Abstract:We report the synthesis of stable nanometer-size silver-coated polydiacetylene (PDA) particles. At first, an ethanol solution of diacetylene (DA) is dispersed into a Ag+ ion containing aqueous solution. Silver ions are attracted to -CCO- anions of DA, then monomer DA vesicles coated by silver ions are formed by a long-term ultrasonication treatment. The monomer DA vesicles are photopolymerized and the silver ions are photo-reduced simultaneously to form coated composite particles. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.
Preparation of Reversibly Photo-Cross-Linked Nanogels from Ph-Responsive Block Copolymers and Use As Nanoreactors for the Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract:Reversibly photo-cross-linkable pH-responsive block copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly((2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-4-methyl-[7-(methacryloyl)oxyethyloxy] coumarin)) (PEO-b-P(DEA-co-CMA)) was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Block copolymer nanogels could be easily prepared by first photo-cross-linking of the micelles at pH>7 and then adjusting the solution to pH<7. The photo-cross-linking was proved to be reversibly controlled under alternative irradiation of UV light at 365nm and 254nm. As a result, the cross-linking degrees and sizes of the nanogels can be easily controlled by alternatively UV light irradiation. Finally, the nanogels can serve as nanoreactors for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. The protonated DEA units were first coordinated with HAuCl4, and then the electrostatically bounded AuCl4− anions were reduced to gold nanoparticles by NaBH4. The nanogel-supported gold nanoparticles were used in chemical catalysis. The pH-responsive photo-cross-linked nanogels have been characterized using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis spectra and 1H NMR spectroscopy measurements, respectively.

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.

Abstract:A new class of soluble, processable polydiacetylenes(PDA) derived from the alkoxycarbonylmethyl-and related urethanes of 9-(aryl-5, 7-nonadiyn-1-ol has been designed and synthesized. The aryl groups used include N-methyl-anilino, diphenylamino, and 9-carbazolyl. These PDA are susceptible to postpolymerization functionalization via the aryiamine and ester groups. Examples of the former include tricyanovinylation and diazonium salt coupling. The latter materials are the first rigid rod polymers to allow direct photofabrication of regular surface relief gratings, as revealed by atomic force microscopy(AFM).

Abstract:We report the recent progress in the preparation of functional poly(disubstituted acetylene)s (PDSAs) through post-polymerization modification routes. The metathesis polymerization of disubstituted acetylene monomers activated by Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts, which do not tolerate highly polar functionalities, was assumed to be a key step in the polymer synthetic procedures. We and other groups have explored several approaches to prepare PDSAs with latent reactive functionalities, which are inactive to Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts but can be used as highly reactive sites for post-polymerization modification. Click chemistry, Michael-type addition reactions, the use of activated esters and other strategies are demonstrated by recently published examples. These works indicate that post-polymerization modification is an efficient route to the synthesis of various functional PDSAs.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a poly(1-chloro-2-phenylacetylene) derivative with an electron-withdrawing substituent on the phenyl group. A combination of an N-heterocyclic carbene-based Pd catalyst (NHC-Pd) with silver trifluoromethyl sulfonate (AgOTf) formed an active catalytic system for the polymerization of 1-chloro-2-(para-substituted)-phenylacetylenes. Based on this active catalytic system, functional poly(di-substituted acetylene) (PDSA) bearing an aldehyde group (P3) was obtained in high yield. The exceptional P3 bearing a reactive aldehyde group on its side chain was used as a precursor to be subsequently modified with amines to generate a novel PDSA (P3-ppm) possessing Schiff-base functionalities in good yield.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of poly-p-phenyleneethynylene gold nanoparticles (PPE-Au) were synthesized via directly grafting maleimide functionalized gold nanoparticles (MA-Au) onto PPE chains by a mild Diels-Alder reaction. The Diels-Alder reaction between copolymers and MA-Au leads to self-assembly of the MA-Au as well as enhances electronic communication between the copolymers and inorganic particles. The as-prepared hybrid nanoassemblies show homogeneous status and well-defined interfaces, which facilitate the electronic interaction between conjugated polymers and gold nanoparticles. Moreover, dramatic photophysical properties and an influence on the assembly behavior of gold nanoparticles are also exhibited, which allows this procedure to be performed as a smart assay for monitoring the process of the Diels-Alder reaction.

