Abstract:In this paper, a kind of folding wing is designed to facilitate the aerial deployment of underwater vehicles. The folding wing expands under the action of the torsion spring when the underwater vehicle enters the water. The geometric model of the folding wing is established, and then the expanding time of the folding wing is analyzed using MATLAB. The bidirectional fluid-structure coupling CFD simulation is performed on a part of the folding wing to obtain the lift and drag at different angles of attack. An expanding experiment of a structural unit was carried out to verify the performance of the folding wing.

Abstract:Modeling of cross-medium vehicles with complex shapes still requires a thorough investigation. This paper proposes a multi-method combination modeling approach to tackle such a problem. First-principle model is derived to determinate a model structure. Experiments are then set up to estimate parameters related to its rigid-body model and propulsion system. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is performed to calculate and identify coefficients related to surrounding fluid. Base on the model obtained, we systematically investigate the possible steady motion of the cross-medium vehicle and analyze their related performance. Results are instrumental for designing controllers for the vehicle to perform autonoumous missions.

Abstract:A trans-media vehicle is a new type of equipment that can adapt to two environments, water and air, to maintain optimal hydrodynamic and aerodynamic performance. However, no matter what kind of trans-media vehicle, its dynamics are much more complicated when traversing the interface of the medium, as the parameters are time-varying due to the change in ambient medium and vehicle attitudes. In order to improve the stability and performance of the trans-media vehicle in complex environments, an accurate mathematical model is established to characterize the dynamics of the trans-media vehicle in this process in this study. The time-varying hydrodynamic coefficients with different attitudes or depths are obtained using computational fluid dynamics software. The mathematical model is solved iteratively using a Runge–Kutta solver to calculate the dynamic response. A prototype of trans-media vehicle is fabricated, and motion experiments are performed in the pool. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the established model and lay the foundation for further controller design, providing a reference for the dynamic modeling of other similar equipment operating in complex environments. The primary novelty of this study lies in the fact that the established dynamic model considers the complex interaction between the attitude of the trans-media vehicle and the inherent different properties of water and air and utilizes computational fluid dynamics software to accurately obtain time-varying coefficients under different attitudes and depths. This approach not only recognizes the criticality of orientation-dependent hydrodynamic coefficients but also incorporates their temporal variations, which were often overlooked in previous studies.

Abstract:Unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) have gained growing popularity in coastal water recently due to their wide range of applications. Hydrodynamic modeling poses a significant challenge for UUVs, yet it is an essential part of the development of UUVs, serving as the foundation for all applications. Traditional approaches, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and towing tank experiments, are often complex and costly. With the trend towards miniaturization of UUVs in coastal waters, in this paper, we propose a streamlined approach for the hydrodynamic model identification of lightweight UUVs. Our approach involves designing a series of experiments to obtain all necessary parameters of the UUV. Notably, we identify the hydrodynamic parameters of the UUV solely through sinesweep and step signal inputs without the need for towing tests. This method requires only a simple setup and velocity information of the UUV. Our experiments conducted on our UUV platform, Sea-U-Dragon, demonstrate commendable results in model identification. In addition, our proposed methodology offers a cost effective and efficient solution for the dynamic modeling of other lightweight UUVs.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a mathematical model of a mid-water trawl system. The model consisted of towing warps, otter boards, a trawl net, and other rigging components. The warp and the net were modeled with the lumped mass method. The otter board was modeled in 6 degrees of freedom, and the variation in the otter board's hydrodynamic parameters with different yaws, pitches, and roll angles was also considered. We used a first-order approximation to simplify the relationship between the otter board's hydrodynamic parameters and its working angle, and the coefficients included in the otter board model were then estimated using the sea trail data. With this approach, the movement of the otter board was simulated, and its influence on the trawl gear performance was analyzed. The final results of the door depth and the door spread with warp lengths from 200 to 900 m showed good agreements with the sea trail data, and the mean normalized absolute error between the simulation and the measurement was approximately 5%.

Abstract:The similitude relationships of geometrical and physical parameters between the real and scale reduced model of ship lift system were deduced based on similitude theory of fluid dynamics and structure dynamics.According to these relationships a series of tests were carried out for a 1:30 scale reduced model. The experimental results can reflect the dynamic features of such a complicated system and can be used for further study and design.

Abstract:This research proposes a new dynamic model for underwater vehicles with variable mass and center of gravity. The variation of center of gravity and moment inertia of the vehicle is related to the convolution of mass changing rate function and trajectory function. Furthermore, the center of gravity varies obviously if exists disturbance and variable mass parcels. In comparison of fixed center of gravity model, the variation of center of gravity impacts the maneuverability of underwater vehicles greatly. As extended applications, this research provides theoretical basis for the design of floating mining craft, underwater dredging craft and other variable mass underwater vehicles.

