theory. As the infrared photodissociation spectroscopy scheme employed probes singly Ne-tagged weakly bound complexes, complementary quantum-chemical calculations of selected species were also performed. The impact of tagging on the vibrational spectra of CH2Cl+ and CH3ClH+ is found to be virtually negligible for most bands; for CH3ClH+–Ne, the observations suggest a proton-bound structural arrangement. The experimental band positions as well as the best estimate rotational molecular parameters given in this work provide a solid basis for future spectroscopic studies at high spectral resolutions.

Abstract:Photoionization and photodissociation of tetrachloroethylene are investigated using positive and negative photoion mass spectrometry in the photon energy range 822eV. Ionization energy (9.33 +/- 0.05eV) of tetrachloroethylene and appearance energies of fragment ions C2 , C2 , C, C2Cl+ and CCl+ have been determined from the photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves. In addition, the spectral structure assigned as a vibrational progression (v 2) at 13.48eV is observed in the PIE curve of the parent cation. The preferred dissociation pathways near the threshold energies are proposed according to the present theoretical calculations (W1u) and the relative branch ratio computation. On the other hand, the negative ions 35Cl and 37Cl produced in the minor ion-pair dissociation channel are observed within the energy range. The dissociation pathways potentially related to the multi-body ion-pair dissociations are discussed with the help of the thermochemistry data obtained from the PIE spectra.

Abstract:Negative ions Cl(-), Cl(2)(-), CCl(-), CHCl(-), and CCl(2)(-) are observed in vacuum-ultraviolet ion-pair photodissociations of chloroform (CCl(3)H) using the Hefei synchrotron radiation facility, and their ion production efficiency curves are recorded in the photon energy range of 10.00-21.50 eV. Two similar spectra of the isotope anions (35)Cl(-) and (37)Cl(-) indicate the following: Besides the strong bands corresponding to the electron transitions from valence to Rydberg orbitals converging to the ionic states, some additional peaks can be assigned with the energetically accessible multibody fragmentations; a distinct peak at photon energy 14.55 eV may be due to a cascade process (namely, the Cl(2) neutral fragment at the highly excited state D'2(3)Π(g) may be produced in the photodissociation of CCl(3)H, and then the Cl(-) anions are produced in the pulsed-field induced ion-pair dissociations of Cl(2) (D'2(3)Π(g))); two vibrational excitation progressions, nν(2)(+) and nν(2)(+) + ν(3)(+), and nν(4)(+) and nν(4)(+) + ν(2)(+), are observed around C̃ (2)E and D̃ (2)E ionic states, respectively. The enthalpies of the multibody fragmentations to Cl(2)(-), CCl(-), CHCl(-), and CCl(2)(-) are calculated with the thermochemistry data available in the literature, and these multibody ion-pair dissociation pathways are tentatively assigned in the respective anion production spectra.

Abstract:Photoionization and dissociative photoionization of HFC-152a have been studied using synchrotron radiation and a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry (RTOF-MS). The ionization energy of parent molecule (11.94 +/- 0.04eV) and appearance potentials of various fragment ions have been determined by measuring their photoionization efficiency curves. Energies, symmetry point groups and ground electronic states of neutrals and cations of parent and its fragments have been calculated using GAUSSIAN-03 program with the G3 method. According to the theoretical and experimental results, some dissociation channels and their dissociation energies of CH3CHF2+ have been analyzed.

Abstract:The photoionization and photodissociation of oxalyl chloride have been studied by synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization mass spectrometry. The ionization energy of C2Cl2O2 (10.91±0.05eV) and appearance energies (AEs) for fragment ions CCl2O+, C2ClO2+, CClO+, C2O2+, CO2+, and Cl+ from C2Cl2O2 have been measured from the photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectra. In addition, three conformers of C2Cl2O2+ ion, namely trans-, gauche- and cis-conformer are investigated by using CBS-QB3 and W1u methods, which suggest that the existence of the cis-conformation parent ion C2Cl2O2+ is consistent with the second onset at 11.6eV in the experimental PIE curve and the associated calculations. The formation channels of fragment ions near the ionization thresholds are discussed by means of CBS-QB3 and W1u calculated results and thermochemistry results. The dominant fragment ion CClO+ is mainly originated from direct cleavage of the elongated C–C bond in the trans-conformer parent ion after ionization. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:The photoionization and photodissociation of bromoethane have been studied by using synchrotron radiation. The photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves of some fragments ions are measured, Based on these curves, the ionization potential of C2H5Br is determined to be 10. 29eV, and the appearance potentials of C2H5+, CH2Br+ are measured to be 10.60eV, 13.2eV respectively, We also have performed G2MP2 calculation on these fragments. According to experimental result and G2MP2 energy, the enthalpy of formation of ions C2H5+, CH2Br+, C2H5Br+, the bond energy of D-0(C2H5 - Br), D-0(C2H5+ - Br), D-0(CH2Br+ - CH3) have been evaluated. The most possible channels of the dissociation photoionization have been analyzed.
