Abstract:The chemical pesticides have played important roles in controlling pests,reducing the hazards and ensuring food security,while long-term irrational use of chemicals resulted in many disadvantages such as 3R problem (Resistance,Residue and Resurgence).This paper reviewed the research and application technologies of ‘Green Plant Protection’ on pest management in paddy fields in China based on reducing the initial population size of rice insect pests,decreasing population growth rate of rice insect pests,increasing environmental resistance to insect pests in rice-based ecosystem,application of biological control agents and chemical control for emergency.A suitable green control technology system should be set up in different places by selection of different technologies based on local conditions,climatic conditions and characteristics of rice pests.Then,it is encouraged to promote the application of the suitable green control technology system with demonstration area construction and multiform,multi-level training to cater to the aim of reduction in chemical insecticide use and damage by rice insect pests.

Abstract:Chemical pesticides play crucial roles in the management of crop diseases and pests. However, excessive and irrational use of pesticides has become a major concern and obstacle to sustainable agriculture. As a result, the quality and security of agricultural products are reduced, and the ecological and environmental integrities are threatened. Recently, environment-friendly pest management measures have been introduced and adopted to manage rice insect pests and reduce the use of insecticides. This paper reviewed the advancements in development and application of non-chemicaltechnologies for insect pest management during rice production in China.

Abstract:Rice blast has an important economic impact during the past many years,causing significant yield losses in the northeastern rice growing region,where japonica cultivars have been widely planted.We have surveyed the predominant population and race changing of Magnaporthe oryzae,and the resistance of rice cultivars during the last 30 years.Moreover,the utilization values of the identified resistance genes,and the key research aspects in the future were also discussed.These results will supply some suggestion for the further research about effectively controlling rice blast in this region.

Abstract:Rice blast is a fungal disease that is known to severely affect rice production worldwide. It is caused by Magnaporthe oryzae (M. oryzae). One of the most economical and effective methods to control this disease involves breeding and cultivate of resistant rice varieties. In the recent years, remarkable progress has been made in this field and significant knowledge has been attained regarding rice blast resistance genes. The present study provides an overview of the studies that focused on mapping, cloning, and functional assessment of rice blast resistance genes and their application in molecular breeding. Additionally, the present review discusses the current limitations and future prospects for developing improved rice blast resistant varieties. Altogether, the present study provides valuable and comprehensive insights into rice blast resistance breeding.

Abstract:Rice blast is a highly destructive crop disease that requires the interplay of three essential factors: the virulent blast fungus, the susceptible rice plant, and favorable environmental conditions. Although previous studies have focused mainly on the pathogen and rice, recent research has shed light on the molecular mechanisms by which the blast fungus and environmental conditions regulate host resistance and contribute to blast disease outbreaks. This review summarizes significant achievements in understanding the sophisticated modulation of blast resistance by Magnaporthe oryzae effectors and the dual regulatory mechanisms by which environmental conditions influence rice resistance and virulence of the blast fungus. Furthermore, it emphasizes potential strategies for developing blast-resistant rice varieties to effectively control blast disease.

Abstract:Rice is one of the staple foods for the majority of the global population that depends directly or indirectly on it. The yield of this important crop is constantly challenged by various biotic stresses. Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae (M. oryzae), is a devastating rice disease causing severe yield losses annually and threatening rice production globally. The development of a resistant variety is one of the most effective and economical approaches to control rice blast. Researchers in the past few decades have witnessed the characterization of several qualitative resistance (R) and quantitative resistance (qR) genes to blast disease as well as several avirulence (Avr) genes from the pathogen. These provide great help for either breeders to develop a resistant variety or pathologists to monitor the dynamics of pathogenic isolates, and ultimately to control the disease. Here, we summarize the current status of the isolation of R, qR and Avr genes in the rice-M. oryzae interaction system, and review the progresses and problems of these genes utilized in practice for reducing rice blast disease. Research perspectives towards better managing blast disease by developing a broad-spectrum and durable blast resistance variety and new fungicides are also discussed.

