Abstract:A novel method for simultaneously measuring three-dimensional small angles is presented through adopting laser collimation technique and ray combination method. The systemic model for measuring three-dimensional rotation angles of the linear guide track is established based on two pentaprisms, two mirrors and two photoelectric detectors. All measuring parameters are analysed theoretically in detail. The results show that the systemic model is feasible. The resolutions of the angles can reach to 0.07 ″, when the system parameters apply to the values supposed. The whole measuring system is characterized of simple structure and high precision. The analysis results can provide theoretical basis and reference for system design.

Abstract:The portable track detecting instrument facilitates effective inspection of track smoothness. The speed measuring module is an important component of the system. The present way of measuring speeds has serious defects, such as that the positioning mistake is too large. To solve this problem, a new type track-detecting instrument using the Global Positioning System is studied. The paper discusses the hardware and software designs of the new system,and the key technologies of using the GPS, and also experimental analysis. The new system improves the accuracy of failure-point positioning. It helps to find the failure points more quickly and accurately, thus increasing the efficiency of maintenance.

Abstract:Rail corrugation impacts the riding quality and safety of railway systems. The chord-based method is one of the common methods for rail corrugation dynamic measurement. However, during the process of continuous operation, it is hard to ensure that the measuring points on the rail surface can trace the railhead centerline well the whole time. This introduces the position deviations to the system, and leads to the measurement results not reflecting the true rail irregularity state. To solve the problem, an automated system for position monitoring and correction of chord-based measuring points is constructed in this paper. The proposed system comprises the position monitoring subsystem (PMS) and the position correction subsystem (PCS). The PMS monitors the positions of measuring points with given sampling interval, and calculates the position deviations with respect to the railhead centerline. Once the deviation exceeds the preset range, the PCS makes corresponding operations to pull the measuring points back to the effective range. Extensive experiments show that the error of PMS is limited within 0.6 mm, and the PCS can correct the position deviations in a timely manner according to the correction criteria. Furthermore, with 20-cm image sampling interval, our system can run at 6 km/h under our experimental setup, which is higher than that of rail maintenance trains (up to 5 km/h).

Abstract:Track measurement is an importantly basic and preliminary work to ensure high-speed, safe and smooth operation of trains. In the stages of design and construction, the high-speed railway track measurement at least includes the layout and measurement of all control networks, the subgrade deformation monitoring, and the track irregularity measurement. However, there are several problems such as long retest period, high labor cost, and low detection efficiency, which cannot fully meet the needs of large-scale high-speed railway tracks rapid detection in the stages of operation and maintenance. So, a set of track comprehensive measurement methods of high-speed railway based on GNSS/INS multi-sensor are proposed, and the corresponding system is developed. It has been applied to the actual track fine adjustment engineering, and compared with the Amberg track geometry measurement system based on total station coupled with level, and the results show that the proposed system has realized the integration of track subgrade deformation monitoring and track geometry absolute measurement and relative measurement, which fully meets the requirements of the Code for Engineering Survey of High-Speed Railway, and significantly improves the measurement efficiency.

Abstract:Precise track irregularity measuring is a pivotal technique to protect dynamic safety for railway transportation applications, especially those on high-speed railways. Current methods, such as the total station-based automatic inspection systems, commonly have a high cost and are inefficient. To reduce the costs and improve the measuring efficiency, a multi-sensors fusion system consisting of multi-constellation global navigation satellite systems (GNSS)-based precise point positioning, inertial navigation system, odometer, and track gauge is proposed and is further enhanced by using the Rauch–Tung–Striebel smoother. By using this system, one not only obtains high measuring accuracy, but also obtains increased efficiency of track irregularity measuring tens of times than achieved by conventional methods. After the principle investigations, a set of high-speed railway track measuring data containing quad-GNSS (GPS, BDS, GLONASS, and Galileo) observations, laser inertial measurement unit data, odometer measurements, and track gauge data are processed and analyzed to evaluate the capability of the proposed system. The results illustrate that the proposed system, which provided approximately 0.25, 0.59, 0.65, and 0.48 mm measuring accuracy in the super elevation, horizontal, vertical, and gauge components, respectively, can be used for high-accuracy track irregularity measuring.