Abstract:Cu 2 O cubes, octahedra, and rhombic dodecahedra with and without surface 4-nitrophenylacetylene (4-NA) functionalization were used to catalyze dimethylacrylamide (DMA) photopolymerization in water. Among these samples, the 4-NA-modified Cu 2 O cubes presented a highest monomer conversion percentage of 69% after 1 h of 420 nm light irradiation, possibly due to the most efficient electron transfer from the particles to the Ph 2 ICl co-initiator. The synthesized polymers generally have high molecular weights and good dispersity values. The reaction can be easily scaled up 10 fold under room light. After simple particle removal, a transparent gel-like polymer product is obtained. The Cu 2 O crystals can be recycled for use in more polymerization reactions. Electron and hole scavenging experiments were conducted to support the proposed reaction mechanism. This work shows surface-controlled semiconductor nanocrystals can be simple yet highly effective photocatalysts for some polymerization reactions.

Abstract:A novel carbazolyldiacetylene derivative of 5-[1,2]dithiolan-3-ylpentanoic acid 1,6-bis((N-carbazol-3-yl)methyl)-2,4-hexadiyne ester (DCHD-HS) was synthesized. DCHD-HS showed unusual fluorescence enhancement when it was bound to gold nanoparticles. The studies also showed that varied solvents and ratios of ligand/gold particles that served as the driving forces to control aggregation resulted in emission enhancement. A rational explanation for this phenomenon was discussed and elucidated.

Abstract:We report a novel self-assembly pathway from a bis(imidazolyl) diphenyl–diacetylene (DPDA) compound as a realization of self-templated photopolymerization with high polymerization degrees. The work takes advantage of a cylindrical self-assembly that strengthens the preorganization of the diphenyl–diacetylene moiety at the single molecular level. On this basis, photopolymerization of DPDA can be conducted smoothly to form high-molecular-weight polydiphenyl diacetylene. Such a cylindrical self-assembly is highly dependent on molecular structure, and control studies show that only oligomers can be formed on random self-assemblies from a monoimidazolyl or nonimidazolyl diphenyl–diacetylene compound. Moreover, the cylindrical self-assembly based systems bear aggregation-induced emission enhancement characteristics and are solution processable. The leading thin-film could afford a selectively tunable function in luminescent micropatterns.

Abstract:Photopolymerization of diacetylenes usually requires stringent reaction conditions like high energy irradiation of 254-nm light or even gamma-rays, which are generally harmful to the human body and thus mild conditions with lower energy irradiation are required. In this study, different diphenyldiacetylene (DPDA) derivatives were rationally designed followed by the investigation of their photopolymerization behavior. It was found that the para-substituted amino groups could render the absorption band of DPDA bathochromically shifted, ensuring a 365-nm light wavelength coverage. On this basis, an organogel system was constructed by chemically modifying cholesteryl and lipoic acid onto the DPDA moiety in aromatic solvents. Such uniform self-assemblies further facilitated to a rather high degree of polymerization by 365-nm irradiation. As a kind of fluorescent materials, the whole polymerization process of this system can be visualized by a photoluminescent signal.

Abstract:Optical phase conjugation can be enhanced in composite nanometer-size particles of nonlinear core and metallic shell suspended in a host medium because the optical held is concentrated in both the interior and exterior neighborhoods of the particles and magnified by the surface mediated plasmon. Greatly enhanced effective third-order nonlinear susceptibility of metal coated nanoparticles has been theoretically predicted, and the metal coated semiconductor nanoparticles have been synthesized. We report the synthesis of stable nanometer-size silver coated polydiacetylene (PDA) particles. At first, an ethanol solution of DA is dispersed into a Ag+ ion containing aqueous solution. Silver ions are attracted to -COO- anions of DA, and monomer DA vesicles coated by silver ions are formed by a long-term ultra-sonication treatment. Then, the monomer DA vesicles are photopolymerized and the sliver ions are photoreduced simultaneously to form nanocornposite. Absorption spectra of the excitonic pi conjugation in the PDA backbone and the surface plasma resonant absorption band of a large silver metal cluster have been observed as the synthesis proceeds. The shell structure of silver coated PDA nanoparticle has been proved by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and electron diffraction.

Abstract:Narrow disperse poly(divinylbenzene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (P(DVB-co-GMA)) microspheres with reactive epoxy group were prepared by distillation precipitation copolymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator in neat acetonitrile. The epoxy group was modified with ethylenediamine (EDA) for transferring to amino group, which was used as a stabilizer for the gold metallic nanocolloids during the in situ reduction of gold chloride trihydrate (HAuCl4) with sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reductant. The catalytic properties of the microsphere-stabilized gold nanocolloids (P(DVB-co-GMA)-NH2@Au) were investigated by the reduction of aqueous 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AnP) with NaBH4 as reductant. The resultant microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), elemental analysis (EA), Zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mission spectrum, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy.