Abstract:For the purpose ofdeveloping the shiphandling simulator for high-speed boat, the nonlinear mathematical model is proposed for a kind of foil-assisted catamaran. The calculations are detailed on the relevant parameters, and the influences of environmental waves on boat’s motions are considered. Based on such a boat “HC200B-A1”, simulation researches are car- ried out by use of Matlab’s Simulink Toolbox with 6 groups of wave parameters. It’s found that the amplitudes of heave and pitch motion in following seas are larger than those in ahead seas, which agrees well with nautical practice. And the analysis for this phenomenon is presented from the angle of the mathematical model. Furthermore, the results also demonstrate that the established model herein is reliable for the high-speed boat simulator.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part M: Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment, Ahead of Print. To overcome the difficulties of time-consuming and inefficient in the response calculations of the submerged cylindrical shell with internal substructures, this paper firstly presents a refined mode superposition method. In view of the necessity and difficulties of directly and quickly obtaining the frequencies and modes of structures submerged in fluid (named the wet modes), the wet modes are expanded by the modes in vacuum (dry modes) and solved by the energy method. The added kinetic energy of the fluid is calculated via boundary integration, and the Lagrange equations of the second kind is applied to the fluid-structure coupling equations. Then the wet modes are solved by eigenvalue calculation and the modal mass and stiffness of each order wet mode are obtained. Finally, they are used for establishing a mode superposition approach for response calculations. The accuracy of the present method is verified by ANSYS software. In this method, all the required data are obtained from the structural analysis and the traditional complicated fluid force modeling is no longer required. Thus it has the advantages of high computational efficiency and applicability. Compared to the traditional semi-analytic model, this modeling methodology has broad application potential for vibration problems of complex underwater structures since the structural dry modes can be solved efficiently by commercial software. It also has practical value as a theoretical reference for developing mode-superposition-based calculations for fluid-structure problems using commercial software.

Abstract:From the angle of analyzing the forces acting on the ship, the mathematical model is established ofheaving motion and pitching motion in still water. The calculations of every parameter in the model are pre-sented, and especially the lift forces of hydrofoils are detailed. For the purpose of validating the effective-ness of the mathematical model, based on a hydrofoil catamaran, HC200B, the simulation research is car-ried out, by use of Mablab's Simulink toolbox, so that the elevations and trim angles are obtained corre-sponding to 12 velocity points and the variation of the boat's attitude at the design speed is also obtained.In comparison with the simulation results and experimental data, it is shown that both of them agree wellwith each other, especially in the vicinity of high speed, which exhibits the effectiveness of the proposedmathematical model.

Abstract:Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) parameterization is a geometric modification method, and can quickly obtain excellent structure with low vibration and noise performance. Blindness and inefficiency are common outcomes of the lack of an efficient parameter selection approach. But not enough research has been done in this area. In this paper, the finite element (FE) method is used to establish the propeller–shaft–shell double beam system with ball bearings, which is more similar to the real model. The basic theory of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method is introduced in detail, and the original full order model (FOM) is reduced to 4 DOFs. It is found that the accuracy of the reduced order model (ROM) is high enough and the calculation time is greatly reduced. The semi-numerical semi-analytical expression of the ROM system is solved by the harmonic balance and alternating frequency/time domain (HB-AFT) method, whose results are in good agreement with those by the Runge–Kutta method. The sensitivities of the shell responses to the spring stiffness are discussed. The AUV setup is designed to analysis of numerical and experimental results. These results in this paper can provide an advanced theoretical basis for the structural parameter design of the AUV.

Abstract:In this study, the hydrodynamic performance of a dish-shaped autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH) in waves near the sea surface is examined. The AUH is a novel type of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that has excellent maneuverability and flexibility. The hydrodynamic performance of a dish-shaped autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH) in waves near the sea surface is estimated. An AUH is a novel type of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that possesses excellent maneuverability and flexibility. The employed ANSYS-AQWA, which is well-known hydrodynamic analysis software based on potential fluid theory, is adopted to compute the effects of waves on the AUH in both the frequency domain and the time domain. The validity and accuracy of the proposed approach are verified through a comparison of results of a spheroid-model case with relevant literature results. First-order wave forces and moments in six degrees of freedom are analyzed at different wave frequencies and submergence depths. Furthermore, the second-order mean wave forces and moments in the heave and pitch directions are determined. The analyses reveal that the wave forces are significant when the AUH operates near the sea surface. Numerical results in the time domain are then acquired under different wave conditions. The proposed approach conveniently and accurately predicts the hydrodynamic characteristics of submerged bodies operating in sea waves.

