Abstract:The Ce3+ and Tb3+ co-doped glasses and glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared by melt-quenching and subsequent heat treating and their luminescence properties were described. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals in glass ceramics was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The XRD patterns and photoluminescence spectra revealed that the Ce3+ ions and Tb3+ ions have been incorporated into SrF2 nanocrystals. The decay time of excited states has been used to reveal the energy transfer mechanism between Ce3+ and Tb3+. The emission intensity of Tb3+ ions in the glass ceramics was much stronger than that in the precursor glass, which could be ascribed to the more efficient energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in the glass ceramics due to the enrichment of Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions and the shortening of the distance between Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions in the precipitated SrF2 nanocrystals. The glasses and glass ceramics could emit bright green light by adjusting concentration ratio of Ce3+ to Tb3+ and heat treatment temperature.

Abstract:In the present work, Ce3+/Tb3+ co-doped 60P2O5-30BaO-10B2O3 phosphate glasses are prepared and their luminescence properties are presented. Under excitation at 303nm, the Ce3+ ions singly doped sample show a novel red emission besides the UV one. The co-doped samples show enhanced Tb3+ ions emission with the increasing of Tb3+ ions concentration at the cost of Ce3+ emission. The mechanism of this luminescent behavior is discussed with respect to the relevant energy transfer process.

Abstract:In this work, we systematically study spectroscopic properties of Tb3+/Dy3+ co‐doped phosphate glasses in the visible spectral region and explore the sensitization role of Dy3+ in the enhancement of visible fluorescence of Tb3+ ions. Judd–Ofelt parameters Ω2 and Ω4/Ω6 of the phosphate glass as host for Tb3+ are calculated as 21.60 × 10–20 cm2 and 0.73 respectively based on the measured spectral absorption. Multiple energy transfer routes from Dy3+ to Tb3+ and their efficiencies are characterized and the enhanced fluorescence properties of Tb3+ are investigated, including the emission spectral strength and the spontaneous emission lifetime as functions of Dy3+ doping concentration. The efficient non‐radiative energy transfer processes between Dy3+ and Tb3+ allow a moderate concentration level of Tb3+ to achieve favorably stronger spectral absorption at blue and ultraviolet wavelengths but almost negligible up‐conversion. Tb3+/Dy3+ co‐doped phosphate glass shows promising potential for phosphors and lasing operation at visible wavelengths.

Abstract:The ultraviolet to near-infrared spectral modification in Ce3+ and Yb3+ codoped phosphate glasses was realized through the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Yb3+. The absorption spectra, fluorescence excitation and emission spectra, luminescence decay curves, and time-resolved emission spectra were measured and analyzed. The energy transfer efficiency and concentration quenching efficiency were calculated based on the decay curves of Ce3+ 340nm emission and Yb3+ 976nm emission. The calculated and experimental NIR emission intensities on the Yb3+ concentrations were compared and discussed.

Abstract:Rare earth ternary chelates Ln(TFA)3(TPPO)2 (Ln=Eu, Tb and Eu/Tb) were synthesized in gel glasses via in situ technique. Pure Ln(TFA)3(TPPO)2 chelates were also synthesized for a comparative study. Photoluminescence properties of the in situ chelates in gel glasses and the pure chelates were studied. In order to investigate the energy transfer mechanism from Tb3+ ions to Eu3+ ions in Eu/Tb(TFA)3(TPPO)2 chelates, photoluminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves have been measured at the temperature range from 10K to 293K. It is found that the energy transfer rate constants calculated from the fluorescence lifetimes do not vary with temperature, which suggests that Dexter mechanism is responsible for the energy transfer from Tb3+ ions to Eu3+ ions in both pure and in situ Eu/Tb ternary chelate.