Abstract:Since the 1st green revolution,pest problems were getting more serious as significant reduction of natural regulation function in rice ecosystem resulted from susceptible high yielding varieties and heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in large areas.To reduce pest problems,technology and strategies for pest management have been going through four phases,chemical control,primary integrated pest control,pest management and ecological engineering.However,new problems including serious yield losses caused by small insects,simultaneous outbreaks of multiple diseases,succession of weeds and genetic resistant problems although heavy yield losses have been retrieved.In order to accomplish the sustainable intensified agriculture,plant protection workers should work together with scientists in other disciplines to enhance natural regulating functions in rice ecosystems,coordinated innovation to develop new technology and management system for implementing green plant protection strategies from the view of healthy rice ecosystems.
A preliminary study on the effect of agro-meteorological factors on molecular mechanism of rice blast occurrence

Abstract:Rice is an important food crop in China. Rice blast, a disease caused by ascomycetes (Magnaporthe oryzae), is one of most limiting factors of rice production in the country, which results in huge economic losses to the rice production each year. With the completion of whole genome sequencing of rice and M. oryzae, the interaction mechanism of rice and M. oryzae has become much clearer. Resistance to rice blast fungus can effectively prevent the invasion of pathogenic bacteria through the natural immune system of rice. Also pathogens can cause diseases in susceptible rice varieties by inhibiting innate immune system of rice. Outbreaks of rice blast and popular occur under three necessary conditions — susceptible rice variety, pathogenic bacteria and pathogenic meteorological factors. Thus the meteorological factors for the outbreak and epidemics of rice blast play an important role. Based on research achievements in recent years, this paper summarized the interaction mechanism of rice and M. oryzae from the pointing of pathogenic process of M. oryzae and rice resistance, discussed the effects of temperature, illumination, humidity and other meteorological factors on the pathogenesis of M. oryzae and disease resistance of rice. The paper further explored the molecular mechanism of invasion of rice blast epidemic caused by the factors, expecting to find the best ways for preventing and controlling rice blast. Finally, the paper provided theoretical evidences in support of proper prevention and treatment methods of rice blast.

Abstract:Rice is the staple diet of more than three billion people. Yields must double over the next 40 years if we are to sustain the nutritional needs of the ever-expanding global population. Between 10% and 30% of the annual rice harvest is lost due to infection by the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. Evaluation of genetic and virulence diversity of blast populations with diagnostic markers will aid disease management. We review the M. oryzae species-specific and cultivar-specific avirulence determinants and evaluate efforts towards generating durable and broad-spectrum resistance in single resistant cultivars or mixtures. We consider modern usage of fungicides and plant defence activators, assess the usefulness of biological control and categorize current approaches towards blast-tolerant genetically modified rice.

Abstract:Rice blast, caused by the fungus Pyricularia oryzae L., is considered one of the main threats to world rice production. The development of resistant cultivars is one of the best and sustainable control alternatives. Plant breeding efforts have been accelerated by genetic mapping (linkage and associative) and marker assisted selection. On the other hand, genomic editing techniques, such as meganucleases (MNs), Zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs), Transcription Activator-like Effector Nucleases (TALENs) and Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindrome Repeats/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9), can be used to promote specific genetic modifications. Likewise, transgenics can also be used to manipulate specific genes. In this sense, this work aims to characterize rice blast and elucidate available biotechnological alternatives to accelerate the development of improved rice cultivars resistant to rice blast.