Abstract:Track irregularities induce potential risks to the safety and stability of railway track systems. This paper proposes a novel methodology to identify vertical and lateral track irregularities. The method involves measuring system-based attitude calculation and a model-based unknown input observer estimator, based on the dynamic responses of distributed multi-sensors on the vehicle and bogie. First, a mechanical model of wheel-rail contacts is built with dynamic methods. The model considers the different directions of motion for a railway vehicle and consists of two bogies and four wheelsets. Based on the multi-sensor acceleration measurement, the vertical and lateral acceleration signals of the vehicle and bogies are integrated into the displacement signal. Then a state-space description of the vehicle suspension model is established for inverse dynamical analysis to extract the input signals. A suitable unknown input observer is constructed to estimate the track irregularities by transforming the state space equations of the vehicle into an augmented system that can monitor the track irregularities in-service. This method provides an opportunity to reduce the costs of the monitoring infrastructure and provide quicker and more reliable information about the status of a track.

Abstract:Rail profile measurement is one of the most critical tasks for track quality inspection to ensure the safe operation of track systems. In modern railway systems, laser triangulation sensors have been widely adopted in onboard measuring units to carry out 2-D rail profile measurement due to their robustness and truly noncontact properties. However, existing solutions limit the degrees of freedom of the laser sensor and thus cannot provide full coverage of the rail profile due to the "shadowing effect" of triangulation sensors. Incomplete profiles limit the performance of wear assessment hence more detailed inspections still rely on contact-based tools operated by humans. These processes are time-consuming and incompatible with the ever-shortening maintenance windows available in modern railway systems. Benefiting from the miniaturization of sensing technology and improving processors, multisensing systems combine the strengths of different sensors. This article presents a new solution for a laser-based multisensing system for noncontact rail profile measurement and wear inspection. The addition of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a camera module allows portable rail profile measurement without "blind spots." Optimized iterative closest point (ICP) registration is then applied to generate a complete representation of the rail profile. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system can provide accurate and efficient rail profile measurement, and could potentially replace conventional contact-based inspection tools.

Abstract:The track line suffers from track irregularity, subgrade settlement, rail surface defects, and gauge distortion. Measuring the track geometry quality plays an important role in rail administrations to safe operation and track maintenance. In order to meet the requirements of track daily inspection, this article describes a comprehensive detection system for the track geometry, which is designed by four cameras, an inclinometer, and an inertial measurement unit. Moreover, the detection system has the characteristics of simple structure, automatic detection, and multiple measurement parameters. First, to measure track alignment and irregularity, a multisensing calibration method is established to fuse visual sensors and inertial sensors. An accelerometer and a Kalman filter are used to eliminate accumulated unrealistic drifts of accelerometer and gyroscope. Second, to measure the rail surface defects and gauge, the model of laser and machine vision is deduced to obtain the coordinate values in a unified coordinate system, and an improved iterative closest point method is developed to improve the matching accuracy. Finally, a series of experiments is carried out to validate the measuring performance. The results indicate that the proposed method can accurately measure the track geometry, with the maximum deviations of track alignment, track irregularity, rail defects, and gauge that are less than 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, and 0.1 mm, respectively. The detection system is not only simple in structure but also has multiple detection parameters, which is especially suitable for track daily maintenance.

Abstract:The accurate assessment of railway irregularities plays a pivotal role in ensuring both operational safety and passenger comfort, especially in the context of high-speed railways. Traditional static methods for monitoring these irregularities, such as absolute measurement trolley systems relying on total stations, have proven to be inefficient. On the other hand, relative measurement systems like the global navigation satellite system/inertial navigation system (GNSS/INS) integrated concept offer high operational efficiency but come with substantial costs associated with navigation-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU) systems. In this research endeavor, we introduce a novel multisensor fusion system centered around a relative inspection trolley. This innovative approach serves to significantly reduce equipment expenditures while simultaneously elevating the accuracy of irregularity detection. The core components of this system comprise real-time kinematic (RTK) GNSS, a cost-effective micro-electric mechanical system (MEMS) IMU, an odometer, and two laser modules. The integration of various advanced techniques, including zero velocity update (ZUPT), Ranch-Tung-Striebel smoother (RTS), nonholonomic constraint (NHC), odometer calibration (OC), and prior knowledge (PK), collectively enhances the efficiency and precision of railway irregularity measurements. The results obtained from extensive testing on railway irregularities demonstrate the remarkable capabilities of the proposed system. It exhibits a measurement precision of approximately 0.2, 1.0, 0.7, 0.5, and 0.5 mm for rail gauge, cross level, twist, vertical irregularities, and lateral irregularities, respectively. Consequently, our suggested technique stands as a compelling choice for the precise quantification of railway irregularities, offering a compelling solution for the railway industry.

