Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation of bone mineral density(BMD)and geometry of proximal femur of Chinese to biomechanies so as to evaluate the risk of proximal femur. Methods Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA)was used to measure BMD of the right proximal femur of 30 cadavers,16 males and 14 females, aged 60±10,that died of diseases except tuinor, hip deformity, and hip injury without a history of taking corticosteroids for a long time. The geometry of proximal femur was measured.A model of sideways fall was designed on the eadaveric femurs to determine the largest loading configuration and type of proximal femur fracture. Results Almost all the measured parameters were lower in the females than those in the males. The femur neck BMD showed a significantly stronger correlation with femoral strength(r2=0.807). The femur neck BMD was closely correlated with the proximal femur geometry. Conclusion Femur neck BMD plays an important role in the prediction of proximal femur fracture risk. The low rate of proximal femur fracture in Chinese is associated with the higher femur neck BMD and the smaller figure of Chinese. The diagnostic standard of osteoporosis in Chinese should be different from those in other countries.
