Abstract:Exclusive C-donating ligands are rarely used on the kinetically labile heavier alkaline earths (Ca, Sr, Ba). We report herein the aptitude of a NHC-fluorenyl combo with a flexible -(CH2)2- linker as a ligand support for the heteroleptic Ca- and Sr-N(SiMe3)2 and iodides. The Ca-N(SiMe3)2 even catalyzes the intramolecular hydroamination of aminoalkenes to reiterate the same.

Abstract:Catalytic enantioselective conjugate additions with easily accessible alkenylboronic acid pinacol esters as nucleophiles promoted by chiral copper complexes of N-heterocyclic carbenes are presented. These processes constitute an unprecedented instance of conjugate additions of a variety of functionalized alkenyl groups and afford desired products that are otherwise difficult to access in up to 98% yield and 99.5:0.5 enantiomeric ratio. The origins of ligand-controlled enantioselectivity are elucidated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:In recent years N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) have evoked considerable interest, and this can be attributed in large measure to the isolation of a stable imidazol-2-ylidene by Arduengo et al. in 1991. Although the use of NHC as ligands in organometallic reactions has been studied extensively, the study of N-heterocyclic carbenes used as the reaction reagents and catalysts still need to be conducted deeply. The purpose of this passage is to cast some light on the chemistry of NHC as organocatalysts and to inspire organic chemists to pay more attention to this hot field.

Abstract:A catalytic enantioselective conjugate addition with commercially available allenylboronic acid pinacol ester as nucleophile promoted by a chiral copper complex of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) is disclosed. This process constitutes an unprecedented instance of the conjugate addition that introduces an allenyl group into α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, affording products that are otherwise difficult to access in up to 92% yield, >98% allenyl addition selectivity and 96:4 enantiomeric ratio. DFT calculations were performed to elucidate the origins of enantioselectivity.

Abstract:HL center dot(PF6) (L = 2,4-dimethyl-8-phenyl[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a][1,8]naphthyridin-9-ylidene) was synthesized from the nucleophilic reaction of 7-chloro-2,4-dimethyl-1,8-naphthyridine with phenylhydrazine and subsequent acidification, anion exchange, and condensation with triethyl orthoformate. Its silver, copper, cobalt, and nickel complexes [Ag-2(L)(2)(CH3CN)(2)](PF6)(2) (1), [CuL(CH3CN)(2)](PF6) (2), [CuL(phen)](PF6) (3), [CuL(dppe)](PF6) (4), [Co(L)(2)(CH3CN)(2)](PF6)(2) (5), and [Ni(L)(3)](PF6)(2) (6) have been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The copper complex 2 exhibits excellent catalytic activity in the Cu(I)-catalyzed azide alkyne cycloaddition reaction of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxytethered alkynes in an air atmosphere at 50 degrees C.

Abstract:AbstractThe transition‐metal‐catalyzed C−N cross‐coupling has revolutionized the construction of amines. Despite the innovations of multiple generations of ligands to modulate the reactivity of the metal center, ligands for the low‐temperature enantioselective amination of aryl halides remain a coveted target of catalyst engineering. Designs that promote one elementary reaction often create bottlenecks at other steps. We here report an unprecedented low‐temperature (as low as −50 °C), enantioselective Ni‐catalyzed C−N cross‐coupling of aryl chlorides with sterically hindered secondary amines via a kinetic resolution process (s factor up to >300). A bulky yet flexible chiral N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand is leveraged to drive both oxidative addition and reductive elimination with low barriers and control the enantioselectivity. Computational studies indicate that the rotations of multiple σ‐bonds on the C2‐symmetric chiral ligand adapt to the changing needs of catalytic processes. We expect this design would be widely applicable to diverse transition states to achieve other challenging metal‐catalyzed asymmetric cross‐coupling reactions.

Abstract:The mechanism and origins of selectivities in [Ni(NHC)]-catalyzed intramolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions and homo-ene reactions of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) and alkynes have been studied using density functional theory. The preferred mechanism involves oxidative alkyne-alkene cyclization to form a metallacyclopentene intermediate, in contrast to a cyclopropane cleavage pathway in the reaction with Rh(I) catalysts. The selectivity between the (5 + 2) and homo-ene products is determined in the subsequent competing reductive elimination and β-hydride elimination steps. Two similar-sized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, SIPr and ItBu, yielded reversed product selectivity, favoring the (5 + 2) and homo-ene products respectively. This is attributed to the anisotropic steric environment of these NHC ligands, which positions the bulky substituents on the ligand toward different directions and leads to distinct steric control in the reductive elimination and β-hydride elimination transition states.

