Neuroprotective Effects of Procyanidins on Focal Cerebral Ischemia in Rats

Abstract:Objective To study the neuroprotective effects of procyanidins on focal cerebral ischemia.Methods Shealthy SD rats,half male and half female,were randomly divided into the sham-operative group,focal cerebral ischemia group and procyanidins group which is divided into 3 groups with 50 mg/kg,100 mg/kg and 200mg/kg procyanidins respectively.The neurological deficit score of rats was assessed and the activity of ET and CGRP in brain tissue was measured after 24h focal cerebral ischemia.Results The neurological deficit score are better of these procyanidins preconditioning group with 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg than the focal cerebral ischemia group(P0.05).The activity of ET are lower and the activity of CGRP are higher of these procyanidins preconditioning group with 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg than the focal cerebral ischemia group(P0.01).Conclusions Procyanidins in small doze which has given prior to the focal cerebral ischemia play a neuroprotect role by decreasing the activity of ET and increasing the activity of CGRP.