Abstract:Tb3+–Mn2+‐codoped zinc–strontium–phosphate glasses are prepared by the conventional melt‐quenching method, and their photoluminescence spectroscopy is investigated as a function of the Mn2+ concentration. It is observed that the excitation band at 350 nm due to Tb3+ overlaps that of Mn2+ ions, thus suitable for efficiently activating Tb3+–Mn2+‐codoped glasses. The emission spectra of codoped glasses simultaneously show the blue (486 nm), green (541 and 582 nm), and red (617 nm) emissions. The 590 nm broad emissions of Mn2+ ions have been enhanced with the doping of Tb3+ ions, while the Tb3+ emissions have decreased with the increasing concentration of Mn2+. Decay curves of Tb3+ ions with the different concentrations of Mn2+ ions are also studied. The possible energy transfer process from Tb3+ to Mn2+ ions is proposed and the relevant mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:We report on effect of Ce3+ co-doping on the downconversion luminescence in Tb3+-Yb3+ co-doped borate glasses. The luminescence properties of glasses singly doped and co-doped with Ce3+, Tb3+ and Yb3+ have been investigated. After co-doping with Ce3+ in the Tb3+-Yb3+ doped glasses, the near-infrared energy transfer involving the F-2(5)/(2) -> F-2(7/2) emission of Yb3+ (about 960-1040 nm) is achieved, along with eight times stronger luminescence of Tb3+: D-5(4) -> F-7(3-5) transition. The possible mechanism of the downconversion energy transfer phenomenon was discussed. The enhancement of visible and near-infrared luminescence can improve the photovoltaic energy conversion efficiency of solar cells. (C) 2010 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Samples of CaAl4O7 doped with Tb3+, Ce3+, and Tb3+ and Ce3+, respectively are prepared by sintering. Microstructures are analyzed by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscope experiments. The samples show single monoclinic phase. The blue Ce3+ emission at 440nm is efficiently quenched in the sample of CaAl4O7:Tb3+, Ce3+, in which the dominant emission is in the green at 545nm, originating from the transition of 5D4 to 7F5. Excitation spectrum of the CaAl4O7:Tb3+, Ce3+, monitoring at 545nm of the green emission, consists of both contributions from Ce3+ and Tb3+. 95% of total energy of Tb3+ green emission is transferred from Ce3+.

Abstract:In this paper, we report optical properties and energy transfer behavior between Tb and Mn in zinc strontium phosphate glasses. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectra indicate a stronger hyperfine interaction of Mn2+-Mn2+ pairs with higher MnO concentrations. The co-existence of Tb3+ and Mn2+ ions in glasses is clearly evident in the transmittance spectra. Emission spectra show an obvious energy transfer from Tb3+ to Mn2+ ions in glasses. Based on Dexter's energy transfer formula and Reisfeld's approximation, the energy transfer mechanism was postulated to proceed via a dipolar-quadrupole interaction. The energy transfer carries out with resonant and cross-relaxation transfer modes with the understanding of Tb3+ and Mn2+ energy level diagrams. The decreasing in mean-duration time (tau(mean)) of Tb3+ ions obtained from the decay curves make a further evidence of energy transfer from Tb3+ to Mn2+ ions in glasses. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Thermal stabilities, absorption spectra, static and transient luminescence spectra, quantum efficiencies were measured and analyzed for the phosphate glasses doped with Tb3+. No fluorescence quenching was observed even when Tb3+ concentration reached 15mol%. The external quantum efficiency of phosphate glass containing 10mol%Tb3+ was measured to be 78%, which is the highest up to date compared with other Tb3+-doped materials reported in previous literatures. The large value of ΔT (Tx–Tg) of the glasses was about 340°C, which guarantees the thermal stability of the glasses against crystallization during the fiber drawing process, and Tb3+-doped phosphate glass fibers have been successfully drawn.

