Abstract:The traditional perspective and tools of urban planning hasn't been applicable for the planning problems of current urban stock space,such as the urban organic renewal tasks like the community transformations,pension business,commercial implants and so on,and these tasks become the major part in some urban planning.Based on the survey on the No.60,Damanong, Ziyang Street,Shangcheng District,Hangzhou,and from the perspective of ecological design, residents and other interest groups were organized to participate in the work of community's pro-gressive update.The citizens,enterprises,street-organizations'demands of development were collected through the methods of community planning and design simulation or other forms,then combined with the current situation of architectural environment,the three programs on a basic orientation of progressive update to update the No.60,Damanong,Ziyang Street was put for-ward,which were the plan of market adj ustment,the intervention of pension facilities and the implantation of hostels.The results turned out that each program,having its strengths and weaknesses,satisfied different demands of living and producing.A view is drew that ecological design are playing the more and more important role in urban planning,which provids a new per-spective of the organic renewal of urban stock space.

Abstract:Previously commercial pedestrian streets developed extremely fast in urban China.The structure adjustment,layout's rationality and competitiveness improvement of their business forms have much to do with the planning,construction,investment and promotion of the streets as well as the development of the tourism industry chain.This study picks up two famous commercial pedestrian streets in Hangzhou as comparative cases,Hefang Street and Southern Song Imperial Street,which are designed and built in different eras.With an empirical method and TOPSIS by Information Entropy Weight(IEW),the research sets up an evaluation index system to calculate the competitiveness of each business form and analyze its layout on both streets.The research has drawn the conclusion that:(1) There are four most competitive business forms in both streets,and they are clothing,catering,crafts and groceries.As for Hefang Street,domestic crafts without brands,domestic-brand clothing and groceries are the top three forms in competitiveness,while domestic-brand catering,oversea-brand catering and domestic-brand clothing rank top three in Southern Song Imperial Street.(2) It is the crafts that display the most prominent difference in competitiveness rankings between the two streets: In Hefang Street,no matter with domestic or oversea brands,crafts are highly competitive,however,they are less competitive in Southern Song Imperial Street.(3) General stores are ranked at the bottom of the competitiveness in both streets.Additionally,the coordination and consistency between the business forms' competitiveness and their layouts has been discovered as well,and the relationship between the competitiveness and the agglomeration as well as the discrete of business forms has also been discussed.

Abstract:Most of the cities in China have set the polycentric city as one of the most important planning objectives,thus driving the urban spatial structure development from single center to multi-center.Multi-center structure is projected onto various urban spatial factors such as population,industries,and infrastructures,thereby affecting the sustainable development of the city.In order to reveal the urban multi-center morphological characteristics and its temporal and spatial evolution,this study takes Hangzhou as an example to analyze the spatial structure of morphological elements at different temporal scales by using GIS spatial analysis and profile analysis from various perspectives,such as population density,land price level,transportation facilities layout and nighttime lighting intensity.The spatial pattern of Hangzhou shows the characteristics of "strong center and weak sub-centers";the spatial distributions of all center levels characterized as internally dense and externally sparse,and the development is highly uneven,displaying a strong heterogeneity;the development of sub-centers has a big gap with the target of planning,and the functional links between the sub-center and the main center and among the sub-centers are not strong.The formation multicenter structure mainly relies on planning guidance and government forces rather than the driving of market forces,which causes the current features of the polycentric structure in Hangzhou.
Polycentric urban development: the case of Hangzhou

Abstract:Despite the advantages of polycentric structure and its rich literature drawn from cities in industialized countries, little attention has been paid to the study of polycentric urban development in developing countries based on land-use information. With Hangzhou used as a case study, the authors investigate polycentric urban development through an analysis of directions of urban expansion, urban rural gradients, and growth types. The multidisciplinary methodology employed, based on theories and methods in remote sensing, geographic information systems, and landscape ecology, has been proved to be useful in the morphological study of polycentric urban development. It was found that Hangzhou has expanded in different directions at various speeds, shifting to a polycentric urban pattern through radial expansion. Along the main transportation corridors, the values of the mean patch sizes of urban patches displayed multiple peaks, and the landscape-shape index maintained a horizontal trend in urban fringes, reflecting the formation of polycentricity. Further, as edge growth and spontaneous growth accounted for 40%-50% and 30-40% of urban growth, respectively, and infill growth was responsible for only a small proportion of urban growth, it is suggested that dispersed urban patches have been increasingly agglomerated into big ones, especially along road corridors. Hangzhou's polycentric urban development was shaped both by the planning efforts of the government and by market forces. The municipal government guided the polycentric development through drafting and revising master plans, annexing nearby districts, and establishing development zones. Nevertheless, market forces played an increasingly important role in Hangzhou's polycentric development through the implementation of an urban land market, the inflow of migrant workers, and the relocation of industries.

