Abstract:RC column-steel beam (RCS) systems, a novel type of hybrid structure, have been used widely in recent decades owing to their excellent seismic performance and simple fabrication process. However, due to the effects of variable strengthening configurations on force-transfer mechanisms, the mechanical behavior of RCS connections has not been fully understood by existing experimental studies. This paper proposes a reliable finite-element model of RCS connections and investigated the effects of different strengthening configurations and design parameters on the seismic performance and shear mechanism. A detailed three-dimensional finite-element model was developed and validated against previously obtained experimental results, including load-displacement relationships and cracking patterns. Parametric studies based on the validated model were conducted. The studies showed that the axial load ratio significantly affects the failure mode and ductility of the connection. The load-carrying capacity of the connection is enhanced significantly when the concrete strength is increased. Furthermore, additional yield capacity of steel plates and transverse reinforcements has limited effects on crack propagation and strain state when adequate resistance can be provided.
Fiber Beam-Column Model for Diagonally Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams Incorporating Shear and Reinforcement Slip Effects

Abstract:Due to the improved energy-dissipation and deformation capacity compared to the conventionally reinforced concrete (RC) coupling beams, diagonally RC coupling beams are recommended by the ACI 318 code especially for a span-to-depth ratio of less than two and thus acquire more and more applications in coupled wall and core tube systems for tall buildings. This paper proposes a sufficiently accurate and efficient displacement-based fiber beam-column model for the nonlinear seismic analysis of diagonally RC coupling beams with span-to-depth ratios ranging between one and five. The model is developed on the platform of a general FEA package MSC.Marc. First, the conventional fiber beam-column element is modified to consider the flexural contribution of diagonal bars. Then the new section shear force-shear distortion and slip deformation rules are proposed and incorporated into the modified fiber element, respectively, since both the shear and reinforcement slip are critical mechanisms influencing the seismic performance of the beam. The equations for critical model parameters including the cracked shear stiffness and chord rotation limit are developed and verified based on the results of sixteen test specimens collected from previous research. The model is utilized to simulate the collected specimens together with a coupled wall system and proves to be a powerful tool for the nonlinear seismic analysis of diagonally RC coupling beams and coupled walls with satisfied accuracy, efficiency and modeling convenience.
Simplified Fiber Beam-column Element Considering Local Shear Effect

Abstract:Accurate and efficient beam-column elements are of great importance in predicting nonlinear response of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures under seismic loads.The fiber-based model could accurately predict flexural hysteretic response of RC members by using uniaxial stress-strain relations to model concrete and reinforcements, respectively [1,2].However, the fiber-based model fails to consider the shear deformation due to the plane-sections-remain-plane assumption, which limits its application in shear-critical members, such as short columns and coupling beams.So far, the shear response of fiber-based beam-column element was considered by two ways.First, the Timoshenko beam theory was applied along with fiber model to include the degree of freedom (DoF) of shear at the sectional level.In this way the multi-axial constitution model of concrete was generally required to consider the shearflexure interaction [3-6], which limits the computational feasibility and efficiency of the models.Another approach was to consider shear response by introducing a spring at the end of the beam-column member.In this case the flexural behavior of RC member was simulated by using fiber model, and the shear was modelled by elongation of the spring in transverse direction.As a result, the shear and flexural behaviors can be modelled separately with a higher efficiency compared to the former approach.It should be noted that the empirical force-deformation relations required by shear spring were generally obtained from global hysteresis tests.It means that the component-end lumped spring is incapable of modelling shear response of RC members which is sensitive to local shear deformation accurately [7][8][9][10].Therefore, this study presents a new beam-column element to consider local shear effect of member with reasonable numerical accuracy and computational efficiency.The flexure and axial response of the proposed element is modelled by traditional fiber model.The shear deformation is decomposed from the axial and flexural deformations in the element.The total transverse displacement of the element is induced by flexure and shear.The transverse displacement caused by flexure can be determined by element length and corresponding rotation, thus shear deformation is the subtraction of calculated flexure transverse displacement from total transverse displacement.The shear deformation in any segment of element can be calculated by this method.The shear deformation of the element can be obtained by summing the shear deformation of these segments.Finally the element stiffness matrix is assembled as the sum of shear and flexure stiffness using the principle of virtual work.It can be seen above that the local shear effect of the member can be considered by the proposed element, resulting in a more accurate prediction compared with component-end lumped spring.

