Abstract:The bacterium strain, which could deposit Fe3+, was separated from cave wall of the Dongge Cave, Guizhou for simulating the Fe3+ precipitation process in order to analyze and discuss the function of bacterium in the sedimentation process of the cave ferric sediments. The experimental results indicated that the strain caused deposition of almost all of the Fe3+ and Ca2+ in 4 hours after the incubation of the ferric bacterium in 24 hours. The sedimentation products were analyzed by XRD、XRF approaches. There is no difference between the XRD and XRF spectra of bacterium treated sediments and those of the speleothem. They are composed of calcite、lepidocrocite and clay with major elements of Ca、Fe、Mn、Mg、P、Si and Al respectively. In the combination of analysis of the cave environment, it is believed that bacterium could concentrate Fe3+ from the cave seeping water through the biomineralization to the surface of the speleothem in form of non-crystalloine ferric maters. This is an important reason why the color and luster of the speleothem is changed.
