Abstract:In China, the rapid development greatly greatly promotes the national economic power and living standard but also inevitably brings a series of environmental problems. In order to resolve these problems fundamentally, Chinese scientists have been undertaking research in the area of green chemical engineering (GCE) for many years and achieved great progresses. In this paper, we reviewed the research progresses related to GCE in China and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese resources characteristics and environmental requirements, i.e. ionic liquids and their applications, biomass utilization and bio-based materials/products, green solvent-mediated extraction technologies, and cold plas-mas for coal conversion. Afterwards, the perspectives and development tendencies of GCE were proposed, and the challenges which will be faced while developing available industrial technologies in China were mentioned.

Abstract:Environmental issues are increasingly of global concern. The trend of sustainable development requires chemistry to be "clean" or "green." In the 1990s, therefore, the concept of "Green Chemistry" was proposed, together with the "Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry." These twelve principles encompassed the premise of green chemistry but mainly focused on the aspects of synthetic chemistry. For green chemistry in the analytical laboratory, the concept of Green Analytical Chemistry was subsequently proposed, but it has not yet become a popular field of chemistry. Apparently, green analytical chemistry is a key part of green chemistry and an important trend in analytical chemistry in modern society. It is an emerging area of increasing importance both in green chemistry and in analytical chemistry. In this report, green analytical chemistry is systematically discussed and then defined with seven principles. Firstly, the aspects of green analytical chemistry are discussed in detail with regard to the whole analytical process; i.e., from sample collection, sample preparation, to sample analysis, and some other related issues such as process analysis. Secondly, some naturally green or possibly green analytical techniques are discussed. Presently, spectroscopic methods dominate the area of green analytical chemistry. The purpose of this report is to arouse more attention to green analytical chemistry to serve the sustainable development of the modern society.

Abstract:At present,China’s chemical industry is facing big challenges of resources and environment,while green chemical technologies could provide ways to promote the sustainable development of China’s chemical industry. This article proposed that the degree of green chemical technologies can be measured by atomic economy,energy consumption and low carbon of full life cycle. Then,it summarizes three basic ways to realize green chemistry,including low carbonization, clean processes and energy conservation. Moreover,this article reviews the development and application of green chemical technologies in China,involving in the chemical transformation of renewable biomass resources,green chemical process,high efficient reactor or separation equipment, green solvents,homogeneous catalysis used at low reaction temperature,green hydrogen production and utilization of carbon dioxide,etc. Finally,outlook is given,and it is suggested that the green carbon science concept should always be committed,and special attentions could be paid on direct conversion technologies,energy management in the input and intermediate process,and output CO2 intensive transformation,etc.

Green Processing and Synthesis

Abstract:The effort that China is making for cleaner production of chemicals especially based on technology innovations of green processing and synthesizing methods, is reviewed. An example is the rapidly expanding chlor-alkali industry in China, which manufactures a large volume of products of caustic soda, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), etc. With a distinct difference from conventional technologies, a series of novel processes are under investigation, both in academic research and in industrial demonstrations, such as clean coal conversion to acetylene using thermal plasma, mercury free catalysis to synthesize vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and a plasma-assisted gas-solid contacting process to make chlorinated PVC (CPVC). All efforts are directed to improving the process efficiency, saving the materials and energy cost, and accordingly to reducing the emission/disposal of waste gases, liquids and solid residues. We try to address the significance of technology innovations to drive the industry reformation, in order to fully update the outdated processes with heavy pollution and energy consumption, to the state of the art green process and synthesis techniques.

