Abstract:Endogenous, i.e. decision-dependent, uncertainty has received increased interest in the stochastic programming community. In the robust optimization context, however, it has rarely been considered. This work addresses multistage robust mixed-integer optimization with decision-dependent uncertainty sets. The proposed framework allows us to consider both continuous and integer recourse, including recourse decisions that affect the uncertainty set. We derive a tractable reformulation of the problem by leveraging recent advances in the construction of nonlinear decision rules, and introduce discontinuous piecewise linear decision rules for continuous recourse. Computational experiments are performed to gain insights on the impact of endogenous uncertainty, the benefit of discrete recourse, and computational performance. Our results indicate that the level of conservatism in the solution can be significantly reduced if endogenous uncertainty and mixed-integer recourse are properly modeled.
Robust stability for linear uncertain multi-time-delay system

Abstract:We focus on the problem of robust stability for the linear uncertain multi-time-delay system. Both the systems subjected to unstructured parametric uncertainties and structured parametric are concerned. Based on the fact that if the characteristic roots of a system lie in the left half complex plane then the system is asymptotically stable, several delay-independent asymptotically stable sufficient conditions for linear uncertain multi-time-delay systems are derived. These conditions only rely on the structure of the system; this can lead to reduction in conservatism. Some numerical example examples are given to show the superiority of our results to those in the literature.

Abstract:We mainly study the existence, structural stability and robustness of fuzzy slightly altruistic equilibria for a class of generalized multiobjective fuzzy games which are expressed as . Firstly, we introduce the concept of fuzzy slightly altruistic equilibrium and prove the existence of equilibrium for the by Fan–Glicksberg fixed point theorem. Secondly, the connections between and bounded rationality are discussed by an abstract rationality functions. Moreover, we construct the problem space of which is represented by and show that most are structurally stable and robust to -equilibrium on the meaning of Baire category. These results are new and extend some existing results in recent literature.

Abstract:Robust optimization of complex uncertain structures usually involves multiple conflicting and competing structural performance indices. Present approaches for achieving the final design of such an optimization problem always involve a decision-making process, which is a demanding task that requires the rich experience and expert skills of designers. To overcome the difficulty, an interval robust equilibrium optimization approach is proposed to find the optimal design of complex uncertain structure based on the robust equilibrium strategy for multiple conflicting and competing structural performance indices. Specifically, a new concept of closeness and crossing coefficient between interval boundaries (CCCIBs) is proposed atfirst, based on which the tri-dimensional violation vectors of all interval constraints can be calculated and the feasibility of a design vector can be assessed. Then, the robust equilibrium assessment of multiple objective and constraint performance indices is investigated, based on the results of which the feasible design vectors can be directly ranked according to the robust equilibrium strategy for all structural performance indices. Subsequently, the algorithm for the robust equilibrium optimization of complex uncertain structures is developed by integrating the Kriging technique and nested genetic algorithm. The validity, effectiveness, and practicability of the proposed approach are demonstrated by two illustrative examples.
Stable Formulations in Optimistic Bilevel Optimization

Abstract:Solutions of bilevel optimization problems tend to suffer from instability under changes to problem data. In the optimistic setting, we construct a lifted, alternative formulation that exhibits desirable stability properties under mild assumptions that neither invoke convexity nor smoothness. The upper- and lower-level problems might involve integer restrictions and disjunctive constraints. In a range of results, we at most invoke pointwise and local calmness for the lower-level problem in a sense that holds broadly. The alternative formulation is computationally attractive with structural properties being brought out and an outer approximation algorithm becoming available.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the stability of the solution sets for set optimization problems via improvement sets. Firstly, we consider the relations among the solution sets for optimization problem with set optimization criterion. Then, the closeness and the convexity of solution sets are discussed. Furthermore, the upper semi-continuity, Hausdorff upper semi-continuity and lower semi-continuity of solution mappings to parametric set optimization problems via improvement sets are established under some suitable conditions. These results extend and develop some recent works in this field.

Abstract:We consider the stability of Robust Optimization problems with respect to perturbations in their uncertainty sets. We focus on Linear Optimization problems, including those with a possibly infinite number of constraints, also known as Linear Semi-Infinite Optimization (LSIO) problems, and consider uncertainty in both the cost function and constraints. We prove Lipschitz continuity of the optimal value and {\epsilon}-approximate optimal solution set with respect to the Hausdorff distance between uncertainty sets and with an explicit Lipschitz constant that can be calculated. In addition, we prove closedness and upper semi-continuity for the optimal solution set mapping with respect to the uncertainty set.

