Abstract:Supported bimetallic nanocatalysts have attracted extensive attention in catalysis related to environmental remediation because of their unique performance. In order to fulfill their catalytic tasks under real operating conditions, these nanocatalysts should maintain their structural, chemical, and thermal stability. However, the maintenance has been challenging. Herein, we developed a Pd–Pt bimetallic nanocatalyst stabilized by magnesia–alumina spinel (MgAl2O4) on an alumina support. The stabilization of MgAl2O4 on the catalyst was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. During aging treatment, the structure of the catalyst showed insignificant changes without the sintering of the palladium and platinum nanoparticles. The formation of a less-active Pd–Pt alloy was depressed, and the active Pd species in the oxidized state was maintained. In a model reaction stimulating the abatement of methane emitted by natural gas vehicles, the catalyst completely converted methane at a low temperature (427 °C). After aging, this temperature increased by about 20 °C. By contrast, the aged analogous catalyst without MgAl2O4 stabilization failed to fulfill the complete conversion even at 550 °C.