Abstract:With the advocation of green analytical chemistry (GAC), the development of eco- and operator friendly analytical practices is highly concerned. This could be more noteworthy for the radioanalytical chemistry as hazardous radioactivity present during the analytical procedures. For the first time, herein we critically reviewed the practices and progresses of radioanalytical methodologies for typical nuclides from the perspective of GAC. Different stages of the general radioanalytical procedures were considered. On this basis, practices and progresses of the methodologies were dialectically discussed from two aspects, viz., the analytical performances and the analytical greenness. In the end, future trends of radioanalytical methodologies for different nuclides were proposed. Although in many cases the implementation of GAC might deteriorate the analytical performances, with the aid of multi-nuclide separation procedure as well as automatic techniques, it is promising to improve the analytical greenness meanwhile satisfy the analytical requirements for specific application purposes.

Abstract:A historical retrospect of major achievements in the research of soil chemistry provides theoretical bases of some basic disciplines for sustainable development of soil science in the 21st century.Based on a brief retrospect of the development of the soil chemistry of China,a summary is presented on characteristics,status quo and advancement of soil the chemistry science in China in the past few decades,and a general prospect of this academic field is put on the table as well.After comprehensive analysis,it is concluded that macroscopic regulation of soil should be based on knowledge of soil microscopic properties.Recent development of the in-site observation of soil microscopic properties based on the technology of microscopic spectrum in molecular level,and the giant step forward in the knowledge are the basis of the rapid development in the field of soil chemistry in China in past few years.Intercrossing and mutual infiltration between disciplines,such as modern pedology,environmental science,ecology,biogeochemistry,chemistry,biology,and geologic medicine has further developed and expanded the academic field of traditional soil chemistry,and stimulated formation and development of new sub-disciplines of soil chemistry.It is the major direction of the soil chemistry of China in future development to establish a China-specific theoretic and practical system of variable charge soil chemistry and consummate modern pedological theory from the angle of agricultural production and changes in human habitat and environment.

Abstract:Since the end of 20th century, chromatographic science has experienced a rapid development in China. Along with the current developments of life science, material science, energy science and environmental science, especially the rise of researches in functional genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, glycomics etc, chromatography has got more close attention and extensive applications. During this period, the chromatography researchers of China have made significant achievements, published a considerable number of papers in the world-class academic journals and made some impacts on the international research. This review summarizes some of the representative studies of chromatographic research in China about the basic theories of chromatography, new separation and analytical methods and techniques, new columns and enrichment materials, new equipments and applications of chromatographic analysis in the last decade.

Abstract:As a result of the greater consciousness within the analytical community on the impact of chemicals on human health and environment, green issues are increasingly taken into account when choosing an established analytical method or developing a new one. Apart from typical analytical characteristics (e.g., sensitivity, limit of detection, repeatability, etc.), other features such as the amount of sample/reagents, operation time, use of energy-effective apparatus, waste production, etc. should be highlighted in order to meet the principles of Green Chemistry. Although conventional approaches for trace element analysis by atomic spectrometry usually involve well-established sample pre-treatments based on ‘wet chemistry’, and high consumption of gases, reagents, etc. is inherent to many techniques in this group, there are still many avenues where green issues can be implemented. For greening atomic spectrometry, green chemistry principles should be applied to every step of the analytical process, i.e., from sampling and sample pre-treatment to data processing. In this review, main pathways for greening atomic spectrometry such as downsizing of instrumentation, use of portable instruments, solid sampling, application of clean energies (ultrasound, microwaves, etc.) for sample pre-treatment, development of on-site, on-line and at-line approaches vs. typical off-line methods, application of modern extraction techniques (e.g., solid- and liquid-phase microextraction), green solvents and derivatization agents and use of chemometric tools for method optimization, signal processing, etc. are discussed in a critical way.

Organic Chemicals from Bioprocesses in China.

