Abstract:A cobaltaelectro-catalyzed dehydrogenative [4+2] annulation of arylphosphinamides with alkynes was proposed in the present study to selectively construct a range of cyclic phosphinamide derivatives. Picolinic acid acted as a ligand to promote this transformation. A total of 38 examples demonstrated broad substrate scope, sufficient functional tolerance and excellent regioselectivity. Moreover, no additional oxidants and electrolytes were needed and it was possible to achieve gram scale synthesis, late-stage diversification and the removal of the directing group. Cyclic voltammetry and kinetic isotope experiments provided a better understanding to the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:A series of γ-substituted Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates were synthesized and subjected to phosphine-catalyzed annulations with electrophilic exocyclic alkenes, giving various valuable spirocyclopentenes in moderate to excellent yields with moderate to excellent diastereoselectivities. A large scope of MBH carbonates bearing γ-hydrogen, alkenyl, and alkynyl substituents was well tolerated. The annulation unprecedentedly involves β-, γ-, and δ-carbons of MBH carbonates.

Abstract:A phosphine-catalyzed [3+2] annulation between N-phenylpyrazolone derivatives and Morita–Baylis–Hillman carbonates for the synthesis of chiral heterocyclic systems containing spiro[cyclopentane-3,3′-pyrazole] scaffolds has been developed. The reaction afforded the desired products in moderate to high yields (up to 97%) with good to excellent diastereoselectivities (up to 20:1). A plausible reaction mechanism has also been proposed based on previous literature.

Abstract:A new strategy for the facile access to multi-functionalized benzofurans and 4,5-dihydrobenzofurans has been explored. The advantages of the present protocol include readily obtainable starting materials, mild and metal-free conditions, expedient and practical processes, excellent yields, and easy scale-up. The reaction demonstrated high efficiency to construct two rings in a single step. The zwitterionic intermediate generated from the conjugated attack of PPh3 to the ene-yne-ketone was proposed to be the key intermediate toward these valuable scaffolds.

Abstract:Asymmetric α-regioselective annulation of MBH carbonates with 4-arylmethylisoxazol-5-ones has been developed to afford spirocyclic oxindole derivatives containing three contiguous stereogenic centers and vicinal all-carbon quaternary chiral centers. This reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance. Excellent yields with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities were obtained in this efficient organocatalytic reaction.

Abstract:Under catalysis by chiral phosphine, an asymmetric isomerization/annulation cascade reaction of allylamines with allenoates was realized. A wide range of γ-substituted allenoates were tolerated to afford chiral pyrroline derivatives in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities. In the reaction, isomerization of readily available <i>N</i>-allylamines to reactive aliphatic imines through a 1,4-proton shift is a key step, which circumvents the isolation of highly unstable alkyl <i>N</i>-sulfonylimines.

Abstract:We herein report a phosphine-catalyzed (3 + 2) annulation of cyclopropenones with a wide variety of electrophilic π systems, including aldehydes, ketoesters, imines, isocyanates, and carbodiimides, offering products of butenolides, butyrolactams, maleimides, and iminomaleimides, respectively, in high yields with broad substrate scope. An α-ketenyl phosphorous ylide is validated as the key intermediate, which undergoes preferential catalytic cyclization with aldehydes rather than stoichiometric Wittig olefinations. This phosphine-catalyzed activation of cyclopropenones thus supplies a versatile C3 synthon for formal cycloadditon reactions.

Abstract:A multifunctional chiral phosphine-catalyzed enantioselective [3+2] annulation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates with cyclopentenones provides a direct approach to access functional 4-oxo-1,3a,4,5,6,6a-hexahydropentalene compounds. Moderate to good yields and excellent enantioselectivities (>90% ee) were obtained for a series of substrates under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:The phosphine-catalyzed (3+3) annulation reaction of cinnamaldehyde-derived Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds as dinucleophiles has been developed, giving hexahydrochromenone derivatives in high yields with moderate to good diastereoselectivities. The reaction worked through double conjugate addition of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to the phosphonium intermediates generated from the cinnamaldehyde-derived MBH carbonates. The phosphine-catalyzed (3+3) annulation of cinnamaldehyde-derived Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds as dinucleophiles gave hexahydrochromenone derivatives.

Abstract:Phosphine-catalyzed (4+2) annulation of the acidic hydrogen-tethered allylic carbonates with electron-deficient alkenes was achieved. Various electron-deficient alkenes and allylic carbonates were well tolerated under mild reaction conditions, providing a variety of polysubstituted spirocyclohexenes, spirocyclohexanones or cyclohexanones in moderate to high yields. The scale-up reactions and further transformations of the products had been performed. The acidic hydrogen-tethered allylic carbonates displayed nice reactivity and will find more applications.

Abstract:An amine-catalyzed [4 + 2] annulation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman allylic acetates 2 with electron-deficient alkenes or diazenes has been developed for efficient syntheses of highly functionalized cyclohexenes, tetrahydropyridazines, and important spirocycles. This reaction unveils a new reactivity pattern of the intensely studied allylic compounds 2 acting as a C(4) synthon in Lewis base catalyzed annulation reactions and also showcases divergent catalysis between tertiary amines and phosphines.

Abstract:The Morita–Baylis–Hillman (MBH) carbonates are widely participated in many meaningful annulations. In considering of exploring the feasibility of phosphine-mediated longer-chained MBH carbonate-derived synthons, herein we report a phosphine-mediated MBH carbonates-derived C5 synthon for the first time, enabling a formal [5+1] annulation with readily available isocyanates. The reaction proceeds via a tandem Wittig and aminobenzannulation process, smoothly constructing both diarylamines and anilines with a broad scope of substrates and excellent chemoselectively.

Abstract:The enantioselective Pd-catalyzed allylation of diaryl-substituted allylic carbonates and diphenylphosphine oxide was investigated. This method gave allylic diphenylphosphine oxides in yields up to 95% with 97% ee. Pd-catalyzed allylation of (E)-methyl allyl carbonates with diisopropyl phosphonate was also examined.
