Abstract:We review recent applications of the projected shell model to the high spin spectroscopy. In particular, various high spin phenomena related to band crossing and signature dependence, for which the standard cranked shell model encounters difficulties, are extensively discussed.

Abstract:High spin states in 159Ho were populated in the reaction 152Sm(11B, 4n) at 60 MeV. The rotational band based on the 7/2+[404] Nilsson configuration has been established and the rotational bands based on the 7/2-[523], 1/2+[411] and 1/2-[541] Nilsson configurations have been extended. The neutron band crossings of the various bands and the energy signature splitting of the 7/2-[523] bands are analysed in terms of the cranked shell model.

Abstract:The shell-model-like approach is implemented to treat the cranking many-body Hamiltonian based on the covariant density functional theory including pairing correlations with exact particle number conservation. The self-consistency is achieved by iterating the single-particle occupation probabilities back to the densities and currents. As an example, the rotational structures observed in the neutron-rich nucleus $^{60}\mathrm{Fe}$ are investigated and analyzed. Without introducing any ad hoc parameters, the bandheads, the rotational spectra, and the relations between the angular momentum and rotational frequency for the positive-parity band A and negative-parity bands B and C are well reproduced. The essential role of the pairing correlations is revealed. It is found that for band A, the band crossing is due to the change of the last two occupied neutrons from the $1{f}_{5/2}$ signature partners to the $1{g}_{9/2}$ signature partners. For the two negative-parity signature partner bands B and C, the band crossings are due to the pseudocrossing between the $1{f}_{7/2,5/2}$ and the $1{f}_{5/2,1/2}$ orbitals. Generally speaking, the deformation parameters $\ensuremath{\beta}$ for bands A, B, and C decrease with rotational frequency. For band A, the deformation jumps from $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\approx}0.19$ to $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\approx}0.29$ around the band crossing. In comparison with its signature partner band C, band B exhibits appreciable triaxial deformation.

Abstract:The classical and quantum model of high spin particles with spin-mass coupling is presented in this paper. The mass spectrum of the model is symmetric with respect to particle-antiparticle exchange. The quantum model contains elementary particles and the cluster states generating infinite degeneracy of the mass spectrum.

Abstract:Multi-quasiparticle high-K states in Hf-174 are studied in the framework of the projected shell model. The calculation reproduces well the observed ground-state band as well as most of the two- and four-quasiparticle rotational bands. Some as yet unobserved high-K isomeric states in Hf-174 are predicted. Possible reasons for the existing discrepancies between calculation and experiment are discussed. It is suggested that the projected Shell model may be a useful method for studying multi-quasiparticle high-K isomers and the K-mixing phenomenon in heavy deformed nuclei.

Abstract:The study of nuclear isomer properties and the isomer applications is a current research focus of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics. Theoretical description of nuclear isomers, the surrounding states, and the interplay of them becomes an important issue. In this article, we present the projected shell model method for describing excited nuclear states in general, and for treating K -isomers in particular. With some examples, we emphasize how to apply the modern nuclear many-body technique to calculate K -isomers and normal excited states on an equal footing.

Abstract:Observed rotational bands that terminate or appear to terminate at very high spin are analyzed within the configuration constrained cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (unpaired CNS or CNSB with pairing) formalism. Spin values for the nuclei discussed reach or come close to the maximum spin that can be built within the Z,N=50–82 shells. Configurations are distinguished not only by the number of particles in high- j and low- j shells within each N shell but, in some cases, also by the number of particles in pseudospin partners like d5/2g7/2 and s1/2d3/2 . Configurations in Dy156 and Hf164 , which terminate at I≈60 , are well understood in terms of their occupation of open j shells or groups of j shells. The bands in Dy156 are tentatively observed up to termination while the bands in Hf164 are still a few spin units away. These terminating states are built with up to 18 aligned particles or 18 particles+holes outside a core. The core is built from nucleons in filled j shells, which gives no contribution to the spin. Analysis of the high-spin bands in Xe125,126 and Ce131,132 suggests that bands in Xe126 and Ce132 are observed to terminate at similar spin values, where terminating bands in Xe126 are observed high above yrast. It is remarkable that the deformed mean field, plus single-particle configurations, is able to provide such a comprehensive description of known experimental levels in nuclei up to spin 60ħ and beyond. Abstract:The ground state band was recently observed in the superheavy nucleus (256)Rf. We study the rotational properties of (256)Rf and its neighboring even-even nuclei by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia of the ground state bands in these nuclei are well reproduced by the theory. The spin of the lowest observed state in (256)Rf is determined by comparing the experimental kinematic moments of inertia with the PNC-CSM calculations and agrees with previous spin assignment. The effects of the high order deformation epsilon(6) on the angular momentum alignments and dynamic moments of inertia in these nuclei are discussed.

Abstract:The projected shell model is used to study the multi-quasiparticle and collective excitations of 178Hf. With an axially symmetric basis, the spin-16 isomer at 2.4 MeV appears to be well separated in energy/spin space from other configurations. However, projected energy surface calculations suggest that 178Hf has significant softness to axially asymmetric shapes, which can strongly modify the level distribution. The implications for photodeexcitation of the isomer are discussed.

