Abstract:Chitosan, which is derived from chitin, is the only known natural alkaline cationic polymer. Chitosan is a biological material that can significantly improve the living standard of the country. It has excellent properties such as good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and cell affinity, and has excellent biological activities such as antibacterial, antioxidant, and hemostasis. In recent years, the demand has increased significantly in many fields and has huge application potential. Due to the poor water solubility of chitosan, its wide application is limited. However, chemical modification of the chitosan matrix structure can improve its solubility and biological activity, thereby expanding its application range. The review covers the period from 1996 to 2022 and was elaborated by searching Google Scholar, PubMed, Elsevier, ACS publications, MDPI, Web of Science, Springer, and other databases. The various chemical modification methods of chitosan and its main activities and application research progress were reviewed. In general, the modification of chitosan and the application of its derivatives have had great progress, such as various reactions, optimization of conditions, new synthetic routes, and synthesis of various novel multifunctional chitosan derivatives. The chemical properties of modified chitosan are usually better than those of unmodified chitosan, so chitosan derivatives have been widely used and have more promising prospects. This paper aims to explore the latest progress in chitosan chemical modification technologies and analyze the application of chitosan and its derivatives in various fields, including pharmaceuticals and textiles, thus providing a basis for further development and utilization of chitosan.

Abstract:A series of quinolones with substitutions at the 8 position has been prepared as part of a study to examine the relationship between structural modifications at this position and activity against mycobacteria. The compounds were prepared by procedures described in the literature and were evaluated for their activities against Mycobacterium fortuitum and Mycobacterium smegmatis. The activities of the compounds against these two organisms were used as a measure of Mycobacterium tuberculosis activity. The results demonstrate that the contribution of the 8 position to antimycobacterial activity was dependent on the substituent at N-1 and was in the order (i) COMe approximately CBr > CCI > CH approximately CF approximately COEt > N > CCF3 when N-1 was cyclopropyl; (ii) N approximately CH > CF > COMe when N-1 was 2,4-difluorophenyl; (iii) N > or = CH when N-1 was tert-butyl; and (iv) N > CH when N-1 was ethyl. In general, derivatives with piperazine substitutions at C-7 were slightly less active against mycobacteria than the analogs with pyrrolidine substitutions, regardless of the pattern of substitution at the 8 position. Several of the best compounds were evaluated for their potential side effects as well as their activities against Mycobacterium aurum, Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare, and M. tuberculosis. These agents exhibited biological profiles similar to or better than those of the positive controls ciprofloxacin and sparfloxacin.

Abstract:Chitosan is derived from chitin polysaccharide, the main component of crustacean shells. Chitosan is a biocompatible, nontoxic, and biodegradable polymer soluble in acidic solutions. It is widely used in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. Antimicrobial activities of chitosan against different bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens have been considered one of its attractive properties, making chitosan valuable for biological applications, including textile, food, tissue engineering, agriculture, and environmental protection. Additionally, chitosan has beneficial effects on livestock, poultry, fish, and crustaceans, which can enhance immunity, improve feed conversion, and promote growth. However, the water solubility of chitosan influences antimicrobial capabilities, limiting its application. In the present work, we reviewed the preparation, factors affecting antimicrobial activity, morphological structure, antimicrobial mechanism, and application of chitosan derivatives, and the problems and prospects were pointed out. Collectively, this review provided an update on the application of chitosan derivatives and their potential for further advanced applications in the antimicrobial field.

Abstract:Chitosan is a biopolymer obtained from chitin, one of the most abundant and renewable materials on Earth. Chitin is a primary component of cell walls in fungi, the exoskeletons of arthropods such as crustaceans, e.g., crabs, lobsters and shrimps, and insects, the radulae of molluscs, cephalopod beaks, and the scales of fish and lissamphibians. The discovery of chitin in 1811 is attributed to Henri Braconnot while the history of chitosan dates back to 1859 with the work of Charles Rouget. The name of chitosan was, however, introduced in 1894 by Felix Hoppe-Seyler. Chitosan has attracted major scientific and industrial interests from the late 1970s due to its particular macromolecular structure, biocompatibility, biodegradability and other intrinsic functional properties. Chitosan and derivatives have practical applications in the food industry, agriculture, pharmacy, medicine, cosmetology, textile and paper industries, and in chemistry. In recent years, chitosan has also received much attention in dentistry, ophthalmology, biomedicine and bioimaging, hygiene and personal care, veterinary medicine, packaging industry, agrochemistry, aquaculture, functional textiles and cosmetotextiles, catalysis, chromatography, beverage industry, photography, wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering, and biotechnology. Nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals are actually growing markets, and therapeutic and biomedical products should be the next markets in the development of chitosan. Chitosan is also the object of numerous fundamental studies. In this review, we highlight a selection of works on chitosan applications published over the past two decades.

Abstract:In the field of medical research, the development of safe and effective wound dressings is a continuous goal. Chitosan (CS) is highly sought after because of its unique biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial, and healing-promoting properties. The CS molecule has a significant number of active amino and hydroxyl groups; thus, making substitutions and creating derivatives with varied biochemical properties are relatively straightforward processes. This review addresses the range of functions performed by CS and its derivatives in wound care, such as haemostasis, antibacterial, antioxidant, and wound healing. Furthermore, it summarises the various types of CS-based dressings, their performance features and applications. Finally, the future directions of CS-based dressings are proposed.