Abstract:The anionic monocarborane alkyne [12-(HC?C)-CB11H11](-) was employed as a ligand towards Cu(i) to form terminal alkyne complexes. Spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography allowed for a detailed structural analysis of complexes with nitrogen ligands, which are the first examples featuring carborane-C?CH -> metal pi coordination. Addition of phosphines to compound 2 afforded homoleptic Cu(i) complexes [Cu(PR3)(n)](+) (4), in which case the carborane becomes a non-coordinating anion. Polymeric acetylide 5 was obtained in almost quantitative yield from 2 and proved to be a suitable precursor to heterobimetallic Cu(i)/M(ii) (M = Pd, Pt) alkynide complexes with side-on and end-on coordination to the metal centers.

Abstract:The covalent interaction of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) with transition metal atoms gives rise to distinctive frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs). These emergent electronic states have spurred the widespread adoption of NHC ligands in chemical catalysis and functional materials. Although formation of carbene-metal complexes in self-assembled monolayers on surfaces has been explored, design and electronic structure characterization of extended low-dimensional NHC-metal lattices remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a modular approach to engineering one-dimensional (1D) metal-organic chains and two-dimensional (2D) Kagome lattices using the FMOs of NHC–Au–NHC junctions to create low-dimensional molecular networks exhibiting intrinsic metallicity. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory reveal the contribution of C–Au–C π-bonding states to dispersive bands that imbue 1D- and 2D-NHC lattices with exceptionally small work functions.

Bonding of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes on Metal Nanoparticles

Abstract:This work studied the bonding of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) with systematic modifications to their structures, including their wingtips, functional groups, back- bones, metal surfaces, and orientation. We apply two separate analysis methods: en- ergy decomposition analysis with natural orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) and intrinsic bonding orbitals (IBOs). We determined that the binding energy of these systems is described almost entirely by the orbital interaction energy as obtained by EDA-NOCV due to the dispersion being cancelled by the steric repulsion. We further explore the σ and π orbitals and how they change across systems. Finally, bis- complexes were explored via IBO, EDA-NOCV, and energy differences as compared to the monomeric versions. The two σ bonds connected the NHCs to the central Au atom are proposed to be 4-electron, 3-center bonds. We note that this is likely an accurate way to view bonds of monomeric NHCs on metal surfaces as well.

Abstract:N -heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been actively explored over the last 20 years and have become a firmly established ligand class in contemporary transition metal chemistry. The steric properties of these particular carbenes are mainly related to the shape, encumbrance and flexibility of their N-tethered groups, which in general can closely approach a coordinated metal centre and therefore impart high stability to the complexes formed. With regard to catalysis, continuous efforts have been made to make NHCs more efficacious by sophistication of their bulky structure, especially by varying the nature and size of the N -substituents. Herein, we highlight the properties of a less studied family of NHC ligands, namely those having at least one N atom substituted by a bulky 9-alkyl-9-fluorenyl substituent (abbr. A Flu ). Their coordinative and catalytic properties mostly reflect the presence of the extended, flat fluorene component of the A Flu group, which owing to its size favors specific conformations that result in metal complexes in which the metal centre is sterically protected either by the fluorene plane or by the C9-connected alkyl group.

Abstract:Heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbenes) constitute an important family of ligands in transition metal chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. These ligands are used as multidentate ligands for the construction of mononuclear and multinuclear complexes that show unique physical properties and that are efficient catalysts for many organic transformations. A number of transition metal complexes of heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands have been synthesized and structurally characterized in recent decades. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in metal complexes supported by heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands and their applications. The ligands and their complexes are categorized by the linkers between the two NHCs, such as pyridine, bipyridine, phenanthroline, naphthyridine, pyrazole, thiophene, and pyridazine.

Abstract:Rigid terdentate 'pincer' ligands containing a bridgehead N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) donor attract considerable interest as spectators in transition metal complexes with broad scope and potential applications in the fields of catalysis, medicinal chemistry and material science. This review aims at compiling and evaluating the developments occurring in the area of complexes with these ligands. The various donor groups in the side-arms that can be associated with the bridgehead NHC donor provide considerable diversity and tunability of the pincer system. In addition to the distinct structural and reactivity features that are discussed in detail, comparisons with related pincer complexes based on all-classical donor sets or mixed donor sets with NHCs at the side-arm(s) only have been undertaken. The review comprises five major sections: the first attempting to differentiate the NHC bridgehead donor as structural element in the pincer ligand design; the following three describing in detail the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of metal complexes with ligand topologies featuring one, two or three NHC donors, respectively; finally the fifth compiling in a tabular format the catalytic applications of the complexes discussed previously, organized as a function of the catalytic reaction, the metal and the ligand type. The review provides a rationally organized coverage of the literature since 2005 in a diverse and fast expanding field dealing with pincer ligand design.