Abstract:A spin-adapted coupled-cluster (SA-CC) scheme based on the additional consideration of spin constraints is proposed for the quantum chemical treatment of high-spin open-shell cases. Its computational feasibility is demonstrated via a pilot implementation within the singles and doubles approximation. Test calculations indicate that the suggested SA-CC scheme provides results of similar accuracy as the more traditional schemes without spin adaptation.

Abstract:The projected shell model with configuration mixing for nuclear chirality is developed and applied to the observed rotational bands in the chiral nucleus 130Cs. For the chiral bands, the energy spectra and electromagnetic transition probabilities are well reproduced. The chiral geometry illustrated in the K plot and the azimuthal plot is confirmed to be robust against the configuration mixing. The other rotational bands are also described in the same framework.

Abstract:Motivated by recent spectroscopy data from fission experiments, we apply the projected shell model to study systematically the structure of strongly deformed, neutron-rich, even-even Nd and Sm isotopes with neutron number from 94 to 100. We perform calculations for rotational bands up to spin I = 20 and analyze the band structure of low-lying states with quasiparticle excitations, with emphasis given to rotational bands based on various negative-parity two-quasiparticle (2-qp) isomers. Experimentally known isomers in these isotopes are described well. The calculations further predict proton 2-qp bands based on a 5(-) and a 7(-) isomer and neutron 2-qp bands based on a 4(-) and an 8(-) isomer. The properties for the yrast line are discussed, and quantities to test the predictions are suggested for future experiment.

Spectral Statistics in Particles-Rotor Model and Cranking Model

Abstract:Spectral statistics for six particles in single-j and two-j model coupled with a deformed core are studied in the frames of particles-rotor model and cranking shell model. The nearest- neighbor-distribution of energy levels and spectral rigidity are studied as a function of the spin or cranking frequency, respectively. The results of single-j shell are compared with those in two-j case. The system becomes more regular when single-j space (i(13/2)) is replaced by two-j shell (g(7/2) + d(5/2)), although the basis size of the configuration space is unchanged. However, the degree of chaoticity of he system changes slightly when configuration space is enlarged by extending single-j shell (i(13/2)) to two-j shell (i(13/2) + g(9/2)). Nuclear chaotic behavior is studied when we take a two-body interaction as delta force and pairing interaction, respectively.

Abstract:While tunable filters are a recent development in night time astronomy, they have long been used in other physical sciences, e.g. solar physics, remote sensing and underwater communications. With their ability to tune precisely to a given wavelength using a bandpass optimized for the experiment, tunable filters are already producing some of the deepest narrowband images to date of astrophysical sources. Furthermore, some classes of tunable filters can be used in fast telescope beams and therefore allow for narrowband imaging over angular fields of more than a degree over the sky.

Abstract:High-spin states in the Xe-129 nucleus are studied with the reaction Sn-124(Be-9,4n) at a beam energy of 36 MeV. The level scheme is extended significantly. For the positive-parity band, the alpha = +1/2 and the alpha = -1/2 signature components are combined to form a complete band structure based on the 3/2(+) state with spin and parity up to 21/2(+). For the negative-parity band based on the 11/2(-) state, the alpha = +1/2 signature component is newly established and both the alpha = +1/2 and the alpha = -1/2 signature components also form a complete band structure up to the 35/2(-) state. The positive-and negative-parity bands are proposed to originate from nu d(3/2) 3/2(+)[402] and nu h(11/2)11/2(-)[505] Nilsson configurations, respectively. A backbending is observed in the negative-parity band, which originates from the alignments of two h(11/2) protons according to crank shell model calculations. Based on the total Routhian surface and quasiparticle triaxial rotor model calculations, the negative-parity band is interpreted as a triaxially deformed shape with gamma approximate to -30 degrees, while the positive-parity band is associated with. softness, in accordance with previous studies. In the high-spin states, three decoupled bands and one oblate band with gamma approximate to -60 degrees are newly identified. The systematics and other characteristics of these bands are discussed.

Abstract:The high spin states of the neutron-rich odd-odd 106Tc nucleus have been reinvestigated by observing prompt γ-rays from the spontaneous fission of 252Cf. A previously known collective band is confirmed and expanded, and a new collective band is newly identified. Several levels in previous report in 106Tc are reexamined and they belong to the members of a band in 107Tc. The total Routhian surface （TRS） calculations show that the 106Tc has triaxial shape. The spins and parities as well as the configurations for these bands have been tentatively assigned according to the analysis of the angular momentum alignments.

Abstract:Conventional diagonalization methods to calculate nuclear energy levels in the framework of the configuration-interaction (CI) shell model approach are prohibited in very large model spaces. The shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) is a powerful technique for calculating thermal and ground-state observables of nuclei in very large model spaces, but it is challenging to extract nuclear spectra in this approach. We present a novel method to extract low-lying energy levels for given values of a set of good quantum numbers such as spin and parity. The method is based on imaginary-time one-body density correlation matrices that satisfy asymptotically a generalized eigenvalue problem. We validate the method in a light nucleus that allows comparison with exact diagonalization results of the CI shell model Hamiltonian. The method is applicable to other finite-size quantum many-body systems that can be described within a CI shell model approach.