Abstract:Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the most devasting diseases in rice production. Due to the high level of specificity of most blast resistance genes and the high frequency of variation in M. gri-sea, loss of resistance in most of the resistant cultivars is one of the most challenges in rice breeding and pro-duction. Utilization of broad-spectrum resistance is a promising strategy to control the blast disease in rice field. In this review, we summarized the characteristic, molecular mechanism, breeding utilization of the identified R genes that regulate rice broad-spectrum resistance against M. oryzae and also discussed the future challenges in the elucidation of the molecular mechanism of broad-spectrum resistance in rice.
The Control of Rice Blast Disease by the Novel Biofungicide Formulations

Abstract:The study aims to develop novel biofungicide formulations against rice blast disease. A total of 300 rhizobacteria strains were isolated from rice field soil and were examined for the inhibition of Magnaporthe oryzae growth in a vitro test. Among them, only six rhizobacteria showed inhibition against M. oryzae. The three strains that showed the highest inhibition were Bacillus subtilis 5, B. cereus 3S5, and Pseudomonas fluorecens 10S2. A rice hull mixture and liquid medium were mixed with the above-mentioned bacterial suspensions into three bacterial formulas and tested separately on the rice cultivar UPLRi-5 after infection by M. oryzae under a controlled condition. The three novel biofungicide formulas significantly inhibited rice blast disease intensity with a mean disease control rate being approximately 31% higher than the control. The formulas proved to be effective and should be considered as promising novel treatments for rice blast disease.

Screening and utilization of antagonistic bacteriae against rice sheath blight

Abstract:Rice seed is one of the most important resources of biocontrol agents.It's necessary for us to understand distribution of the antagonistic bacteria against sheath blight of rice under different culture pat- terns and their characteristics in order to gain satisfied biocontrol agents in Zhejiang Province.A field survey and isolation of the antagonistic bacteria was conducted.It was showed that the isolation frequency of the antagonistic bacteria from rice seeds of direct broadcast-seeding was significantly higher than those from direct row-seeding and transplanting.Thirteen strong antagonistic bacteriae against Rhizoctonia sola- ni were screened in vitro from 1000 bacterial isolates obtained from 3 different culture patterns of rice. Pathogenicity test showed that isolate S270262 produced lesions on rice plant and other 12 strains were non-pathogenicity,which were used for rice seed bacterization against R.solantiv in the screening-house and greenhouse and spraying in paddy field and identified by Biolog.The results showed the 10 strains had growth promoting effect on rice plant and 2 inhibiting the growth.Strain T300363,S300265 and S90132 had better performance in pot and field plot experiments.They were identified by Biolog as Sal- monella subsp.1 G,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas spp.
The Use of Rice Varietal Diversity for Rice Blast Control

Abstract:Field experiments of mixed-(intercropping) and pure-planting (monoculture) of four rice varieties, representing improved hybrid varieties (Shanyou63 and Shanyou22) and high-quality traditional varieties (Huangkenuo and Zigu) from Yunnan Province, were conducted based on their differences in genetic background and agro-economical characteristics. The results demonstrated that the mixed-planting of the hybrid rice and high-quality traditional rice varieties had a significantly greater effect on controlling rice blast disease than the nionoculture of these varieties, particularly the traditional ones. It is evident for the highly susceptible traditional varieties in mixed-planting to achieve disease control, with significant decreases in blast incidences and severity indexes. The blast control efficiency reached up to 83-98% under such planting model. This suggests that an appropriate mixed-planting of rice varieties with diverse genetic background and agro-economical characteristics is an effective approach for rice blast control. In addition, resistance of the traditional rice varieties to lodging was considerably increased in the plots with mixed-planting, compared with the plots with monoculture. The average rate of grain-yield increase ranged from 6.5 to 9.7% in the plots with mixed-planting.

Abstract:Rice blast is one of the most serious diseases in rice production, and precise monitoring and predicting on the occurrence and epidemic condition of rice blast is the basis of effective disease prevention and control. In this paper, present status of rice blast monitoring and prediction was analyzed from three aspects of application bacteria information, meteorological information and rice canopy spectral information. Problems and difficulties concerning with different methods of monitoring and prediction were summarized. Based on the above analysis, the method of establishing disease epidemic risk assessment system applying multi-source information relative with blast occurrence was put forward from the perspective of system research. The study can advance the precision of rice blast monitoring and prediction and also give references to other diseases monitoring and prediction.