Spatial patterns analysis of urban expansion in Hangzhou city

Abstract:The economic growth and urbanization development of Hangzhou have been accelerated significantly and considerably by China's rapid urbanization and industrialization after the economic reformation in the late 1980s.The spatialtemporal characteristics and spatial patterns of urban expansion in Hangzhou from 1991to 2010were studied,which characterized by its typical peculiarity of the south lower reaches of the Yangtze River with street-town(a sub-district or sub-county administrative unit)as the spatial unit for our investigation and with the methods of Construction Land Expansion Intensity,Spatial Autocorrelation Analysis,and with the data of the existing land use classification maps(1991,2000,2005)and TM/ETM+remote sensing images(1995,2010),etc.The results indicated that:(1)the urban area outspreaded fleetly,while the development level differed in various streets(towns).(2)the"hotspots"of urban expansion in Hangzhou was changed roughly in the way:north-west-multiorientationeast.(3)the expansion patterns of the whole city included:edged,infilling,spontaneous and linear axes,and they evolved with urban development in the way as follow:Edged-prevailing &infilling-subsidiary(center),spontaneous to form new center,infillding-prevailing &edged-subsidiary(center &subcenters),edged-prevailing &infillingsubsidiary(center &subcenters),moreover the linear axes generated along the transportation networks and existed in the whole process of urban expansion from 1991to 2010.

Abstract:This study pioneers a participatory approach to urban renewal, prioritizing the intricacies of urban fabric and spatial design to meet the evolving needs of the community. It focuses on the ambitious transformation of Ziyang Street's agricultural market into a dynamic community plaza in Hangzhou, emphasizing direct engagement with local residents to understand their diverse aspirations for the redevelopment. The heart of our redevelopment strategy for Ziyang Street lies in the articulation of a design concept that champions urban renewal through a layered, compound approach to spatial organization. This is a bottom-up urban renewal design scheme led by residents. Our approach advocates for the transformation of traditional markets into bustling hubs of urban life, where the historical and the contemporary merge to form inclusive, compound farmers market and urban space.

Abstract:Under the background of stock planning, improving the quality of urban public space has become an important work of urban planning, design, and construction management. An accurate diagnosis of the spatial quality of streets and the effective implementation of street renewal planning play important roles in the high-quality development of urban spatial environments. However, traditional planning design and study methods, typically based on questionnaires, interviews, and on-site research, are inefficient and make it difficult to objectively and comprehensively grasp the overall construction characteristics and problems of urban street space in a large area, thus making it challenging to meet the needs of practical planning. Therefore, based on street view images, this study combined machine learning with an artificial audit to put forward a methodological framework for diagnosing the quality issues of street space. The Gongshu District of Hangzhou, China, was selected as a case study, and the diagnosis of quality problems for streets at different grades was achieved. The diagnosis results showed the current situation and problems of the selected area. Simultaneously, a series of targeted strategies for street spatial update planning was proposed to solve these problems. This diagnostic method, based on a combination of subjective and objective approaches, can be conducive to the precise and comprehensive identification of urban public spatial problems, which is expected to become an effective tool to assist in urban renewal and other planning decisions.

Abstract:As the most important part of urban space, street space is often regarded as the urban design object which would be made to reach certain spatial configuration expected by urban designer. As we all know that street space is shaped by the buildings along it, and that the buildings not only belong to different owners but also would be changed through the time. If it is true one might ask how does the street space change and what does this change mean to the urban development? Based upon urban morphological theory this paper investigates the relationships between street spatial configuration and urban development policies, building coding as well as urban activities. Three streets located in the center of Nanjing City with different functions and various land uses along them are selected as the research cases. Though the research this paper will demonstrate that by reading the changes of the street spatial configurations we can understand the social development stages and times, and by evaluating the street spatial configurations through the time we can see how the land policies changed the spaces. The paper suggests that confronting the dynamic phenomenon of the urban street space, urban designer should see urban form as urban morph, which will help designers to make decision more proper and better.
