Abstract:Objective To sum up our experience of carotid endarterectomy(CEA).Methods Ninety-four cases of stenosis or occlusion of carotid artery(CA) were treated in our series, including 77 male and 15 female, from 2001 in our hospital.CEA was used in 93 lesions(84 cases).Among them,73 lesions(64 cases) were performed under shunting.CEA combined with thrombectomy of CA was carried out in 13 cases due to complete occlusion. Results For 13 cases with complete occlusion of CA,complete recanalization, partial recanalization and no improvement were reached in 10,2 and 1 case, respectively. One case died of cerebral haemorrhage at 5-hour of post-operation,and another one happened tracheospasm during extubation and the course was too long to result in vegetative state. No cerebral ischemia was found for CEA with or without shunting except unilateral numbness of upper limb in 1 case.During the follow-up,20% of restenosis was observed in 1 case. Conclusion CEA is a safe means to prevent cerebral infarction, and CEA should be performed under shunting.
