A Study on Effects of Slack in Troubled Firms: Also Study on Moderating Effects of Market Search Intensity

Abstract:Some scholars argue that,slack could act as buffers when firms dropped into troubles or met with environmental jolts that changed the levels of resource munificence in a short time.And it's worth asking whether their arguments were rooted in reality,because all of slack and troubles could be divided into several sorts.Some scholars also posited that,compared to the firms lacking resource,firms with sufficient resource could promote market searching activities,such as investment.In fact,market searching and troubles or jolts might happen simultaneously,and it was necessary to analyze and testify the effects of slack in contexts which were composed of these multiple components.This paper firstly analyzed the changes of slack’s effects before and in financial crisis or in underperformance situation.Troubled firms usually searched for investment opportunities and approaches to get rid of troubles,and this paper then analyzed the influences of searching behaviors on slack’s effects.Basing on panel data of listed companies in manufacturing industry between 2005 and 2010 and using global financial crisis of 2008 as a natural experimental context,we testified that unabsorbed slack played less positive effects in financial crisis and more in underperformance situation than in normal periods,but absorbed slack acted completely different in the former situation.Meanwhile,we confirmed that market searching behavior could moderate relationship between unabsorbed slack(or absorbed slack) and performance negatively(or positively),and two troubles discussed in this paper could also affect moderating effects of searching behaviors on slack.Our work showed that different environmental changes might bring entirely different impacts on slack’s effects even if all of these changes meant threat or negative for firms.In summary,this paper demonstrated that changing slack’s forms might alter their inner effect mechanism completely,and it was necessary to incorporate contextual factors into the studies about slack.Furthermore,it seemed that disputing about the benefits or harms of this kind of resource made no sense because both of their utilities and costs might change with external contexts.