Abstract:Conventional RC coupling beams have been widely used as key energy-dissipation components in frame-core tube structural systems for high-rise buildings. A model with sufficient efficiency, accuracy, and practicality is urgently needed for the seismic analysis of high-rise structures. According to test results, both the shear deformation and shear sliding mechanisms are critical to assessing the seismic performance of coupling beams. However, available shear models for beams and columns cannot give satisfactory results in modeling both mechanisms in finite-element analysis (FEA). To address this problem, this study takes into account the section shear force-shear strain and shear sliding laws in the traditional displacement-based fiber beam-column element, which is implemented into a general FEA package. A new section shear force-shear strain law, which can consider the pinching effect, strength and stiffness deterioration, shear capacity degradation, and arbitrary complex loading path is first proposed. In addition, a new section shear force-shear sliding strain law is developed to model the special shear sliding phenomenon. Then, shear sliding and shear compression limit formulas are given to determine different failure modes. Two beam-column elements, named the shear element and sliding element, are finally developed and combined to model the coupling beam. To verify the proposed model, 47 test specimens are collected and summarized. The formulas for the shear strength, cracked shear stiffness, and shear displacement limit are proposed and verified. Then, the model is applied to 16 test specimens. It is indicated that the model has sufficient accuracy, high efficiency, and convenient modeling procedure, which offers a reliable and powerful tool for seismic analysis of conventional RC coupling beams and high-rise structures. Abstract:Reinforced concrete (R/C) bridge pier with hollow section may undergo strongly nonlinear responses when subjecting severe earthquakes. The pier may perform flexure-shear coupling behavior, especially for the thin wall of the hollow section. Some simulation models accounting flexure-axial coupled effects were proposed, however, few simulation model is proposed for R/C hollow section bridge piers mainly impacted by the flexure-shear coupling. In this paper a beam-column element accounting for flexure-shear effect is presented. The mathematical theory for this element is flexibility-based formulation, and the section constructed by fibers can be treated as any kind of bi-axial materials. The cyclic soften membrane model (CSMM) constitutive relationship for plane bi-axial R/C components is used in the determination of the nonlinear behavior. Two cyclic pushover experiments were carried on scaled hollow section piers. The results deduced from the numerical model is compared with the experiment result. This fiber-based model provides sufficient accuracy and computational efficiency. The model has been implemented into the finite element program, OpenSees. And further researches will focus on the flexure-shear induced damage and collapse for bridge structures.
Fiber Section Based Flexure-Shear Coupling Analysis Model for RC Thin-Walled Piers

Abstract:Hollow section piers are often used in reinforced concrete(RC)bridges. It has been proved by earthquake damage investigation that the piers may perform flexure-shear coupling behavior,and eventually lead to pier failure and/or collapse. A fiber-section based RC pier simulation model considering flexure-shear coupling effect was presented in this paper. By introducing bi-axial material constitutive relationship into the determination of fiber deformation status,the sectional stiffness for beam column element can be obtained through the integration of fiber responses.Then the flexure-shear coupling Timoshenko beam element was implemented. The cyclic soften membrane model(CSMM)constitutive relationship was adopted for plane bi-axial RC components in the calculation of the nonlinear characteristic of fibers. The concrete uniaxial material model in CSMM was improved. By assuming the compatibility condition between each fiber and making use of the Newton iteration algorithm,the fiber and section responses were determined. At last,a scaled hollow section pier with quasi-static test result was compared with the numerical model,and the results show good agreement. The strength and stiffness degradation and pinching effect caused by flexure-shear coupling effect are captured by this model. And the fiber model shows sufficient accuracy and computational efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, a displacement-based fiber beam element including flexure-shear interaction is developed. The element is based on the conventional Timoshenko beam theory, and the section behavior is modeled with the well-known fiber section approach, where the section is divided into steel fibers and concrete fibers. The Menegotto-Pinto model is used for steel fibers and a multi-dimensional softened damage-plasticity model, which accounts for the compression-softening effect of reinforced concrete, is adopted for concrete fibers. The axial-flexure-shear interaction can be well reflected in both section level and material level since the normal-shear coupling is reflected naturally in the multi-dimensional material constitutive law. Besides, the concrete material parameters are related to fracture energy to avoid mesh-sensitivity issue of softening problems. The numerical implementation of the proposed element, including the finite element approximation and fiber state determination, is also discussed in detail. The element is validated through the test results for a series of simply supported reinforced concrete beams under monotonic loading and reinforced concrete columns and wall under cyclic loading, and the results indicate that the element is capable to reproduce the shear behaviors of reinforced concrete members under different loading cases. Flexural-shear Analysis Model for Reinforced Concrete Bridge Piers

