Abstract:Monticellite glass-ceramic coating was deposited on Ti-6Al-4V substrate by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). The morphology and microstructure of the surfaces of the coatings and their phase compositions were analyzed by SEM and XRD. The effects of heat-treatment on the porosity and the bonding strength of the coatings were investigated. Results showed that the heat-treated coating of initially low degree of crystallinities increased in crystallinity by the heat-treatment at 400 similar to 900 degrees C. The heat treatment reduced the porosities and increased the bond strength of the coatings. The coating heat-treated at 700 degrees C displayed the highest bonding strength of 37 MPa. The increased crystalline and dense microstructure after the heat-treating also led to considerable increase of the vitro stability. The heat-treated coatings, after immersing in SBF for 7 d generated an apatite precipitation layer. Cell-seeding test revealed that osteoblasts grew and proliferated very well on the surface of the monticellite coating.
