Abstract:Another problem of selection has to do with relative length. While poems, essays, short stories, and short plays can easily be represented, what is one to do about novels and long dramas? One must either omit them altogether, referring the reader to translations already in print, or one must limit oneself to a few excerpts. Choosing the latter course, Birch gives samples from three of the great classic novels (one in Volume i) , and from one of T'ang Hsien-tsu's dramas. In the case of the novel Hsi-yu chi, of which there is no complete English translation yet, he juduciously offers an interesting chapter that is not included in Arthur Waley's partial translation. (A large portion of this chapter's English version had already been published in C. T. Hsia's Classic Chinese Novel.) Another choice faced by the anthologist is this: should he attempt to offer a representative cross-section of the entire literature, drawing in part on existing translations, or should he limit himself to outstanding works not previously translated into English? Birch has chosen the first alternative. This is convenient for the reader who wants to use only a single anthology. But students and teachers of courses of Chinese literature in translation are naturally eager to get as many new translations of previously untranslated works as possible, because in any case they will supplement their readings in the anthology with other available books. There are, indeed, a good many fresh translations in Birch's two volumes, but it does seem regrettable that he includes some pieces of which other adequate translations were already in print. For example, Feng Meng-lung's "Jade Kuan-yin," reprinted here from Wang Chichen's Traditional Chinese Tales, is included in The Courtesan's Jewel Box (Peking:' Foreign Languages Press, 1957), where it is translated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang under the title "The Jade Worker"; Ch'ii Yu's "Record of the Land of the Blessed," translated here by James Robert Hightower, can also be read in Wolfgang Bauer's and Herbert Franke's Golden Casket (New York: Harcourt, Brace and World, 1964), under the title "The Spirit Land"; the two stories taken from P'u Sungling's Liao-chai chih-yi in the translation of Ch'u Chai and Winberg Chai were previously available not only in the Chais' Treasury of Chinese Literature but also in Herbert A. Giles' extensive translation, Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio (third revised edition, Shanghai: Kelly and Walsh, 1916, reprinted New York: Dover, 1969; incidentally, the Chais' version seems to be indebted to Giles'); Lu Hsiin's "Benediction," reprinted here from Edgar Snow's Living China, is also available in Yang Hsien-yi's and Gladys Yang's translation in Selected Stories of Lu Hsun (Peking: Foreign Languages Press, i960), where it is titled "The New Year's Sacrifice." As in the first volume, Birch provides short but informative introductions to each section and to the volume as a whole. Annotation is kept to a minimum. There are places where additional notes would have been helpful to the non-specialist reader. In the excerpt from T'ang Hsien-tsu's Peony Pavilion, for instance, the phrase "The green hillside / bleeds with the cuckoo's tears of red azalea" (p. 98) does not make much sense unless one knows the legend of Tu Yu (Emperor Wang) and his metamorphosis into a cuckoo, and the double meaning of tu-chiian "cuckoo"/"azalea." In the same excerpt, the conventional sexual implication of the image "clouds and rain" (pp. 103 and 105) should be pointed out. Despite such minor shortcomings, the completion of the anthology is an eminently successful achievement. In the years to come it is bound to give much pleasure to lovers of Chinese literature, and to increase their numbers.