Abstract:The analysis model for RC bridge piers with flexural-shear interaction was proposed based on the Modified Compression Field Theory(MCFT)and fiber element model.In the analysis model,the shear force-shear displacement relationship was obtained by the MCFT,and implemented in a nonlinear fiber analysis program to simulate the flexure-shear-axial interaction of the bridge piers.The accuracy of the analysis model was verified by comparing with quasi-static test results of 6circular bridge piers failed in flexural-shear mode.It is found that the yield strength,ultimate strength and elastic shear stiffness of the bridge piers predicted by MCFT are very accurate.The shear cracking is the key influencing factor induced the changing of shear stiffness,while the flexural cracking and yielding of the longitudinal bars has little influence.Compared with test results,the proposed flexural-shear interaction analysis model simulated the hysteretic curves,flexural and shear deformations of the bridge piers well.

Abstract:Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are the most critical structural components in buildings/bridges. For those with small span-to-depth ratios and/or insufficient transverse reinforcing details, it will suffer from shear type or flexure-shear type failure modes, which are challenge to be represented in numerical simulation. For instance, conventional fiber element employs the Euler Bernoulli beam theory which neglects the shear deformation, thus it will over-estimate the structural responses of flexure-shear and shear-critical columns. This paper presents a new fiber element to include the flexure-shear interaction for cyclic analysis of RC structures. The element adopts a force-based formulation and extends the original fiber element from the Euler-Bernoulli theory basis to the Timoshenko theory basis by introducing shear deformations at the section level. Then the multi-axial softened damage-plasticity model is used for concrete fibers and the uniaxial modified Menegotto Pinto model is used for reinforcement fibers. The concrete-steel coupling effect that is typical for reinforced concrete subjected to shear, i.e., tension-stiffening and compression softening, are also considered through modifying the material constitutive laws. To overcome the difficulties in force-based element state determination and enhance the computational efficiency, the non-iterative state determination strategy is adopted for the element implementation. Meanwhile, to avoid the localization issue (i.e., integration point-dependency) arising from strain-softening behavior, an interpolatory quadrature is used for the numerical integration of the element. Finally, the element is validated through numerical simulations of a series of column tests under cyclic loadings. The results indicate that the element can retain the performance in modeling flexure-critical columns as conventional Euler Bernoulli fiber element, while demonstrating significant superiors in modeling flexure-shear and shear-critical columns.
Simulation of an rc bridge column shake-table test using a fiber beam-column model considering reinforcement anchorage slip

