Abstract:Corona discharge treatment at atmospheric pressure was applied to initiate the graft polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate onto the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The results indicated that MWCNTs were encapsulated by poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA). The blue shift and the increased I-D/I-G value of the Raman spectra confirmed the covalent attachment of PHEMA onto the surface of the MWCNTs. The grafting degree depended on the processing time of corona discharge, as demonstrated by thermogravimetric analysis. The dispersibility of the PHEMA grafted MWCNTs (PHEMA-g-CNTs) in ethanol was dramatically improved. It was also found that PHEMA-g-CNTs can improve the dynamic mechanical and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites more effectively than the pristine MWCNTs.
Mechanisms for Strong Adsorption of Tetracycline to Carbon Nanotubes: a Comparative Study Using Activated Carbon and Graphite As Adsorbents.

Abstract:Significant concerns have been raised over the presence of antibiotics including tetracyclines in aquatic environments. We herein studied single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) as potential effective adsorbents for removal of tetracycline from aqueous solution. In comparison, a nonpolar adsorbate, naphthalene, and two other carbonaceous adsorbents, pulverized activated carbon (AC) and nonporous graphite, were used. The observed adsorbent-to-solution distribution coefficient (K-d, L/kg) of tetracycline was in the order of 10(4)-10(6) L/kg for SWNT, 10(4)-10(6) L/kg for MWNT, 10(3)-10(4) L/kg for AC, and 10(3)-10(5) L/kg for graphite. Upon normalization for adsorbent surface area, the adsorption affinity of tetracycline decreased in the order of graphite/SWNT > MWNT >> AC. The weaker adsorption of tetracycline to AC indicates that for bulky adsorbates adsorption affinity is greatly affected by the accessibility of available adsorption sites. The remarkably strong adsorption of tetracycline to the carbon nanotubes and to graphite can be attributed to the strong adsorptive interactions (van der Waals forces, pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor interactions, cation-pi bonding) with the graphene surface. Complexation between tetracycline and model graphene compounds (naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene) in solution phase was verified by ring current-induced H-1 NMR upfield chemical shifts of tetracycline moieties.
Influence of Ph and Surface Oxygen-Containing Groups on Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes on the Transformation and Adsorption of 1-Naphthol.

Abstract:The pH-dependent behavior, including the transformation of 1-naphthol by oxidative polymerization to form precipitates in solution and the adsorption of 1-naphthol onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs), was examined. Neglecting the precipitate loss of 1-naphthol and possibly of similar chemicals may result in the overestimation of their adsorption and inadequate interpretation of the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Surface oxygen-containing groups on CNTs and the dissociated species of these groups can interact with the dissociated and neutral species of 1-naphthol in a way similar to polymerization, thus promoting the adsorption of 1-naphthol onto CNTs. Adsorption onto CNTs may reduce the polymeric precipitates of 1-naphthol in solution by possibly decreasing aqueous 1-naphthol concentrations. These observations and the underlying mechanisms are important for predicting the fate and risks of naphthalene and carbaryl in the environment because 1-naphthol is a primary metabolite of naphthalene and carbaryl. In addition, it is possible to enhance the removal of 1-naphthol and similar chemicals by controlling the pH and designing specific surface functional groups for CNTs.
Competitive Adsorption Of Naphthalene With 2,4-Dichlorophenol And 4-Chloroaniline On Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Competitive adsorption between nonpolar organic compounds and polar ionic organic compounds (IOCs) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is essential for application of CNTs as superior sorbents and for environmental risk assessment of both CNTs and organic contaminants. It was observed in this study that adsorption of neutral and dissociated species of polar 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and 4-chloroaniline (PCAN) on a multiwalled CNT sample (MWCNT15) can be suppressed by nonpolar naphthalene. Naphthalene adsorption can also be suppressed by neutral DCP/PCAN, but not dissociated DCP/PCAN. Moreover, competition of naphthalene decreased the adsorption affinity of neutral DCP/PCAN, but not their adsorption capacity because of the formation of solute bilayer on MWCNT15. For dissociated DCP/PCAN, naphthalene not only decreased their adsorption affinity but also their adsorption capacity because no solute bilayer was formed. Neutral DCP/PCAN also decreased the adsorption affinity and adsorption capacity of naphthalene. These observations indicate that competitive adsorption of naphthalene with DCP/PCAN depends on the dissociation of DCP/PCAN, as interpreted by (i) the different sites on CNTs for adsorption of organic chemicals (i.e., naphthalene, and the neutral and dissociated species of DCP/PCAN), (ii) the interactions between organic chemicals, and (iii) the interactions of organic chemicals with CNT surface.

