A Comparative Study Of Political Trust Between Urban And Rural China Youth

Abstract:The decline of citizens' trust in government has recently become a major concern of academic research, but whether there are any differences between urban and rural Chinese regarding this is still not clear. Based on the data from a unique household survey Conducted in 2011, this paper compares the characteristics and factors that affect the political trust of urban and rural youth. The results show that political trust of contemporary China youth is relatively high, though it differs when referring to special aspects. The percent of trust in government agencies is the highest among both urban and rural China youth, followed by the performance of trust and government official trust, while the procedure trust is the lowest. Meanwhile, their trust in government agencies displays a differential mode of association that higher levels, particularly the Center, are more trustworthy than lower levels. As for the comparison of urban and rural youth political trust in term of their outcome, the former are generally lower than the latter. The result of multiple regression shows that the level of urban and rural youth political trust is jointly influenced by the social participation and social class identification; that is, the higher of class identification and social participation they recognized, the higher political trust they demonstrated. There is, however, a relatively stronger negative link between education, income and political trust in urban youth, which suggests that high education and income contributes to a low level of trust in government, but these variables have no effect on rural youth. This study first provides a direct comparative study of political trust between urban and rural China residents. To improve political trust and build a harmonious society, not only are the efforts of the citizens needed, but their social capital should also be better constructed. Furthermore, the government should pay more attention to the political attitude of those higher social-economical groups who have lower political trust.