Abstract:A novel color tunable phosphor was developed by a high-temperature solid-state reaction route with apatite-type Ca8NaGd(PO4)6F2 (CNGF) as matrix for the doping with Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions. The crystal structures were studied by XRD and Rietveld refinement, which clarified the structural parameters and the occupation of doped ions in crystal lattice. The luminescent intensity of Tb3+ ions was significantly improved by the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. According to the luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves of CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+, a possible energy transfer mechanism was proposed. Fluorescent paper was prepared by binding the CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphor particles with bacterial cellulose, and the morphology and luminescence properties of the paper were investigated. These results demonstrate that the obtained CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ is a promising green phosphor candidate for solid-state lighting and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:In this study strontium phosphate glasses co-doped with Dy3+ and Pr3+ ions are prepared and their photoluminescence properties investigated. The Dy3+ emission decay curves are used to discuss the energy transfer (ET) process between Dy3+ and Pr3+, and the relevant ET mechanism is proposed. The calculated ET efficiency is up to 53% for the glasses studied.

Abstract:A group of of heavy germanate glasses containing BaO and/or Gd2O3, La2O3, SnO and doped with the scintillating rare earth Tb3+ are presented. Photoluminescence measurements are made on these glasses. The intensity of emission peaks is found proportional to the contents of Tb3+ dopants as well as of Gd3+: the former indicates that no obvious concentration quenching effect is visualized within the limits of present Tb3+ dopant while the latter is related to the enhanced energy transfer process from Gd3+ to Tb3+ centers.

Abstract:A series of chalcohalide glasses based on the composition 0.9 (Ge25 Ga5 S70)-0.1CsI doped with the different Tm3+ / Dy3+ ions ratio were synthesized by melt-quenching technique. The absorption spectra, and mid-infrared fluorescence of different glass samples under 800 nm laser excitation were measured. The results prove that, Tm3+ is an efficient sensitizer, which can enhance the Dy3+ : 2.9 microm fluorescence intensity significantly. A decrease in the intensity of 1.8 microm fluorescence and lifetimes of the Tm3+ : (3)F4 level occurred with increasing the concentration of Dy3+ ions from 0 to 1 Wt% where Tm3+ concentration was fixed to 0.5 Wt%. Also a wide spectral overlap between Tm+ : 1.8 microm emission and the absorption of Dy3+ : 6 H(15/2) --> (6)H(11/2) showed that the effective energy transfer between the two rare-earth ions was mainly attributed to the resonance energy from Tm3+: (3)F4 to Dy(3)+ : (6)H(11/2) level.

Abstract:Luminescent glass has drawn widespread interest due to its exceptional properties and has been widely used in solid-state-lighting fields. Herein, a series of Q0, Q1 and Q2 group-containing Dy3+/Tm3+-codoped phosphate glasses with monotonically increasing density and glass stability were prepared. The glasses that emerged from this work displayed eight distinct absorption peaks in their absorption spectra, and the energy transfer from Dy3+ to Tm3+ manifested with the increase of Tm3+ contents under the excitation of 351 nm light. The temperature-dependent emission spectra demonstrated that the glass was thermally stable, and the fluorescence curves demonstrated that the energy transfer mechanism was the electric dipole-dipole interaction. Tuning the sensitizer and activator contents, white-light emission with suitable chromaticity coordinates and CCTs can be obtained. The findings indicated the potential prospects of this glass in lighting applications.

Abstract:To obtain a deeper understand of the energy transfer mechanism between Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions in the aluminum garnet hosts, (Ce, Tb, Gd)3Ga2Al3O12 (GGAG:Ce, Tb) single crystals grown by the optical floating zone (OFZ) method were investigated systematically in a wide range of Tb3+ doping concentration (1–66 at.%). Among those, crystal with 7 at.% Tb reached a single garnet phase while the crystals with other Tb3+ concentrations are mixed phases of garnet and perovskite. Obvious Ce and Ga loss can be observed by an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS) technology. The absorption bands belonging to both Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions can be observed in all crystals. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra show the presence of an efficient energy transfer from the Tb3+ to Ce3+ and the gradually quenching effect with increasing of Tb3+ concentration. GGAG: 1% Ce3+, 7% Tb3+ crystal was found to possess the highest PL intensity under excitation of 450 nm. The maximum light yield (LY) reaches 18,941 pho/MeV. The improved luminescent and scintillation characteristics indicate that the cation engineering of Tb3+ can optimize the photoconversion performance of GGAG:Ce.
