Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.
Exponential sums over singular binary quartic forms and applications

Abstract:We investigate exponential sums over singular binary quartic forms, proving an explicit formula for the finite field Fourier transform of this set. Our formula shares much in common with analogous formulas proved previously for other vector spaces, but also exhibits a striking new feature: the point counting function $a_p(E) = p + 1 - \#E(\mathbb{F}_p)$ associated to an associated elliptic curve makes a prominent appearance. The proof techniques are also new, involving techniques from elementary algebraic geometry and classical invariant theory. As an application to prime number theory, we demonstrate the existence of `many' 2-Selmer elements for elliptic curves with discriminants that are squarefree and have at most four prime factors.

The distribution of large quadratic character sums and applications

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the distribution of the maximum of character sums over the family of primitive quadratic characters attached to fundamental discriminants $|d|\leq x$. In particular, our work improves results of Montgomery and Vaughan, and gives strong evidence that the Omega result of Bateman and Chowla for quadratic character sums is optimal. We also obtain similar results for real characters with prime discriminants up to $x$, and deduce the interesting consequence that almost all primes with large Legendre symbol sums are congruent to $3$ modulo $4$. Our results are motivated by a recent work of Bober, Goldmakher, Granville and Koukoulopoulos, who proved similar results for the family of non-principal characters modulo a large prime. However, their method does not seem to generalize to other families of Dirichlet characters. Instead, we use a different and more streamlined approach, which relies mainly on the quadratic large sieve. As an application, we consider a question of Montgomery concerning the positivity of sums of Legendre symbols.

Abstract:Let $q=p^n$ be an odd prime power and let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. Let $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$ be the group of all multiplicative characters of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\chi$ be a generator of $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$. In this paper, we investigate arithmetic properties of certain cyclotomic matrices involving nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For example, let $s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_{(q-1)/2}$ be all nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. The distribution of $a$-numbers of hyperelliptic curves in characteristic three

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach to counting the proportion of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with a given $a$-number. In characteristic three this method gives exact probabilities for curves of the form $Y^2=f(X)$ with $f(X)\in\mathbb{F}_q[X]$ monic and cubefree, probabilities that match the data presented by Cais et al. in previous work. These results are sufficient to derive precise estimates (in terms of $q$) for these probabilities when restricting to squarefree $f$. As a consequence, for positive integers $a$ and $g$ we show that the nonempty strata of the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ consisting of those curves with $a$-number $a$ are of codimension $2a-1$. This contrasts with the analogous result for the moduli space of abelian varieties in which the codimensions of the strata are $a(a+1)/2$. Finally, our results allow for an alternative heuristic conjecture to that of Cais et al.; one that matches the available data.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}_g$ be the family of monic odd-degree hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Poonen and Stoll have shown that for every $g \geq 3$, a positive proportion of curves in $\mathcal{F}_g$ have no rational points except the point at infinity. In this note, we prove the analogue for quadratic points: for each $g\geq 4$, a positive proportion of curves in $\mathcal{F}_g$ have no points defined over quadratic extensions except those that arise by pulling back rational points from $\mathbb{P}^1$.

Abstract:We study the regularity of the law of a quadratic form Q ( X , X ), evaluated in a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables, when can be expressed as a sufficiently smooth function of a Gaussian field. This setting encompasses a large class of important and frequently used distributions, such as, among others, Gaussian, Beta, for instance uniform, Gamma distributions, or else any polynomial transform of them. Let us present an emblematic application. Take a sequence of independent and identically distributed centered random variables, with unit variance, following such distribution. Consider also a sequence of quadratic forms, with associated symmetric Hilbert–Schmidt operators . Assume that , , and the spectral radius of tends to 0. Then, converges in a strong sense to the standard Gaussian distribution. Namely, all derivatives of the densities, which are well-defined for n sufficiently large, converge uniformly on to the corresponding derivatives of the standard Gaussian density. While classical methods, from Malliavin calculus or -calculus, generally consist in bounding negative moments of the so-called carré du champ operator , we provide a new paradigm through a second-order criterion involving the eigenvalues of a Hessian-type matrix related to Q ( X ). This Hessian is built by iterating twice a tailor-made gradient, the sharp operator , obtained via a Gaussian representation of the carré du champ. We believe that this method, recently developed by the authors in the current paper and Herry et al. (Ann Probab 52(3):1162–1200, 2024), is of independent interest and could prove useful in other settings.

Abstract:Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field F. For a prime number $\ell$, we consider the field extension of F generated by the $\ell$-powered torsion points of A. According to a conjecture made by Rasmussen and Tamagawa, if we require these fields to be both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $F(\mu_{\ell^{\infty}})$ and unramified away from $\ell$, examples are quite rare. Indeed, it is expected that for a fixed dimension and field of definition, there exists such an abelian variety for only a finite number of primes. We prove a uniform version of the conjecture in the case where the abelian varieties are elliptic curves with complex multiplication. In addition, we provide explicit bounds in cases where the number field has degree less than or equal to 100.