Abstract:Over the last 20 years, China has successfully established a modern biotechnology industry from almost nothing. Presently, China is a major producer of a vast array of products involving bioprocesses, for some China is even the world's top producer. The ever-increasing list of products includes organic acids, amino acids, antibiotics, solvents, chiral chemicals, biopesticides, and biopolymers. Herein, the research and development of bioprocesses in China will be reviewed briefly. We will concentrate on three categories of products: small molecules produced via fermentation, biopolymers produced via fermentation and small chemicals produced by enzyme-catalyzed reactions. In comparison with the traditional chemical process, in which, nonrenewable mineral resources are generally used, products in the first and second categories noted above can use renewable bioresources as raw materials. The bioprocesses are generally energy saving and environmentally benign. For products developed via the third category, although the raw materials still need to be obtained from mineral resources, the biocatalysts are more effective with higher selectivity and productivity, and the bioprocesses occur under ambient temperature and pressure, therefore, these are "green processes." Most of the products such as citric acid, xanthan and acrylamide etc., discussed in this paper have been in large-scale commercial production in China. Also introduced herein are three scientists, Prof. Shen Yinchu, Prof. Ouyang Pingkai and Prof. Chen Guoqiang, and six enterprises, Anhui Fengyuan Biochemical Co. Ltd., Shandong Hiland Biotechnology Co. Ltd., Shandong Fufeng Fermentation Co. Ltd., Shandong Bausch & Lomb-Freda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., Zhejiang Hangzhou Xinfu Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., and Changzhou Changmao Biochemical Engineering Co. Ltd.; they have all contributed a great deal to research and development in the commercialization of bioprocesses.

Abstract:Abstract Background The substantially operated analytical instruments dealing in the area of analytical chemistry are traditional methods like high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC). Since they use solvents, produce trash, and require energy, these methods seriously compromise the natural milieu. The excessive consumption of an enormous number of organic solvents, along with the trash created from it, can contaminate the environment. As a result, researchers are now creating novel Green Analytical Chemistry approaches to address these environmental problems and create an ecologically preferable replacement. Main body of the abstract Ecologically preferable replacement can be accomplished by using a green solvent, such as ethanol or water, in place of harmful solvents. Additionally, the need for solvent can be decreased by omitting the sample preparation stage wherever possible or by utilising alternate green extraction methods. Adoption of compact methods like ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) may also result in a decrease in the amount of energy used and trash produced during analysis. Short conclusion This review features information on using sustainable practises in analytical chemistry as well as details on using green solvents and sample preparation methods such as Solid Phase Extraction (SPE), Qucheers. It also provides information related of application of green analytical techniques such UHPLC, High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC).

Abstract:Green chemistry designed for the environment has arisen as a result of the concern for the chemical industry that post a risk to the environment. Green chemistry is the design of chemical products and process that reduce or eliminate the use and genera-tion of hazardous substances and tries to prevent the pollution from beginning. This article reviewed the recent research and devel-opment of Green chemistry including green feedstock, solvents, catalysis, regents, product and synthetic methodology. Facing serious challenge to ecological environmental sustainability such as resource depletion, global climate change and toxics generation and dispersion, green chemistry is engaged in facing these challenges by addressing the intrinsic nature of materials and energy to make them more sustainable. Green chemistry fulfills a fundamental role that is essential to the critical pathway toward sustainability, through appropriate design of the structure and its associated properties at molecular level.

Advances in Sample Preparation

Abstract:In recent years, food quality and safety have gained increasing attention. However, due to the complexity of food composition, accurate classical extraction techniques require using toxic organic solvents. The development of green extraction techniques has come to the fore to repress this drawback. In this review, the recent novel methodologies for extracting pollutants from food samples that fulfill the principles of green chemistry were summarized. The use of sorbent-based techniques, such as solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and stir-bar sorbent extraction (SBSE), and advanced techniques such as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), for improving and accelerating extraction efficiency and reducing solvent consumption are highlighted. Lastly, future perspectives on the implementation of these eco-friendly methodologies are described along with the technological advancements required.

The aim of this review is to give a brief account of current developments in electrochemistry achieved by Chinese scholars in recent years. Limitation of space for the review makes it impossible to include all topics of interest, especially those of technology. The main area reviewed are: in situ spectroelectrochemical techniques; interfacial electrochemistry; new electrochemical systems and photoelectrochemistry.
