Abstract:The internal flow characteristics in a pipe bend were analyzed using a large-eddy simulation combined with the characteristic-based spliting scheme to investigate the effect of inflow angle on the flow in a circular cross-section pipe with a 90° bend, a dimensionless curvature-radius of 1.0, inflow angles from - 16° to 16° and a Reynolds number of 6 × 104. The effect of the inflow angle on secondary flow, separation, primary flow deviation, and bend losses were analyzed. The results show that negative inflow angles attenuate the secondary flow intensity, while increasing the primary flow deviation intensity and flow separation. The primary flow deviation more strongly affects the bend losses than the secondary flow. The bend losses are minimized with a positive inflow angle.