Abstract:A family of tetra-, penta-, and hexacoordinate nickel complexes of functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been prepared via carbene transfer reactions of Ni(PPh3)2Cl2 and silver-NHC complexes in situ generated from corresponding imidazolium salts and Ag2O. These nickel(II) complexes have been characterized by 1H NMR, 13CNMR, and ESI spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Structural analysis revealed that [Ni(L1)3](PF6)2 (L1 = 3-butyl-1-(5,7-dimethyl-1,8-naphthyridin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 3) is a rare example of a nickel complex with trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. [Ni(L4)2](PF6)2 (L4 = 1-butyl-3-((7-methyl-1,8-naphthyridin-2-yl)methyl)imidazolylidene, 5) and [Ni(L20)2](PF6)2 (L20 = 3-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 21) are normal square-planar. [Ni(L8)3](PF6)2 (L8 = 3-methyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 9), [Ni(L10)2(CH3CN)](PF6)2 (L10 = 3-ethyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazol-ylidene, 11), [Ni(L12)2(CH3CN)](PF6)2 (L12 = 3-butyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 13), [Ni(L14)2(CH3CN)](PF6)2 (L14 = 3-benzyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 15), and [Ni(L16)2(CH3CN)](PF6)2 (L16 = 3-isopropyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 17) are pentacoordinate, displaying unusual square-pyramidal geometry. [Ni(L12)3](PF6)2 (L9 = 3-butyl-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylid-ene, 19), [Ni(L22)2(CH3CN)2](PF6)2 (L22 = 3-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 23), and [Ni(L24)(CH3CN)(H2O)] (L22 = 3-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-1-(pyrimidin-2-yl)imidazolylidene, 25) are octahedral complexes. The structural diversity of these nickel(II) complexes originating from steric pressure of the ligands is discussed.

Abstract:N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are nowadays ubiquitous and indispensable in many research fields, and it is not possible to imagine modern transition metal and main group element chemistry without the plethora of available NHCs with tailor-made electronic and steric properties. While their suitability to act as strong ligands toward transition metals has led to numerous applications of NHC complexes in homogeneous catalysis, their strong σ-donating and adaptable π-accepting abilities have also contributed to an impressive vitalization of main group chemistry with the isolation and characterization of NHC adducts of almost any element. Formally, NHC coordination to Lewis acids affords a transfer of nucleophilicity from the carbene carbon atom to the attached exocyclic moiety, and low-valent and low-coordinate adducts of the p-block elements with available lone pairs and/or polarized carbon-element π-bonds are able to act themselves as Lewis basic donor ligands toward transition metals. Accordingly, the availability of a large number of novel NHC adducts has not only produced new varieties of already existing ligand classes but has also allowed establishment of numerous complexes with unusual and often unprecedented element-metal bonds. This review aims at summarizing this development comprehensively and covers the usage of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of the p-block elements as ligands in transition metal chemistry.
Development of Quinoline-Derived Chiral Diaminocarbene Ligands and Their Transition Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Catalytic Properties

Abstract:N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) bearing a fused tricyclic skeleton have recently been developed as a new type of promising ligands for asymmetric transition metal catalysis. In this article, two kinds of chiral tricyclic NHCs featuring partially reduced 2,2′-bisquinoline- and 2-(piperidin-2-yl)quinoline skeleton have been prepared via a direct asymmetric hydrogenation synthetic strategy. Their Rh- and Pd-complexes were synthesized and characterized by NMR and high-resolution mass spectra as well as X-ray crystallography. The electronic effect and steric environment of these new chiral tricyclic NHCs were systematically evaluated by determining the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) and the percent buried volumes (%Vbur) of the corresponding metalated complexes. It was revealed that these new ligands possess strong electron-donating properties and high steric demands. Additionally, these chiral NHC ligands have been successfully employed in the enantioselective palladium-catalyzed intramolecular α-arylation in high yield with good enantioselectivity (up to 80% ee). It is noteworthy that the rigid fused tricyclic rings and bulky ortho substituents can greatly improve the electron-donating property and chiral induction ability of these chiral NHC ligands.

Abstract:Sandwich compound-based planar chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands having a bulky η5-cyclopentadienyl-cobalt-η4-tetraphenylcyclobutadiene core were developed, and their donor strengths were evaluated by determining the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) of the Rh dicarbonyl complex. The TEP was high at 2048 cm-1, as expected for an NHC ligand. The utility of the carbenes as chiral ligands was examined in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric ring-opening reaction of oxabenzonorbornadienes with benzylamine, and the corresponding products were obtained with moderate enantioselectivities (up to 66% ee).

Abstract:This study investigated the catalytic behavior of NHC-X ligands (X = F, Cl, Br, I) in cycloaddition reactions, focusing on both mononuclear and binuclear pathways. Using NCI (noncovalent interaction), RDG (reduced density gradient), ELF (electron localization function), and LOL (localized orbital locus) computational analyses, the electronic interactions and stability of the ligands were examined. The results showed that NHC-Cl exhibited the least steric hindrance and strongest transition state stabilization, making it the most efficient catalyst. NHC-F also demonstrated strong stabilization, particularly in the binuclear pathway. In contrast, NHC-Br showed moderate efficiency, whereas NHC-I was the least effective owing to higher Gibbs free energy values and greater steric hindrance, especially in polar solvents such as water and acetonitrile.