Abstract:A chemical-and-photochemical-induced dual polymerization at the air–water interface was performed for the first time, by using a ternary mixture of a octadecyltrimethoxysilane (C18TMS), 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PDA), andN-(11-O-α-d-mannopyranosyl-3,6,9-trioxa) undecyl 10,12-pentacosa-diynamide (PDTM). Different dual polymerization behaviors of the mixed monolayers of PDA/PDTM/C18TMS (7:1:8 molar ratio) at different subphase pH were monitored by surface pressure–area isotherms and UV–vis spectra. At pH 1, the C18TMS formed a long linear polymer network by strong intermolecular condensation. The PDA/PDTM was isolated to small domains by this network and can only be polymerized weakly upon UV irradiation. At pH 2.6, the weak condensation of C18TMS formed short linear polymers, which caused phase separation between C18TMS and PDA/PDTM. The strong photochemical polymerization of the PDA/PDTM rich domain was similar to the PDA/PDTM binary mixed monolayer. At pH 4.0, the partially hydrolyzed C18TMS was miscible with PDA/PDTM and slowed the polymerization process of PDA/PDTM upon UV irradiation. These results show geometry and kinetic controls of the PDA/PDTM polymer in 2D by using the C18TMS polymer network.

Abstract:We report herein the synthesis of a series of polymerizable bolaamphiphiles containing a diacetylene group and mesogenic unit and their self-organization behaviors in bulk and at interface. The polymerizable bolaamphiphiles are noted as DPDA-n, where n refers to the spacer length of alkyl chain. DPDA-10 with suitable spacer length can self-organize into stable cylindrical micellar nanostructures, and these nanostructures have preferred orientation regionally when adsorbed at the mica/water interface. It is confirmed that the micellar nanostructure of DPDA-10 can be polymerized both in the bulk solution and in the film by UV irradiation. The emission property of DPDA-10 after UV irradiation has been significantly enhanced in comparison to that before polymerization, which may be due to the extension of the conjugated system arising from the transformation of the diacetylene group into polydiacetylene upon polymerization. In addition, the self-organization of DPDA-n is dependent on the spacer length. DPDA-7 with a short spacer length forms an irregular flat sheet structure with many defects; DPDA-15 with a long spacer length forms rodlike micellar structures. Thus, this work may provide a new approach for designing and fabricating organic functional nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Acetylenic monomers containing highly polar functional groups, especially those with active hydrogen atoms, have been difficult to polymerize because their toxic interactions with transition metal complexes deactivate catalyst systems. In this work. we Succeeded in direct polymerizations of a series of highly polar phenylacetylene derivatives. The polymerizations of 4-ethynylbenzoic acid (1), 4-hydroxybutyl 4-ethynylbenzoate (2), 6-(4-ethynylphenoxy)hexanoic acid (3), 4-ethynylaniline (4), and 1-ethynyl-4-nitrobenzene (5) catalyzed by organorhodium complexes afforded corresponding polymers (P1-P5) of high molecular weight (M-w as high as 489 500) and low polydispersity index (M-w/M-n as low as 1.03). The structures of the polymers were characterized spectroscopically. Treatments by base and acid readily transformed neutral polymers P1 and P4 to polyelectrolytes P1(-) and P4(+), respectively. Simple mixing of the conjugated polyelectrolytes with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) afforded polyacetylene/MWNT nanohybrids with water solubility Of LIP to 316 mg/L. The hybrids were facilely decorated by metal (oxide) nanoparticles, furnishing multicomponent composites of P1(-)/MWNT/Ag, P4(+)/MWNT/Ag, and P4(+)/MWNT/ZnO.

Abstract:Photopolymerization reactions exhibit distinctive advantages over traditional, thermally initiated polymerization, such as better temporal controls, faster kinetics, and solvent-free conditions. However, most photopolymerizations employ a combination of photochemically labile molecules as sensitizers and initiators, which are inevitably covalently incorporated into the polymer products as end groups, with unknown influences on the mechanical, biological, and environmental properties. Therefore, it is desirable to produce compositionally “pure” polymers with one single repeating unit. Here, we demonstrate that a commercially available monomer N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) can be used to produce polyDMA (PDMA) homopolymers without heterogeneous end groups, which can be regulated by a cheap and commonly seen naphthalimide: the polymerization of DMA yields PDMA with high molecular weight, and nearly 100% monomer conversion could be achieved within 2 min under a UV light-emitting diode (λ = 365 nm), but was instantly terminated in the dark. To understand the mechanism of such dramatic light/dark switching behaviors of the system, we propose a plausible catalytic cycle that is supported by theoretical calculations and experiments: using a nonpolymerizable aliphatic amine as a model compound, we infer that DMA and naphthalimide may form a “UV-activated complex”, captured by high-resolution mass spectrometry, before it dissociates into an unstable DMA radical cation to initiate the polymerization and a stable NCP radical anion, which can be analyzed with NMR and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopically under argon at room temperature.
