Abstract:Deep-ultraviolet (UV) up-conversion (UC) emissions in the region of 270 similar to 330 nm of Gd3+ under the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode in hexagonal Yb3+-Tm3+-Gd3+ triply doped NaYF4 nanorods synthesized using a hydrothermal method are reported. Spectral analyses indicate that the UV UC emissions originate from highly efficient energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+, then to Gd(3+)ions, and the intensity of the emission as well as the ratios of the emission peaks are strongly dependent on the doping concentrations and pump power. The materials are envisioned to have potential applications in anti-counterfeiting, optical and magnetic dual modal nanoprobes for biomedicine, solution-based scintillator materials and UV compact solid-state lasers.

Some upconverting nanoparticles such as NaYF4 doped with lanthanide ions have been synthesized; however, these nanoparticles are not soluble in water, not biocompatible and do not have functional chemical groups for conjugation of biomolecules, and as a result their bioapplications are very limited unless some surface modifications are performed. Here we report a method for one-pot synthesis of polyethylenimine/NaYF4 nanoparticles doped with lanthanide ions, which are water soluble and biocompatible. The amino groups of polyethylenimine existing on the nanoparticles can be used for attachment of biomolecules. The nanoparticles showed a spherical shape with an average size of about 50 nm. Different lanthanide ions (Yb3+, Er3+ and Tm3+) were doped into the nanoparticles, which showed strong upconversion fluorescence of different colours in aqueous solutions under excitation at 980 nm.

Abstract:Upconversion fluorescent beta - NaYF4 : Yb, Er nanospheres were successfully synthesized and their surfaces were carboxylic acid-functionalized. Based on the fact that gold nanoparticles can quench the upconversion fluorescence of beta - NaYF4 : Yb, Er, a sensitive sandwich-type DNA sensor was developed in this work, and the result demonstrated that the upconversion nanospheres have great potential as luminescent labels for biological applications.

Abstract:Uniform hexagonal NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals (NCs) with bright green upconversion fluorescence were prepared. The nanocrystals were highly hydrophobic and dispersed in cyclohexane forming a transparent colloidal solution due to the use of oleic acid as a capping ligand. Temperature dependence for emission of Er3+ ions in this sample was also studied. The green emission intensity of Er3+ ions had a maximum at 160 K under 980 nm excitation, which was attributed to the thermally activated distribution of electrons and the thermal quenching effect. The transparent colloidal solution is expected to be a good candidate for research in biological imaging or display applications.

Abstract:High-quality NaYF₄:Yb/Er/Gd up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were first synthesized by a solvothermal method using rare earth stearate, sodium fluoride, ethanol, water, and oleic acid as precursors. Doped Gd³⁺ ions can promote the transition of NaYF₄ from cubic to hexagonal phase, shorten the reaction time, and reduce the reaction temperature without reducing the luminescence intensity of NaYF₄:Yb/Er UCNPs. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy were applied to characterize the UCNPs. The nanoparticles exhibited small size and excellent green up-conversion photoluminescence, making them suitable for biological applications. After the surfaces of NaYF₄:Yb/Er/Gd UCNPs were modified with amino groups through the Stöber method, they could be brought close enough to the analytically important protein called R-phycoerythrin (R-PE) bearing multiple carboxyl groups so that energy transfer could occur. A luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) system was developed using NaYF₄:Yb/Er/Gd UCNPs as an energy donor and R-PE as an energy acceptor. As a result, a detection limit of R-PE of 0.5 μg/ml was achieved by the LRET system with a relative standard deviation of 2.0%. Although this approach was first used successfully to detect R-PE, it can also be extended to the detection of other biological molecules.

Abstract:The development of new magnetic fluorescent materials is of great significance for identification and criminal investigation. Since the photosensitive elements used in conventional cameras have exhibited the highest quantum efficiency in the range of 500–700 nm, lanthanide-based upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with main emission peaks at 507–533 nm, 533–568 nm and 637–683 nm are suitable for constructing magnetic fluorescent materials. In this work, we demonstrate a type of magnetic upconversion nanoparticle (MUCNP) of NaGdF4:Yb,Er-Fe3O4 by a ligand-linked method. After optimizing the reaction parameters, the composite particles possess remarkable magnetic properties and upconversion fluorescence intensity and achieve high contrast for latent fingerprint recognition on various substrates. The combination of upconversion luminescence and magnetism contributes to good fingerprint recognition sensitivity and universality.