Abstract:Reinforcement slip in footing can make a significant contribution to the total lateral displacement of a reinforced concrete (RC) column, and thereby greatly influenced the seismic responses. In this paper, to simulate a flexure-dominated RC bridge column shake-table test, a modified fiber beam-column element model considering reinforcement slip in footing is developed and implemented in a general commercial finite element (FE) package. First, on the basis of an effective macro model for calculating anchorage slip and a classical uniaxial stress–strain relationship of rebar, the reinforcement anchorage slip in the footing is formulated. The macro model assumed a stepped bond stress to deal with the bond–slip relationship, and the slip is derived by integrating the strain over the development length. Then, the derived anchorage slip is introduced into the framework of the conventional fiber element model. By considering the rebar fiber strain in the footing fiber element as the sum of the rebar deformation and the anchorage slip, the stress–strain skeleton curve and the hysteretic law of rebar are modified. Finally, the shake-table test of a full-scale flexure-dominated bridge column is simulated to validate the developed model. Comparisons indicate the considerably improved accuracy of the developed model in simulating the column displacement time-histories, base moment–column displacement responses, and base moment–base curvature responses. The developed model shows good accuracy in simulating the moment capacity and column stiffness, whereas the conventional fiber model significantly overestimates the column lateral stiffness. In addition, the measured lateral displacement ratio caused by the fixed-end rotation in each test is well predicted by the developed model. Therefore, the model is validated at structural, sectional and micro levels.
Seismic Analysis Of R/C Short Column Member With Modified Csmm, Fa-Stm And Ra-Stm Theory

Abstract:Reinforced concrete (R/C) column memberswith low aspect ratio are adopted in high rise buildings frequently. This kind of member need to resist high axial loading and may suffer cyclic flexure-shear coupling deformation when subjecting severe earthquakes. The performance behavior of the structures with R/C short column is hard to predict. Kinds of analysis methods accounting flexure-axial coupled effects were proposed, however, few simulation model is proposed for R/C short column mainly impact by the flexure-shear coupling in three-dimensional situation. In this paper an improvement of Cyclic Soften Membrane Model (CSMM), basically deduced from Rotational Angle-Soften Truss Model (RA-STM) and Fixed Angle-Soften Truss Model (FA-STM), is proposed. Firstly, the equivalent uniaxial model adopted in CSMM, RA-STM and FA-STM is revised and develop based on Chang and Mander's concrete model to take into pinching effect. Secondly, the iteration algorithm of principle direction determination of strain and stress field is developed, which reduce the unstable and wrong direction phenomenon in Mohr Circle calculation in CSMM and FA-STM. Thirdly, the orthogonal strain directions with opposite sign is treated specially, for the unconditionally unstable caused by concrete constitutive function (one in tension and one in compression, while suddenly stepped into inversed strain status). The model has been implemented into the finite element program, OpenSees. Lateral cyclic static experiments were carried out on two RC short columns. The results deduced from the numerical model is compared with the experiment results, and it shows good agreements for the strength degradation and pinching effect. This result suggest that the FA-STM model provides sufficient accuracy and computational efficiency for nonlinear issues. And further researches will focus on the modification of the membrane material model for shell element and for large deformation issues.
Integrating of Nonlinear Shear Models into Fiber Element for Modeling Seismic Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams, Wall Piers, and Overall Coupled Wall Systems

Abstract:Reinforced concrete (RC) coupled wall systems, compared with RC shear wall without opening, have more complex nonlinear behavior under the extreme earthquake loads due to the existence of coupling beams. The behavior characteristics induced by nonlinear shear deformation such as shear–flexure interaction, pinching effect, strength and stiffness deterioration are clearly observed in numerous cyclic tests of RC coupling beams and shear walls. To develop an analytical model capable of accurately and efficiently assessing the expected seismic performance of RC coupled wall systems, it is critical to define the appropriate key components models (i.e., nonlinear models of RC wall piers/shear walls and coupling beams). Classic fiber beam element based on the theory of Euler–Bernoulli beam is frequently adopted to simulate the nonlinear responses of slender RC wall piers and coupling beams in the literature because it is able to accurately model the response characters from interaction of axial–bending moment at the section level. However, classic fiber beam element cannot capture the nonlinear behaviors of non-slender structures mainly controlled by nonlinear shear deformation. To overcome this shortcoming, a modified force-based fiber element (MFBFE) including shear effect is introduced and used as the analysis element of non-slender RC coupling beams and shear walls. At the section level, a novel shear model for RC coupling beams and an existed shear model for RC shear walls are respectively added to this fiber element to simulate nonlinear responses of these two key components. The analytical model for RC coupled walls hence is formed through integrating the proposed models of these two key components. The validations with different experimental results of cyclic tests including key components and structural system reported in the literature using these proposed models are performed. Good agreements are achieved for all of these proposed models via comparisons between predicted results and experimental data.
Experimental study and analysis of flexural behavior of ECC/RC composite beams