Abstract:Adsorption of single-ringed N- and S-heterocyclic aromatics on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was examined to explore the potential of using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as drug carriers and environmental adsorbents. Adsorbates included pyrimidine, 2-aminopyrimidine, 4,6-diaminopyrimidine, thiophene, benzene and aniline. Adsorbents included pristine SWCNTs, oxidized SWCNTs, and nonporous graphite. Adsorption of N- and S-heterocyclic aromatics was significantly enhanced by non-hydrophobic interactions. Particularly, the –NH2-substituted compounds exhibited much stronger (up to 2 orders of magnitude) adsorption affinities to oxidized SWCNTs than benzene, even though they are much less hydrophobic. The π–π coupling or electron donor–acceptor (EDA) interactions are likely adsorption-enhancement mechanisms for all six compounds. The lone-pair electrons of the N heteroatoms and the –NH2 group can enable n–π EDA interactions with SWCNT surfaces. Lewis acid–base interactions are another significant adsorption-enhancement mechanism for the –NH2-substituted compounds (and possibly for pyrimidine) on SWCNTs. For the N-heterocyclic aromatics, adsorption affinity is highly dependent on the O-functionality of the SWCNT surface and on solution pH, due to the speciation reactions of both adsorbates and SWCNT surface O-functional groups, indicating that selective adsorption of N-heterocyclic aromatics is possible by combining the surface functionality of CNTs and solution chemistry.

Abstract:The presence of sulfonamide antibiotics in aquatic environments has been recognized as an issue warranting consideration. In this study, we evaluated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) as a potential effective adsorbent for removal of two sulfonamide antibiotics, sulfapyridine and sulfamethoxazole, from aqueous solutions. Nonporous, functionality-free graphite was included as a comparative adsorbent. Despite the very low hydrophobicity, the two sulfonamides adsorbed strongly to MWNT and graphite, a fact attributed to pi-pi electron coupling with the graphene surface of the adsorbent. For both sulfonamide antibiotics, similar patterns of pH-dependent adsorption were observed between MWNT and graphite, implying the predominance of graphene structures for the adsorption to MWNT. Moreover, the observed pH effects on adsorption indicate that the protonated neutral form of sulfonamide adsorbs much more strongly than the deprotonated anionic counterpart does. The effects of ionic strength (NaCl and CaCl2) and the presence of a dissolved soil humic acid on adsorption of the two antibiotics to MWNT and graphite were also assessed. Ring current-induced 1H NMR upfield chemical shifts further verified face-to-face complex formation between neutral sulfamethoxazole and model pi-electron donor compounds (naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene) in solution.

Abstract:Adsorption kinetics of two organic compounds on four types of carbonaceous adsorbents (a granular activated carbon [HD4000], an activated carbon fiber [ACF10], a single-walled carbon nanotube [SWNT], and a multiwalled carbon nanotube [MWNT]) was examined in aqueous solutions. The times needed for the adsorption to reach apparent equilibrium on the four carbons followed the order of ACF10>HD4000>SWNT>MWNT. Ultrasonication of the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) accelerated their adsorption kinetics but had no effect on their equilibrium adsorption capacities. The pseudo-second order model (PSOM) provided good fitting for the kinetic data. The fitting of kinetic data with the intraparticle diffusion model indicated that external mass transfer controls the sorption process in the organic compoundCNT systems, whereas intraparticle diffusion dominates in the sorption of organic compounds onto activated carbons. Adsorption and desorption of doxorubicin on oxidized carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) show promise as nano-drug carriers. To develop the CNT-based drug delivery systems, drug loading and release are two major issues. In this study, we systematically evaluated the adsorption and desorption of doxorubicin (DOX) on oxidized multi-walled CNTs (O-MWCNTs). Our results indicated that O-MWCNTs possessed a huge adsorption capacity for DOX (9.45×103mg/g). Although the adsorption process was quite slow, the adsorption capacity kept high enough for the therapy while shortening the incubation time to 2h (1.03×103mg/g). The desorption of DOX from O-MWCNTs scarcely occurred while incubated in buffer solution at both pH 7.4 and pH 5.5, however, the lower pH did benefit the desorption. The presence of serum proteins facilitated the desorption of DOX significantly, because these proteins bound strongly to O-MWCNTs resulting in the partial surface of O-MWNCTs being occupied. Moreover, the adsorption time also affected the release of DOX from O-MWCNTs. Shortening the incubation time benefited the release of DOX. The implications to the drug loading and therapeutics of the CNT-based drug delivery systems are discussed.