Abstract:Chitosan is a natural biopolymer with a modifiable structure and abundant function groups, moreover, it can be processed into various shapes and sizes, making it suitable for various applications. This review analyzed and summarized the recent advances in chitosan-based materials, particularly focusing on the modification of chitosan by physical, chemical and biological methods, which provided plentiful information on the preparation, characterization and application of chitosan-based materials. In this review, various preparation and modification methods for improving chitosan performances, as well as the application of chitosan and its derivatives, were critically analyzed and summarized in detail. Chitosan-based materials can be fabricated into different shapes and sizes, such as nanofiber, nanoparticles, microspheres, membranes, and 3D printed scaffolds. In addition, chitosan can be modified through physical, chemical, and biological modifications, to obtain versatile chitosan-based materials. For physical modification, crosslinking and blending are commonly used., while chemical modification is based on chemical reactions (e.g. acylation, esterification, etherification, N-alkylation, graft copolymerization, and degradation), to prepare the corresponding derivatives (e.g. chemically cross-linked chitosan, grafted chitosan, low molecular weight chitosan, and oligo-chitosan) through crosslinking, grafting, and degradation. The biological modification is associated with various enzymes to realize the hydrolysis or grafting. With improved performances through modification, as well as various shapes and sizes, chitosan-based materials show promising applications in versatile fields, such as water treatment, food processing, pharmaceutical/biomedicine, textiles and agriculture. This review will deepen the understanding the state of the art of chitosan-based materials, including their preparation, characterization and application.

Abstract:Chitin is a linear polysaccharide of N-acetylglucosamine, which is highly abundant in nature and mainly produced by marine crustaceans. Chitosan is obtained by hydrolytic deacetylation. Both polysaccharides are renewable resources, simply and cost-effectively extracted from waste material of fish industry, mainly crab and shrimp shells. Research over the past five decades has revealed that chitosan, in particular, possesses unique and useful characteristics such as chemical versatility, polyelectrolyte properties, gel- and film-forming ability, high adsorption capacity, antimicrobial and antioxidative properties, low toxicity, and biocompatibility and biodegradability features. A plethora of chemical chitosan derivatives have been synthesized yielding improved materials with suggested or effective applications in water treatment, biosensor engineering, agriculture, food processing and storage, textile additives, cosmetics fabrication, and in veterinary and human medicine. The number of studies in this research field has exploded particularly during the last two decades. Here, we review recent advances in utilizing chitosan and chitosan derivatives in different technical, agricultural, and biomedical fields.

Abstract:Chitosan is a kind of natural polysaccharide biomass with the second highest content in nature after cellulose, which has good biological properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, hemostasis, mucosal adsorption, non-toxicity, and antibacterial properties. Therefore, hydrogels prepared from chitosan have the advantages of good hydrophilicity, unique three-dimensional network structure, and good biocompatibility, so they have received extensive attention and research in environmental testing, adsorption, medical materials, and catalytic supports. Compared with traditional polymer hydrogels, biomass chitosan-based hydrogels have advantages such as low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, outstanding processability, and low cost. This paper reviews the preparation of various chitosan-based hydrogels using chitosan as raw material and their applications in the fields of medical materials, environmental detection, catalytic carriers, and adsorption. Some views and prospects are put forward for the future research and development of chitosan-based hydrogels, and it is believed that chitosan-based hydrogels will be able to obtain more valuable applications.

Advances in extraction, utilization, and development of chitin/chitosan and its derivatives from shrimp shell waste

Abstract:Shrimp consumption is in great demand among the seafood used globally. However, this expansion has resulted in the substantial generation and disposal of shrimp shell waste. Through literature search, it has been observed that since 2020, global scholars have shown unprecedented interest in shrimp shell waste and its chitin/chitosan. However, these new insights lack corresponding and comprehensive summarization and analysis. Therefore, this article provides a detailed review of the extraction methods, applications, and the latest research developments on chitin/chitosan from shrimp shells, including micro-nano derivatives, from 2020 to the present. The results indicate that chemical extraction remains the primary technique for the extraction and preparation of chitin/chitosan from shrimp shells. With further refinement and development, adjusting parameters in the chemical extraction process or employing auxiliary techniques such as microwave and radiation enable the customization of target products with different characteristics (e.g., deacetylation degree, molecular weight, and degree of acetylation) according to specific needs. Additionally, in pursuit of environmentally friendly, efficient, and gentle extraction processes, recent research has shifted toward microbial fermentation and green solvent methods for chitin/chitosan extraction. Beyond the traditional antibacterial, film-forming, and encapsulation functionalities, research into the applications of chitosan in biomedical, food processing, new materials, water treatment, and adsorption fields is gradually deepening. Chitin/chitosan derivatives and their modified products have also been a focal point of research in recent years. However, with the rapid expansion, the future development of chitin/chitosan and its derivatives still faces challenges related to the unclear mechanism of action and the complexities associated with industrial scale-up.

Abstract:Chitosan is a naturally originating product that can be applied in many areas due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxic properties. The broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of chitosan offers great commercial potential for this product. Nevertheless, the antimicrobial activity of chitosan varies, because this activity is associated with its physicochemical characteristics and depends on the type of microorganism. In this review article, the fundamental properties, modes of antimicrobial action, and antimicrobial effects-related factors of chitosan are discussed. We further summarize how microorganisms genetically respond to chitosan. Finally, applications of chitosan-based biomaterials, such as nanoparticles and films, in combination with current clinical antibiotics or antifungal drugs, are also addressed.