Abstract:With the scaling up of ship in recent years, the explicit modeling of stiffened plates has made the numerical analysis time-consuming. The coordination of a massive number of elements may even bring the problem of convergence and stability, making the analysis unsolvable. The simplification of stiffened plate is particularly urgent in the nonlinear transient dynamic evaluation due to its small step time. Therefore, a simplified approach based on the stiffness equivalence for two-way stiffened plate is proposed. Firstly, based on the equilibrium and compatibility equations, the stiffened plate with orthotropic geometric properties is simplified as a single plate with orthotropic material properties. Then the load-deformation relationship of the single plate is developed by coupling the in-plane and out-of-plane stiffnesses. Subsequently, the simplified approach is used for the local hull structure to verify the applicability under static loading condition. Besides, a coupling model approach is proposed to avoid the local deformation error caused by the homogenization assumption. Afterwards, the modal analysis is conducted based on the simplified model of whole ship. Finally, the nonlinear transient dynamic evaluation of the whole ship model is performed under various collision conditions. For the modal analysis, the results of the homogenization model are accurate. But the simplification does not provide a significant improvement in computational efficiency. For the static and dynamic analysis, the responses of coupled model have good agreement with the detailed finite element model, while the computation time is significantly reduced. The simplified modeling approach can improve the computational efficiency, convergence and stability in the nonlinear transient dynamic evaluation of large ship.

Abstract:This paper describes a dynamics model of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). External forces acting on the vehicle, such as hull and control plane hydrodynamic forces, are determined for the full 360° angle of attack range. An accurate through-body thruster model is also incorporated into the simulation. The model is used to simulate two configurations of the C-SCOUT AUV. We use the simulation as a predictive design tool to evaluate and compare the performance of the two configurations before they have been fully developed. Two oceanographic sampling missions are devised to help determine the relative benefits of each configuration.

Abstract:To meet the needs of controlling underwater vehicle station-keeping, a model for underwater vehicle heave motion was built up.Based on the feature of the model and assumed that submersible motions are decoupled, static and dynamic methods of identification of the station-keeping model was discussed by means of least square techniques.According to the characteristics of station-keeping course, experimental method was presented.Identification experiment of the damping and equivalent inertia of Goldenfish II was done in laboratory based on the above methods.

Abstract:This paper studies on a new disk-shaped AUV namely "Autonomous Underwater Helicopter" proposed at the Ocean College of Zhejiang University. The reliability of the numerical method is verified by comparison with the experimental data, in which the additional mass of the ellipsoid similar to that of the autonomous underwater helicopter is calculated. Based on the overlapping grid technology of fluid simulation software STAR-CCM+, the hydrodynamic performances of autonomous underwater helicopter in heaving motion and swaying motion are calculated under different inlet velocities and different frequencies, which provides an important references for the subsequent research and design of submarines.

Abstract:Marine risers have been widely used in the oil industry,at the same time,they are one of the weakest parts.The risers generally contain high temperature and high pressure flowing oil or gas and bear the action of marinie enviorment load,especially the wave load,so the endured forces of the risers are very complex.Because most of the offshore oil fields in China are in the shallow water,the experiment and numeric simulation are focused on the risers in the shallow water.The similarity theory is used in the experiment to derive the experimental model from the practical model.Under the external wave load,the dynamic response of the riser model is measured and then compared with the ANSYS numerical simulation result.

Abstract:The AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) of the University of Canterbury targets to discover any foreign organisms residing on the sea chests of ships, which cause a risk for the domestic biodiversity, and removes them. With the design of the AUV finished, the primary goal of this paper is to design control software that stabilizes the vehicle and minimizes the error in the desired trajectory. The dynamical model with implemented assumptions ultimately leads to a decoupled system of non-linear equations in three directions: surge, heave and yaw. For this system, experiments are designed (but not yet successfully accomplished) to identify the system parameters. With respect to control, a feedback linearization is firstly applied to a 1D case, which results in a satisfactory PIDcontroller, taking into account parameter perturbation and noise contamination. Finally, the under actuated problem in the 2D situation is evaluated, for which a path planning method and a state feedback control method is derived.

Abstract:Through numerical simulations, this article aims to minimize the direct sailing resistance and diving resistance and maximize the envelope volume of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with a Myring type shape. After determining the design parameters and resistance simulation methods, a parameterized analysis of the AUV shape is performed in CATIA software integrated with STAR-CCM + software to obtain an approximate model of the AUV shape. The multi-objective optimization is solved using an improved non-dominated sorting algorithm (INSGA-II). The effectiveness of INSGA-II is verified on common test functions and in AUV shape optimization models. The AUV shape-optimization model is based on an improved Kriging model that uses point sampling and point filling strategies. The Pareto solution set of the multi-objective optimization of AUV shape was better optimized to varying degrees from that of the initial solution. Partial solutions to all objective functions were optimized, verifying the effectiveness of the improved Kriging model and INSGA-II.