Abstract:Engineered cementitious composite (ECC) has ultra-high toughness and excellent crack controlling ability.A type of ECC/RC(reinforced concrete) composite beam constructed with the U-shape permanent formwork made by ECC is proposed, in order to improve the durability and mechanical performance.A full-range nonlinear analysis method for flexural behavior of ECC/RC composite beam is presented, and three interface treatments of composite beam are designed to study the flexural behavior.Results indicate that, compared with RC beam, both the load bearing capacity and ductility of composite beam are increased.Furthermore, the crack width of composite beam is less than 100 μm when the applied load is lower than 80% of the peak load.The interface treatments in ECC/RC composite beams have little effect on the flexural strength, but they affect the member ductility to a certain extent.The calculated load-displacement curves by the proposed method are shown to be consistent with the test data.Based on the method of effective moment of inertia suggested by ACI code, a simplified calculation method of deflection for ECC/RC composite beam at the serviceability limit state is proposed, and the equations for the inertia moment of the full cracked section based on the internal force equilibrium are also obtained.The predicted deflection based on the proposed simplified calculation method shows good consistence with the experimental results.
Model for Elasto-Plastic Analysis of Multistory and Highrise Steel-Concrete Composite Frame Systems

Abstract:This paper presents a mixed finite-element model combining the fibered beam element and the layered shell element using the general finite-element program MSC.MARC(2005r2) for global elasto-plastic analysis of multistory and highrise structures with fully shear connected steel-concrete composite frames subjected to the combined action of gravity and monotonic lateral loads.The model was verified by a number of tests and numerical examples.Modeling details of the steel beam,the steel column and the reinforced concrete(RC) slab were suggested and the realization of beam-slab compatibility and beam-column semirigidity were discussed.According to the calculation results,the beamcolumn semirigidity and the slab space effect are the two critical factors influencing the structural behavior,but these two factors haven't been considered simultaneously in some previous models.Since the slip effect between the steel beam and the concrete slab exerts negligible influence on the global calculation results of the structural system verified by the test results,the model in this paper has neglected the slip effect in order to simplify the modeling procedure and enhance the calculating efficiency.

Abstract:Few studies have reported on the flexural behavior of multi–span reinforced concrete (RC) structures strengthened using externally–bonded (EB) systems such as fiber–reinforced polymer (FRP) and fiber–reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) systems. This paper introduces a theoretical model that can accurately predict the flexural behavior of such structures with a focus on their rotational capacity (curvature) and their moment redistribution response between critical sections. Unlike the available models, the proposed model accounts for the variation in the structure's stiffness during loading including that of the strengthened section. The model can precisely determine the failure mode, the rotational capacity of the formed plastic hinges and estimate the moment redistribution ratio (MRR) between the critical sections at any applied load. The efficiency of the model was validated against the experimental results of eleven FRCM–strengthened two–span RC beams (including two control beams) previously tested by the authors. A good agreement between the experimental and the theoretical results was obtained with average experimental–to–theoretical ratios of 1.0 and 0.99 for the load carrying–capacity and MRR, respectively. To accurately determine the mid–span deflections of continuous EB–strengthened structures, a new reduction parameter was incorporated in the CSA–A23.3–19 (2019) formulations to account for the variation in stiffness of the strengthened section. The new formulations substantially enhanced the prediction of the deflection capacity of the strengthened structures with an average experimental–to–theoretical ratio of 1.02 versus 1.7 when CSA formulations were used.