Abstract:In order to ensure the safe operation of subways, it is necessary to detect the metro gauge and track geometry in time. However, the manual detection and the large rail inspection car is inefficient and expensive. Therefore, we have developed a multi-sensor integration detection and analysis device. Sensors, such as a laser scanner, a gauge sensor, an angle sensor, and a single-chip computer, are integrated into a rail inspection trolley, and the functions of gauge detection, gauge analysis, rail gauge calculation, and superelevation calculation are realized. Through the calibration of an odometer and a sensor, the accuracy of the device can meet the requirements of the standard. The device is applied to Changsha Metro Line 3 to detect and analyze the gauge and track geometry state. Finally, the device realizes the functions of the gauge intrusion alarm, automatic input of graphics and gauge intrusion data, automatic identification of sleepers, and automatic collection of track geometry data.

Abstract:Track measurement is extraordinarily fundamental and antecedent for ensuring high smoothness, high stability and high reliability of tracks to guarantee high-speed, safe and smooth running of high-speed trains. It at least includes control survey, route survey, and subgrade survey in the stages of design, construction, operation and maintenance. However conventional track measurement for high-speed railway mainly considered the situation in the stages of design and construction which has several problems including long retest period, high labor cost, and low measurement efficiency. It cannot fully meet the requirements of rapid detection for large-scale high-speed railway tracks in the stages of operation and maintenance, especially in China. To this end, a novel high-speed railway track integrated inspection solution based on global navigation satellite system (GNSS) / inertial navigation system (INS) and multisensor is proposed, and the corresponding track integrated inspection system is developed. It has been applied to the several actual track fine adjustment engineering projects for high-speed railway, and the results show that the proposed system realized the integration of the track subgrade deformation monitoring and the track geometric status absolute measurement and relative measurement for high-speed railway, and it has the lateral deviation accuracy of 2 mm and vertical deviation accuracy of 2 mm for track irregularity measurement in good consistency with the conventional track irregularity inspecting instrument (i.e., Amberg GRP1000) coupled with level at the faster average detection speed of 1 km/h, and the horizontal accuracy of 1 mm and the vertical accuracy of 1.5 mm for track subgrade deformation monitoring in real time, which fully satisfy the specific requirements for the Code for Engineering Survey of High Speed Railway, and significantly improve the detection efficiency while ensuring the measurement accuracy. The main components and process flow of the proposed solution have been systematically introduced in this paper, which can provide a reference to the following research and development of similar track inspection systems and solutions

Abstract:Accurate measurement of the railway track geometry is a task of fundamental importance to ensure the track quality in both the construction phase and the regular maintenance stage. Conventional track geometry measuring trolleys (TGMTs) in combination with classical geodetic surveying apparatus such as total stations alone cannot meet the requirements of measurement accuracy and surveying efficiency at the same time. Accurate and fast track geometry surveying applications call for an innovative surveying method that can measure all or most of the track geometric parameters in short time without interrupting the railway traffic. We provide a novel solution to this problem by integrating an inertial navigation system (INS) with a geodetic surveying apparatus, and design a modular TGMT system based on aided INS, which can be configured according to different surveying tasks including precise adjustment of slab track, providing tamping measurements, measuring track deformation and irregularities, and determination of the track axis. TGMT based on aided INS can operate in mobile surveying mode to significantly improve the surveying efficiency. Key points in the design of the TGMT's architecture and the data processing concept and workflow are introduced in details, which should benefit subsequent research and provide a reference for the implementation of this kind of TGMT. The surveying performance of proposed TGMT with different configurations is assessed in the track geometry surveying experiments and actual projects.

Abstract:Track maintenance is very important in the public transport management activities and it requires a reliable track state database. As emerging rail transport, the maglev train lacks such a database. Special track inspection car can only work when traffic is stopped. In this way, the rail status collection efficiency is low and the maintenance cost is also increased. Track inspection device can be mounted on operational vehicles to collect large amounts of data through repeated measurements. So track inspection equipment requires good measurement repeatability. Since measurement results of track geometry are not variables, but random functions with respect to distance, the signal correlation coefficient is used to quantify the measurement repeatability; and the effect of train motion on measurement repeatability can be effectively assessed. Taking the vertical deviation measurement of the track as an example, the impact of the train motion (rolling, pitching, lateral vibrating and accelerating/ decelerating) on the measurement repeatability is analyzed in this study. Gyroscopes, inclinometers, lateral accelerometer and longitudinal accelerometer are installed on the instrumented bogie to sense the train motion. These sensor signals are then used to correct the vertical accelerometer, which help to improve the precision of the vertical acceleration signal. Thereby the measurement results won't be affected by train motions, and the measurement repeatability can be improved. Test results show that the measurement repeatability has been improved 7%-43% after the multi-sensor correction technique is utilized.
Non-Interrupting Rail Track Geometry Measurement System Using UAV and LiDAR