Abstract:Magnetic-luminescent nanocomposites have obtained a great deal of attention due to their potential applications in magnetic separation of cells, magnetic resonance imaging and luminescence imaging, and so on. Herein, a new and facile two-step synthetic strategy was developed to prepare magnetic Fe3O4 modified single crystalline up-conversion luminescent NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals using Fe3O4 nanoparticles as the seeds. Acting as the "nuclei" in the reaction, the presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles facilitates the formation of up-conversion NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals on their surfaces through heterogeneous nucleation process. The structure and properties of these multifunctional nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photo luminescence (PL) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that the as-prepared multifunctional nanocrystals show dual distinct properties of up-conversion fluorescent and superparamagnetism, which were cubic in shape and very uniform in size with an average size ranging 3040 nm. These unique functionalities could be very attractive for biological systems, and some biological applications such as cell-labelling were also demonstrated.

Abstract:Under 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) excitation, upconversion luminescent (UCL) emission of GdF(3):Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) synthesized by a simple and green hydrothermal process can be tuned from yellow to red by varying the concentration of dopant Li(+) ions. A possible mechanism for enhanced red upconverted radiation is proposed. A layer of silica was coated onto the surface of GdF(3):Yb,Er,Li UCNPs to improve their biocompatibility. The silica-coated GdF(3):Yb,Er,Li UCNPs show great advantages in cell labeling and in vivo optical imaging. Moreover, GdF(3) UCNPs also exhibited a positive contrast effect in T(1)-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These results suggest that the GdF(3) UCNPs could act as dual-modality biolabels for optical imaging and MRI.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanomaterials that convert low energy excitation wavelength to high energy emission have attracted considerable attention due to the advantages of high penetration depth and high resistance to autofluorescence interference capability. This review highlights the literature of the past several years covering recent advances of upconversion nanoprobes for biodetection. We begin by discussions of the key points in fabrication of lanthanide-activated nanoprobes. We further conduct a careful evaluation of various detection applications of upconversion nanoprobes, including temperature, ions, small molecules, DNA, enzyme, virus, and etc. We finish the discussion by assessing current challenges and future prospects of upconversion nanoprobes for fundamental studies and clinical applications.

Abstract:Nanocrystal up-conversion phosphors (UCP), ytterbium- and erbium-codoped lanthanum molybdate (La-2(MoO4)(3):Yb,Er), were prepared for the first time for potential uses in bioassays especially in biochip-based analysis. The La-2(MoO4)(3):Yb,Er nanocrystals, with an average diameter of 50 nm, were prepared via a hydrothermal method. After being annealed at 800 degreesC for 5 h, strong emission of these nanocrystals was observed when excited with a 980 nm infrared (IR) laser. Fluorescent intensity of these nanocrystals is much stronger than that of bulk materials. Down-conversion spectrum of the nanocrystal phosphors was also examined. Two-photon excitation mechanism was proposed for the up-conversion process. Factors affecting the up-conversion fluorescent intensity were also studied. The particle-size-dependent phenomenon was first observed for nanocrystal UCP, and the mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanocrystals which can convert near-infrared lights to visible lights have attracted growing interest because of their great potentials in biomedical engineering. However, it remains a grand challenge to maneuver the intensity ratio between different emission lines and enable tunable upconversion functions. Herein, we present a facile method to integrate NaYF4:Yb, Er upconversion nanocrystals with gold nanocrystals for constructing NaYF4:Yb,Er@SiO2@Au hybrid nanostructures, in which a silica layer on NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals serves as an interface for gold decoration. The green-to-red emissions of the upconversion nanocrystals can be conveniently tuned by altering the amount of surrounding gold nanocrystals. We further demonstrate the capability of utilizing both green and red emission lines for spontaneous signaling in an emitter-quencher-based bioassay by implementing this novel hybrid nanostructure. It is anticipated that the controllability in upconversion fluorescence in this hybrid nanostructure may provide a platform for widely exploring applications in biological imaging, detection, and sensing.

Abstract:To develop fluorescent labels for multicolor imaging, rare-earth-ion-doped ZrO2 nanocrystals were prepared by a complex precursor method. Laser excitation of 976nm induced single fluorescent bands of green and red upconversion (UC) in ZrO2:Er3+ and ZrO2:Er3++Yb3+ nanocrystals, respectively. A suppression ratio (SR) parameter was introduced, defined as the UC intensity ratio of the main band to all the other detected impurity bands, and SR values in the order of 10–100 were experimentally obtained, demonstrating the excellent monochromaticity of the UC labels. Thus, the two-color UC labels obtained are potentially ideal to be used for biological multicolor imaging.