Abstract:The relatively low surface area and micropore volume of carbon nanotubes limit their potential application as effective adsorbents for hydrophobic organic contaminants. In this study, KOH dry etching was explored to prepare activated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) for adsorption of model monoaromatic compounds (phenol and nitrobenzene) and pharmaceutical antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, and tylosin) in aqueous solutions. With activation, the specific surface area was increased from 410 7 m(2)/g to 652 8 m(2)/g for SWNT and from 157.3 m(2)/g to 422.6 m(2)/g for MWNT, and substantial pore volumes were created for the activated samples. Consistently, adsorption of the test solutes was enhanced 2-3 times on SWNT and 3-8 times on MWNT Moreover, the activated carbon nanotubes showed improved adsorption reversibility for the selected monoaromatics, as compared with the pristine counterparts, which was attributed to the more interconnected pore structure and less pore deformation of the activated adsorbents This is the first study on the adsorption/desorption of aqueous organic contaminants by KOH-activated carbon nanotubes The findings indicate that KOH etching is a useful activation method to improve the adsorption affinity and adsorption reversibility of organic contaminants on carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:This study provides deep insight into the adsorption process of doxorubicin onto different types of carbon nanotubes that have been proved to show attractive properties as a drug delivery system. The main aim of the work was to propose probable adsorption mechanisms and interactions between the anticancer drug and surface of modified and pristine carbon nanotubes at blood pH. The carbon nanotubes were oxidized to optimize the absorbance efficiency relative to that of pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The adsorption isotherm of the modified system was well described by the Temkin equation. It confirms that the adsorption in the system studied involves also hydrogen and covalent bonding and is exothermic in nature. The experimental kinetic curves of adsorption were fitted to different mathematical models to check if the kinetics of doxorubicin adsorption onto the modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes follows a pseudo-second-order model and the chemical sorption is bound to be the rate-limiting. On the basis of the molecular dynamics simulation, it was shown that in vacuo the aggregation tendency of doxorubicin molecules is far more favorable than their adsorption on pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs). It suggests that only functionalization of the nanotube surface can affect the interaction between doxorubicin and functional groups of the carriers and increases the efficiency of the drug loading process.

Abstract:A nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction was proposed to synthesize porous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to avoid their aggregation in solution. Hydroxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-OH) were reacted with different concentrations of rigid decafluorobiphenyl (DFB) to form the different CNTs-based adsorbents (CNT-DFB0.9, CNT-DFB1.8, CNT-DFB2.7 and CNT-DFB3.6). Among them, CNT-DFB1.8 exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for carbamazepine (CBZ) and tetracycline (TC) due to its higher specific surface area and pore volume than powdered CNTs. The proposed reaction was verified and the textural properties of the CNT-DFB adsorbent were characterized. The CNT-DFB1.8 adsorbent exhibited faster adsorption for CBZ than TC, and the maximum adsorption capacities for CBZ and TC were 403.0 and 456.5μmol/g respectively, according to the Langmuir fitting. With the increase of solution pH, TC adsorption on CNT-DFB1.8 decreased while CBZ adsorption increased. In addition, a simple thermal method was applied to regenerate the spent CNT-DFB1.8 by heating in air at 400°C, and the adsorption capacity changed little in the five adsorption cycles. This study provided a novel method to increase the dispersion of CNTs in the prepared adsorbent, showing the potential application for the removal of pharmaceuticals in water or wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Understanding adsorptive interactions between organic contaminants and carbon nanotubes is critical to both the environmental application of carbon nanotubes as special adsorbents and the assessment of the potential impact of carbon nanotubes on the fate and transport of organic contaminants in the environment. The adsorption of organic compounds with varied physical-chemical properties (hydrophobicity, polarity, electron polarizability, and size) to one single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) and two multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was evaluated. For a given carbon nanotube, the adsorption affinity correlated poorly with hydrophobicity but increased in the order of nonpolar aliphatic < nonpolar aromatics < nitroaromatics, and within the group of nitroaromatics, the adsorption affinity increased with the number of nitrofunctional groups. We propose that the strong adsorptive interaction between carbon nanotubes and nitroaromatics was due to the pi - pi electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between nitroaromatic molecules (electron acceptors) and the highly polarizable graphene sheets (electron donors) of carbon nanotubes. Additionally, we attribute the stronger adsorption of nonpolar aromatics compared to that of nonpolar aliphatics to the pi-electron coupling between the flat surfaces of both aromatic molecules and carbon nanotubes. For tetra chlorobenzene, the bulkiest adsorbate, adsorption affinity (on a unit surface area basis) to the SWNT was much stronger than to the two MWNTs, indicating a probable molecular sieving effect.