Abstract:The safety of train operations is largely dependent on the health of rail tracks, necessitating regular and meticulous inspection and maintenance. A significant part of such inspections involves geometric measurements of the tracks to detect any potential problems. Traditional methods for track geometry measurements, while proven to be accurate, require track closures during inspections, and consume a considerable amount of time as the inspection area grows, causing significant disruptions to regular operations. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a track geometry measurement system (TGMS) that utilizes an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform equipped with a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor. Integrated with a state-of-the-art machine-learning-based computer vision algorithm, and a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm, this platform can conduct rail geometry inspections seamlessly over a larger area without interrupting rail operations. In particular, this semi- or fully automated measurement is found capable of measuring critical rail geometry irregularities in gauge, curvature, and profile with sub-inch accuracy. Cross-level and warp are not measured due to the absence of gravity data. By eliminating operational interruptions, our system offers a more streamlined, cost-effective, and safer solution for inspecting and maintaining rail infrastructure.

Abstract:Track geometry is an important parameter reflecting the safety of bridge railway, which is of great significance for the structure control of railway track. The measurement of track geometry is an indispensable part of structural health monitoring for bridge railway. However, existing methods for track static track geometry measurement are inadequate in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In order to improve the measurement method, this paper proposes a rapid and precise measurement method based on IMU/odometer aided by multiple total stations, which has the advantages of high efficiency, high accuracy, and is less affected by the environment. The proposed method uses a track measurement trolley (TMT) integrated with IMU and an odometer to collect railway track data on the bridge, and multiple total stations are used to synchronously measure the three-dimensional coordinates of the TMT. After coordinate system registration and time synchronisation, the data are then fused using a filtering algorithm to finally obtain the static geometry of the railway track. The proposed method was validated on the NanSha Port Railway Bridge across the Xijiang River in Foshan, China, and the results showed that the proposed method can make a single on-orbit measurement of a 1000 m length of large-span bridge railway track within half an hour, with an accuracy on the order of millimetres. The proposed method has obvious advantages in terms of efficiency and accuracy and is therefore an effective new measurement method with practical significance.

Abstract:Abstract Given the time constraints and demanding precision requirements of railway measurements, traditional measurement methods struggle to meet the inspection needs for the future expansion and renovation of extensive rail networks. This paper presents a railway data collection and processing system developed by using mobile laser scanning technology. To address the issue of error accumulation exceeding predefined limits in the positioning algorithm, we conducted a comprehensive study and utilized smoothing algorithms to correct acceleration and attitude angles. This optimization process not only enhances trajectory data but also improves the accuracy of the point cloud. The results indicate that this system holds significant importance in the realms of railway digital survey and design, as well as digital renovation and related areas.

Abstract:To improve backward situation of recent recording ways of train miles traveled,it is designed that measure system on train miles traveled is based on GSM,CAN bus and GPS technology.Meanwhile,the paper introduces the software and hardware design of the system.The system solves the disadvantage of the current record mode of train travele,and it provides a new method for the measure and management of train miles travele.By many experiments,we know that relative error of measure of train miles traveled is less than 2% when the speed of the train is more than 10km/h.

Abstract:Track alignment inspection is one of the most important methods to ensure safe transportation. Due to the cumulative error of the gyroscope and the accelerometer, speed. In order to solve this problem, a novel inspected method for railway space curve based on multi-sensors fusion of machine vision and inertial measurement is proposed. By using extended Kalman filter, the fusion of the machine vision and inertia information is obtained. Moreover, the inspected performance of the proposed method is investigated by experiment. Compared with the method of conventional inertial measurement, the result demonstrate that the new method has higher accuracy. Furthermore, it is found that the measurement accuracy of the proposed method has improved nearly 10 times.

Abstract:In view of the requirements of modern society parking charge system, as well as limit of the height of the vehicles on the road, a vehicle length measurement system is designed based embedded vehicle.There is a coil that is connected to a digital vehicle detector on the toll station to supervise whether the vehicles arrive.When the detector senses vehicles` arriving, the USB camera is made to take pictures of vehicles, using SOCKET communication send pictures to the PC, and the whole process of acquisition of vehicles` pictures is operated under Linux system.When the PC receives the picture, the judgement of the vehicles can be made through arithmetic of background difference method, the acquisition of the vehicles` modules is made automatically, and the efficiency of the work is improved effectively.The system has been used in the parking lot and the filed of judging the modules of vehicles.