Abstract:For a primitive Dirichlet character $\chi\pmod q$ we let \[M(\chi):= \frac{1}{\sqrt{q}}\max_{1\leq t \leq q} \Big|\sum_{n \leq t} \chi(n) \Big|.\] In this paper, we investigate the distribution of $M(\chi)$, as $\chi$ ranges over primitive cubic characters $\chi\pmod q$ with $(q,3)=1$ and $q\leq Q$. Our first result gives an estimate for the proportion of such characters for which $M(\chi)>V$, in a uniform range of $V$, which is best possible under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. In particular, we show that the distribution of large cubic character sums behaves very differently from those in the family of non-principal characters modulo a large prime, and the family of quadratic characters. We also investigate the location of the number $N_{\chi}$ where the maximum of $|\sum_{n\leq N} \chi(n)|$ is attained, and show the surprising result that for almost all primitive cubic characters $\chi\pmod q$ with $M(\chi)>V$, $N_{\chi}/q$ is very close to a reduced fraction with a large denominator of size $(\log V)^{1/2+o(1)}$. This contradicts the common belief that for an even character $\chi$, $N_{\chi}/q$ is located near a rational of small denominator and gives a striking difference with the case of even characters in the other two families mentioned above, for which $N_{\chi}/q\approx 1/3$ or $2/3$ for almost all even $\chi$. Furthermore, in the case of cubic characters, the works of Granville-Soundararajan, Goldmakher, and Lamzouri-Mangerel show that if $M(\chi)$ is large, then $\chi$ pretends to be $\xi(n)n^{it}$ for some small $t$, where $\xi$ is an odd character of small conductor $m$. We show that for almost all such characters, we have $M(\chi)=m^{-1/2+o(1)}\big|L(1+it, \chi\overline{\xi})\big|.$

Abstract:The equidistribution of roots of quadratic congruences with prime moduli depends crucially upon effective bounds for special Weyl linear forms. Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec discovered strong estimates for these Weyl linear forms when the quadratic polynomial has negative discriminant. Tóth proved analogous but weaker bounds when the quadratic polynomial has positive discriminant. We establish strong estimates for these Weyl linear forms for quadratics of positive discriminants. As an application of our bounds, we derive a quantitative uniform distribution of modular square roots with integer moduli in an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:For a given elliptic curve E in short Weierstrass form, we show that almost all quadratic twists E_D have no integral points, as D ranges over square-free integers ordered by size. Our result is conditional on a weak form of the Hall-Lang conjecture in the case that E has partial 2-torsion. The proof uses a correspondence of Mordell and the reduction theory of binary quartic forms in order to transfer the problem to counting rational points of bounded height on a certain singular cubic surface, together with extensive use of cancellation in character sum estimates, drawn from Heath-Brown's analysis of Selmer group statistics for the congruent number curve.

Abstract:Let $D\neq 1$ be a fixed squarefree integer. For elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$, writing $E_D$ for the quadratic twist by $D$, we consider the question of how often $E(\mathbb{Q})$ and $E_D(\mathbb{Q})$ generate $E(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))$. We bound the proportion of $E/\mathbb{Q}$, ordered by height, for which this is not the case, showing that it is very small for typical $D$.

Abstract:Let $E: y^2=x(x-a^2)(x+b^2)$ be an elliptic curve with full $2$-torsion group, where $a$ and $b$ are coprime integers and $2(a^2+b^2)$ is a square. Assume that the $2$-Selmer group of $E$ has rank two. We characterize all quadratic twists of $E$ with Mordell-Weil rank zero and $2$-primary Shafarevich-Tate groups $(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^2$, under certain conditions. We also obtain a distribution result of these elliptic curves.

Abstract:The distributional analysis of Euclidean algorithms was carried out by Baladi and Vallée. They showed the asymptotic normality of the number of division steps and associated costs in the Euclidean algorithm as a random variable on the set of rational numbers with bounded denominator based on the transfer operator methods. We extend their result to the Euclidean algorithm over appropriate imaginary quadratic fields by studying dynamics of the nearest integer complex continued fraction map, which is piecewise analytic and expanding but not a full branch map. By observing a finite Markov partition with a regular CW-structure, which enables us to associate the transfer operator acting on a direct sum of spaces of $C^1$-functions, we obtain the limit Gaussian distribution as well as residual equidistribution.

Abstract:The classical quadratic Gauss sum can be thought of as an exponential sum attached to a quadratic form on a cyclic group. We introduce an equivariant version of Gauss sum for arbitrary finite quadratic forms, which is an exponential sum twisted by the action of the orthogonal group. We prove that simple arithmetic formulae hold for some basic classes of quadratic forms. In application, such invariant appears in the dimension formula for certain vector-valued modular forms.

Abstract:We compute the quadratic Euler characteristic of the symmetric powers of a smooth, projective curve over any field $k$ that is not of characteristic two, using the Motivic Gauss-Bonnet Theorem of Levine-Raksit. As an application, we show over a field of characteristic zero that the power structure on the Grothendieck-Witt ring introduced by Pajwani-Pál computes the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of symmetric powers for all curves.