Abstract:Upconversion nanocrystals convert infrared radiation to visible luminescence, and are promising for applications in biodetection 1 , 2 , 3 , bioimaging 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , solar cells 8 , 9 , 10 and three-dimensional display technologies 8 , 9 , 11 . Although the design of suitable nanocrystals has improved the performance of upconversion nanocrystals 10 , 12 , 13 , 14 , their emission brightness is limited by the low doping concentration of activator ions needed to avoid the luminescence quenching that occurs at high concentrations 15 , 16 . Here, we demonstrate that high excitation irradiance can alleviate concentration quenching in upconversion luminescence when combined with higher activator concentration, which can be increased from 0.5 mol% to 8 mol% Tm 3+ in NaYF 4 . This leads to significantly enhanced luminescence signals, by up to a factor of 70. By using such bright nanocrystals, we demonstrate remote tracking of a single nanocrystal with a microstructured optical-fibre dip sensor. This represents a sensitivity improvement of three orders of magnitude over benchmark nanocrystals such as quantum dots 17 .

Abstract:Upconversion (UC) luminescence in monodisperse NaYF4:Yb3+/Tb3+ nanocrystals was observed under diode laser excitation of 970nm, which were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. UC emissions at 380, 413, 436nm and at 488, 542, 584, 620nm arise from transitions 5D3(5G6)→7FJ(J=6, 5, 4) and 5D4→7FJ(J=6, 5, 4, 3) of Tb3+ ions, respectively. UC mechanisms are proposed based on spectral, kinetic, decay time measurements, and pump power dependence analyses. Blue, green and red emissions originate from the same long-lived (milliseconds) upper 5D4 state, which promises the potential applications of these monodisperse Yb3+/Tb3+-codoped NaYF4 nanocrystals in the field of photonics, lasers and biomedicine.

Abstract:Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) is a class of promising probes widely used in protein molecules imaging due to the no photobleaching and non-blinking emission. However, it is still remained challenging to synthesize a type of ultra-small but bright UCNPs. In this paper, a new class of efficient sub-5-nm upconversion nanodots (UCNDs) was elaborately designed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed uniform UCNDs comprise two parts: a 3.5-nm Ln3+-doped ZrO2 core and 0.5-nm NaYF4 shell. The emission intensity of the proposed UCNDs was measured to be more than 10 times brighter than that of the conventional 10-nm NaYF4 UCNPs. Under 300 kW·cm−2 irradiance excitation, the 15 mol% Er3+-doped UCNDs exhibit an 18-fold enhanced intensity and one fifth emission lifetime compared to the 0.5 mol% Er3+-doped ones. Using the biocompatible UCNDs, the aptamer-mediated proteins-targeted imaging was performed and demonstrated high efficiency. These ultra-small, efficient UCNDs would have great potentials in rapid scanning and cellular imaging.

Abstract:The pure and intense orange upconversion luminescence of Eu3+ was efficiently achieved in NaYF4 and NaLuF4 nanocrystals through the upconversion sensitization of doped Yb3+ and Mn2+ ions dimer for the first time. A shell-coating strategy was performed to further enhance the emission intensity. In this work, a novel upconversion mechanism for energy transfer from the Yb3+-Mn2+ dimer to the Eu3+ ion was proposed by analyzing the upconversion luminescence spectra, lifetimes and pumping photons measurements of the obtained nanocrystals in detail. The applications of the nanocrystals for CT imaging and ratiometric pH sensing in physiological pH range were performed. This study also provides a new upconversion spectral region at around 592 nm for applications in multicolor imaging, multiplexed encoding and detection.

Abstract:Fluorescent and magnetic bifunctional NaYF4:Yb/Er/Co nanoparticles were synthesized for the first time via a thermalysis method using oleic acid as capping ligand and octadecene as solvent. The effect of Co2+-codoped on the size evolution, crystal structure, UC emission and magnetic properties of NaYF4:Yb/Er nanoparticles was investigated in detail. XRD, EDS and XPS measurements revealed that Co2+ ions had been successfully incorporated into NaYF4 matrix and existed in the host lattice under the II valence state. The different concentration of Co ions codoping did not change the structure of hexagonal phase. However, the green and red upconversion (UC) emissions intensity of hexagonal NaYF4:Yb/Er were obviously strengthened by tridoping the structure with Co2+/Yb3+/Er3+, and the decay time was obviously prolonged with different quantity of Co2+ ions tridoping. The luminescence enhancement should be attributed to the distortion of the local asymmetry around Er3+ ions. A possible mechanism for the enhancement of upconversion emission was discussed. More importantly, owing to the cobalt ion doping, the NaYF4 nanoparticles also present paramagnetic properties at room temperature and superparamagnetic properties at low temperature. Therefore, it is expected that these nanocrystals can be used as promising dual-modal nanoprobes for optical bioimaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and may have potential applications in bioseparation.
