Abstract:Nowadays, many researches are focused on the effect of cryoablation or microwave ablation for the treatment of tumors. Cryoablation and microwave ablation are two “minimally invasive” thermal ablation methods due to different principles. The working medium of traditional cryoablation uses argon and helium gas flowing through a cryoprobe. The cryoprobe is percutaneously inserted inside the tumor and switched on a series of freeze-thaw cycles. Water is the main component of the cell, and 75–80% of the total contentof the cell is water. The temperature of the tumor is changed from −196 °C to 37 °C in cycles and sustained a few minutes so the cells in the tumor are killed due to cellular dehydration and protein denaturization. In contrast, the microwave ablation antenna needle is percutaneously inserted inside the tumor and heats it through the interaction of altering the electromagnetic field and polar water molecules. The temperature of the tumor is changed from 37 °C to above 60 °C in several seconds and the cells in the tumor are permanently damaged. The purpose of the article is to verify the feasibility of the hybrid treatment of tumors through cryoablation and microwave ablation. The working medium of cryoablation is liquid nitrogen to achieve −196 °C in the tumor and the electromagnetic wave produces 10 W of power at the frequency of 2450 MHz to achieve 60 °C in the tumor. The modified Pennes bio-heat transfer equations are used to build the mathematical models during the thermal conduction and convection processes. And the mathematical models is simulated by numerical method of Finite Element Method (FEM). The results indicated that in less than 60 s the tumor will be warmed from 37 °C to 60 °C. It will take more than 240 s to cooling down the tumor from 60 °C to −196 °C. It will take less than 7 min in a freeze-thaw procedure. Supposing four freeze-thaw cycles is necessary in the treatment of tumor, the treatment time is decreased to less than 28 min. Moreover, the temperature distribution in the tumor is similar in about 1.5 cm in a radial direction if the diameter of the needle is 3 mm. In our opinion, the hybrid treatment of tumors through cryoablation and microwave ablation may be used to damage the tumor cells efficiently. Therefore, more experiments should be done for specific and irregular tumor to achieve a better result.