Optimization on Pareto sets: On a theory of multi-objective optimization

Abstract:In multi-objective optimization, a single decision vector must balance the trade-offs between many objectives. Solutions achieving an optimal trade-off are said to be Pareto optimal: these are decision vectors for which improving any one objective must come at a cost to another. But as the set of Pareto optimal vectors can be very large, we further consider a more practically significant Pareto-constrained optimization problem, where the goal is to optimize a preference function constrained to the Pareto set. We investigate local methods for solving this constrained optimization problem, which poses significant challenges because the constraint set is (i) implicitly defined, and (ii) generally non-convex and non-smooth, even when the objectives are. We define notions of optimality and stationarity, and provide an algorithm with a last-iterate convergence rate of $O(K^{-1/2})$ to stationarity when the objectives are strongly convex and Lipschitz smooth.

Abstract:We consider the extended Newton method for approaching a Pareto optimum of a multiobjective optimization problem, establish quadratic convergence criteria, and estimate a radius of convergence ball under the assumption that the Hessians of objective functions satisfy an L-average Lipschitz condition. These convergence theorems significantly improve the corresponding ones in [J. Fliege, L. M. G. Drummond, and B. F. Svaiter, SIAM J. Optim., 20 (2009), pp. 602-626]. As applications of the obtained results, convergence theorems under the classical Lipschitz condition or the gamma-condition are presented for multiobjective optimization, and the global quadratic convergence results of the extended Newton method with Armijo/Goldstein/Wolfe line-search schemes are also provided.

Abstract:Dual to the interval model, the diamond model proves to be an alternative powerful device for taking into account the variation of parameters in prescribed ranges. This paper deals with the robust stability of certain diamond polynomial families and the strict positive realness of certain diamond rational function families. By exploiting the geometric characterizations of their value sets, we show that, for the strict positive realness of the rational function family with the coefficients of numerator and denominator each varying in diamonds, the same property of only 24 specially selected extreme rational functions will suffice. An interesting result concerning the stability of the so-called simplex polynomial family is provided, namely, the stability of 4 extreme points and 2 exposed edges in this family will ensure the stability of the whole family. We also extend this result to the strict positive realness of the simplex rational function family where 30 extreme points and 2 exposed edges need to be checked. The geometric characterizations of their value sets are further investigated, and some sufficient conditions for the stability of the simplex polynomial family as well as their geometric interpretations are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a bounded rationality function of weakly cooperative equilibrium point of multi-objective population games (WCEPOMPG) by virtue of nonlinear scalarization function. We investigate lower semicontinuity of the bounded rationality function and present a relationship between the level set of zero of the bounded rationality function and WCEPOMPG. By applying these properties, we first consider the generalized well-posedness for WCEPOMPG in the setting of multiple-valued assumption of solution set. Then, we obtain the uniqueness of solution set on a dense residual set with the stable assumption of vector payoff functions. Moreover, we investigate the well-posedness of WCEPOMPG on the dense residual set. As a special case, we obtain the generalized well-posedness and well-posedness of cooperative equilibria for single-objective population games, respectively.

Abstract:The present paper studies a kind of robust optimization problems with constraint. The problem is formulated through Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs) with quadratic generators. A necessary condition is established for the optimal solution using a terminal perturbation method and properties of Bounded Mean Oscillation (BMO) martingales. The necessary condition is further proved to be sufficient for the existence of an optimal solution under an additional convexity assumption. Finally, the optimality condition is applied to discuss problems of partial hedging with ambiguity, fundraising under ambiguity and randomized testing problems for a quadratic g -expectation.

To address these challenges, our research explores the power of robust multi-objective optimization. Since portfolio managers frequently measure their solutions against benchmarks, we enhance the multi-objective min-regret robustness concept by incorporating these benchmark comparisons. This approach bridges the gap between theoretical models and real-world investment scenarios, offering portfolio managers more reliable and adaptable strategies for navigating market uncertainties. Our framework provides a more nuanced and practical approach to portfolio optimization under real-world conditions.

Abstract:This paper concerns discrete-time infinite-horizon stochastic control systems with Borel state and action spaces and universally measurable policies. We study optimization problems on strategic measures induced by the policies in these systems. The results are then applied to risk-neutral and risk-sensitive Markov decision processes, as well as their partially observable counterparts, to establish the measurability of the optimal value functions and the existence of universally measurable, randomized or nonrandomized, $\epsilon$-optimal policies, for a variety of average cost criteria and risk criteria. We also extend our analysis to a class of minimax control problems and establish similar optimality results under the axiom of analytic determinacy.

