Diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in lacrimal gland diseases

Abstract:Objective To investigate the value of qualitative diagnosis by contrast- enhanced ultrasound( CEUS) in the diagnosis of lacrimal gland diseases. Methods 15 patients with lacrimal gland diseases underwent ultrasound examinations and 12 patients underwent ultrasound examinations with contrast- enhanced ultrasound afterward. All patients were confirmed by pathology. Results Ultrasound showed low echo masses in 8 plemorphic adenoma cases,heterogeneous,low echo of solid mass with rich colour signals in 3 noid cystic carcinomas of lacrimal gland and medially echoic masses with clear edges in 4 lacrimal gland prolapsed cases. CEUS showed whole homogeneous enhancement in 5 plemorphic adenoma cases( 5 /8,62. 50%) and centrality of heterogeneous enhancement in 3plemorphic adenoma cases( 3 /8,37. 50%),whole homogeneous hyper- enhancement in 3 noid cystic carcinomas of lacrimal gland,iso- enhancement with same wash in and wash- out in 4 lacrimal gland prolapsed cases. Conclusions CEUS can provide microcirculation within the mass and the surrounding tissuemore,combined conventional US and color Doppler flow imaging can complete the qualitative diagnosis of tumour better before operation,and it had higher guiding significance to choose surgical approach and extent of surgical excision.