Abstract:The load effects of carbon fiber reinforced polymers(CFRP) strengthened reinforced concrete(RC)beams are simulated with the nonlinear finite element method when the structures bear the load.Based on the flexural experiment of 4 pieces of CFRP strengthened RC beams,the building of three-dimensional finite element model are discussed,which includes: elements choosing and the constitutive principle of concrete,steel,CFRP and CFRP-concrete interface and the choosing of the proper coefficient of interface shearing force transmission.The experimental simulation of the flexural property for the beams is completed with the commercial nonlinear finite element software of ANSYS.It is shown that the simulation results and the measuring results of strains for compressive concrete,tensile steel,CFRP laminates and mid-span deflection,ultimate flexural bearing force are nearly consistence,and this proves the validity of finite element simulation.

Abstract:This paper presents a finite element analysis (FEA) modeling to study the flexural performance of rectangular concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) members with compact, non-compact or slender element sections. Seventy test results are used to verify the FEA modeling. Generally good agreements were achieved in the ultimate bending capacity and the curvilinear trends of the moment versus mid-span deflection relations of the composite member between the experimental results and the FEA results. The FEA modeling is then used to investigate the residual failure patterns of the core concrete, the typical residual deformations of outer steel tube and the stress and strain distributions across the composite section in the whole loading procedure. Analysis results show that interaction of steel and concrete in the composite beam offers stress redistribution in steel and concrete which makes the rectangular CFST beam have high flexural capacity and ductility. Finally, the reliability analysis method is used to calibrate the existing design formulae on composite beam in EC4 (2004), AISC (2010) and DBJ/T13-51-2010 (2010). It was found that all the design formulae achieved adequate reliability index.
Using XFEM to Model the Effect of Different Axial Compression on the Hysteretic Behaviour of the Flexure‐dominant RC Columns

Abstract:SummaryThe axial compression ratio has a significant effect on the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to seismic loads. However, limited numerical models have been found to be able to consider the effect of axial compression ratio in mesoscopic scale. To achieve a sound understanding of the hysteretic mechanism of RC columns with different axial compression ratios, a novel modelling method was developed by employing the following techniques: (a) the extended finite element method for modelling crack initiating and propagating in concrete; (b) the contact algorithm for modelling the crack closure; and (c) the Cartesian type “connector” for modelling the interaction between concrete and steel bars. The effectiveness of the proposed model was validated in macroscopic scale by the results of a previous experimental study. Further analysis indicates that the axial compression ratio controls the axial deformations of RC columns, thus leads to different performances of concrete and steel under seismic loads. Based on the individual flexural contributions of the concrete and the steel bars, the effect of the axial compression ratio and the pinching effect is explained in a finer scale. The analytical results shed some light on the seismic mechanism of RC columns with different axial compression ratios.
Flexural Behaviours of CFRP Sheets Reinforced Steel-Concrete Composite Beams

Abstract:Abstract The finite element simulation was performed for 8 carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) sheets reinforced steel-concrete composite beams via ABAQUS software, in an effort to further investigate their mechanical properties. Next, the influences of shear connection degree and elasticity modulus, width and constitutive relation of CFRP sheets on the mechanical properties of steel-concrete composite beams were studied. Subsequently, their load-dependent change laws of midspan deflection were reported in detail. The simulation results show that the reinforcement effect on the negative moment region of each composite beam is improved with the increase in the elasticity modulus, width of CFRP sheets and the shear connection degree.

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional distributed plasticity model element is formulated and implemented into an open-source computational platform (OpenSees) to enhance nonlinear modeling approaches for lateral force resisting systems utilizing diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams. The model incorporates a fiber-based concrete cross-section along with truss elements to represent the diagonal reinforcement and contact elements to model reinforcing bar slip at the beam-wall interface. The model is validated using test results from five different experiments that include variations in cross-section geometries, reinforcement configurations, and boundary conditions. Notably, two test specimens shared identical attributes except for their cross-sectional shapes (with and without a slab), whereas another pair were identical except for the degree of axial restraint provided. The final specimen utilized both longitudinal and diagonal reinforcement along the length of the beam. The model accurately predicted overall shear versus chord rotation responses with errors < 5 % and axial growth responses with errors < 30 %. The proposed model provides enhanced modeling options for nonlinear analysis by enabling sensitivity studies to address the potential impacts of coupling beam axial restraint on coupling beam and coupled wall behavior.