On the Effect of Bounded Rationality in Electricity Markets

Abstract:Nash equilibrium is a common solution concept that captures strategic interaction in electricity market analysis. However, it requires a fundamental but impractical assumption that all market participants are fully rational, implying unlimited computational resources and cognitive abilities. To tackle the limitation, level-k reasoning is proposed and studied to model the bounded rational behaviors. In this paper, we consider a Cournot competition in electricity markets with two suppliers, both following level-k reasoning. One is a self-interested firm and the other serves as a benevolent social planner. First, we observe that the optimal strategy of the social planner corresponds to a particular rationality level, where being either less or more rational may both result in reduced social welfare. We then investigate the effect of bounded rationality on social welfare performance and find that it can largely deviate from that at the Nash equilibrium point. From the perspective of the social planner, we characterize optimal, expectation maximizing and robust maximin strategies, when having access to different information. Finally, by designing its utility function, we find that social welfare is better off if the social planner cooperates with or fights the self-interested firm. Numerical experiments further demonstrate and validate our findings.

Abstract:This paper considers a class of stochastic control problems with implicitly defined objective functions, which are the sources of time-inconsistency. We study the closed-loop equilibrium solutions in a general controlled diffusion framework. First, we provide a sufficient and necessary condition for a strategy to be an equilibrium. Then, we apply the result to discuss two problems of dynamic portfolio selection for a class of betweenness preferences, allowing for closed convex constraints on portfolio weights and borrowing cost, respectively. The equilibrium portfolio strategies are explicitly characterized in terms of the solutions of some first-order ordinary differential equations for the case of deterministic market coefficients.

Abstract:In the paper, we consider both finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional optimization problems with inclusion-type and equality-type constraints. We obtain sufficient conditions for the stability in the weak topology of a solution to this problem with respect to small perturbations of the problem parameters. In the finite-dimensional case, conditions for the stability in the strong topology of the solution are obtained for the problem with equality-type constraints. These conditions are based on a certain implicit function theorem.

Abstract:Real-world multi-objective engineering problems frequently involve uncertainties stemming from environmental factors, production inaccuracies, and other sources. A critical aspect of addressing these problems, termed Multi-Objective Robust Optimization (MORO) problems, is the development of solutions that are both optimal and resilient to uncertainties. This paper proposes addressing these uncertainties through the application of Stackelberg game models, a novel approach involving the interaction of two players. The Leader searches for optimal and robust solutions and the Follower generates uncertainties based on the Leader's chosen solutions. The Follower seeks to tackle the most challenging uncertainties associated with the Leader's candidate solutions. Additionally, this paper introduces a novel metric to assess the robustness of a given set of solutions concerning specified uncertainties. Based on the proposed approach, a co-evolutionary algorithm is developed. A numerical study is then conducted to evaluate the algorithm by comparing its performance with those obtained by four benchmark algorithms on nine benchmark MORO problems. The numerical study also aims to assess its sensitivity to run parameter variations. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed approach's effectiveness in identifying a non-dominated robust set of solutions.

Social Shaping of Competitive Equilibriums for Resilient Multi-Agent Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we study multi-agent systems with decentralized resource allocations. Agents have local demand and resource supply, and are interconnected through a network designed to support sharing of the local resource; and the network has no external resource supply. It is known from classical welfare economics theory that by pricing the flow of resource, balance between the demand and supply is possible. Agents decide on the consumed resource, and perhaps further the traded resource as well, to maximize their payoffs considering both the utility of the consumption, and the income from the trading. When the network supply and demand are balanced, a competitive equilibrium is achieved if all agents maximize their individual payoffs, and a social welfare equilibrium is achieved if the total agent utilities are maximized. First, we consider multi-agent systems with static local allocations, and prove from duality theory that under general convexity assumptions, the competitive equilibrium and the social welfare equilibrium exist and agree. Compared to similar results in the literature based on KKT arguments, duality theory provides a direct way for connecting the two notions and for a more general (e.g. nonsmooth) class of utility functions. Next, we show that the agent utility functions can be prescribed in a family of socially admissible functions, under which the resource price at the competitive equilibrium is kept below a threshold. Finally, we extend the study to dynamical multi-agent systems where agents are associated with dynamical states from linear processes, and we prove that the dynamic the competitive equilibrium and social welfare equilibrium continue to exist and coincide with each other.