Abstract:We systematically studied effects of pH, ionic strength, and presence of Cu2+ (50 mg/L or a dissolved humic acid (HA, Fluka) (50 mg/L) on adsorption of three nonionic aromatic compounds, naphthalene, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, and 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene to single-walled carbon nanotubes. Presence of Cu2+ or variance in the ionic strength between 0.02 and 0.1 M (NaNO3) only slightly affected adsorption affinities. Presence of HA reduced adsorption of the three compounds by 29-57% for CNTs, as measured by change in distribution coefficient(K-d),and by 80-95% for graphite. In contrast to nonporous graphite, whose surface area was completely accessible in adsorption, CNTs formed aggregates with microporous interstices in aqueous solution, which blocked large HA molecules from competing with the surface area. Changing the pH from 2 to 11 did not affect adsorption of naphthalene, while it increased adsorption of 1,3-dinitrobenzene and 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene by 2-3 times. Increasing pH apparently facilitated deprotonation of the acidic functional groups (-COOH, -OH) of CNTs, which promoted the pi-electron-donor ability of the graphene surface, therefore enhancing pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions of the two nitroaromatics (pi-electron acceptors).

Abstract:Porous carbon is commonly used in the effective removal of antibiotics from water. The geometry of nanopores plays a vital role in determining the adsorption properties of porous carbon. Aiming to reveal the adsorption mechanism and the dependence on the porous geometry, the mass transfer and adsorption performance of tetracycline (TC) in various shaped carbon nanopores was observed in this study by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results show that the molecular diffusion of water and TC in nanopores is confined than that in bulk solution. The mass transfer in cylindrical through pores (THC) is more efficient than that in blind pores. The accumulated presence probability of TCs within the nanopore of THC is over twice as high as in the blind nanopores. THC exhibits the best adsorption rate and capacity in this study, and the adsorption ability of the blind nannopores follows the order BHC-Cy (cylindrical blind pore) > BHC-Co (conical blind pore) > BHC-Sp (spherical blind pore). Both the cylindrical and bottom surface in BHC-Cy are effective adsorption sites, while the adsorption is seldom found in the bottoms of BHC-Co and BHC-Sp. Surface diffusion of adsorbed TC molecules along the carbon surface was investigated. The sphere-shaped blind pore was found unfavorable for the adsorption of TC from water.

Abstract:Doping heteroatoms in carbon nanotubes can substantially enhance the electronic polarizability of the carbon surface and thus may facilitate adsorptive interactions of organic contaminants. Here, the adsorption isotherms of three polar/ionizable emerging organic contaminants, bisphenol A. tylosin, and tetracycline from aqueous solutions to synthesized heteroatom nitrogen-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (N-MCNT) were compared with those to commercial non-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (MCNT) at pH similar to 6. N-MCNT exhibited much stronger adsorption (3-4 folds higher sorption distribution coefficients, K-d) towards the three adsorbates than MCNT. The hydroxyl group-substituted bisphenol A molecule is rich inn-electrons and thus interacts with the polarized pi-electron-depleted N-heterocyclic aromatic ring on N-MCNT via pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction, whereas the protonated amino group and enone groups in the tylosin molecule are deficient in electrons and interact with the neighboring pi-electron-rich aromatic ring on N-MCNT via cation-n and n-n EDA interactions, respectively. The tetracycline molecule contains both electron-rich moiety (phenol ring) and electron-depleted moieties (protonated amino group and enone groups), which interact with the corresponding pi-nelectron-acceptor/donor sites on N-MCNT. The proposed adsorption mechanisms were tested by the effects of ionic strength (NaCl or CaCl2), co-present Cu2+ ion, and changing pH on adsorption, and further adsorption behavior of a model organic cation (tetraethylamine). These results indicate that enhanced adsorption of emerging organic contaminants to carbon nanotubes can be achieved by doping with heterocyclic nitrogen atoms to facilitate specific EDA interactions. Adsorption of Polyhydroxy Fullerene on Polyethylenimine-Modified Montmorillonite

Abstract:The environmental behaviors and potential ecotoxicity of carbon nanomaterials, such as fullerene and its derivatives, are gaining ever-increasing concerns at present. This work attempts to develop an adsorbent for the effective removal of polyhydroxy fullerene (PHF) from aqueous solution, which was synthesized by modifying montmorillonite (Mt) with a branched polymer polyethylenimine (PEI). The adsorption results showed that the obtained adsorbent (i.e., PEI-Mt) could effectively remove PHF over a wide range of solution pH; both the electrostatic attraction and hydrogen-bond interaction between PHF and PEI-Mt contributed to the strong adsorption. Decreasing solution pH and rising PEI loading amount on Mt could both increase the adsorption amounts of PHF on PEI-Mt. The adsorption isotherms could be well fitted with the Langmuir model, and the calculated maximum adsorption value of PHF on 10%PEI-Mt reached ~213mg/g, much higher than that on the original Mt (~16mg/g). The adsorbents after PHF adsorption were further characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The results suggested that the adsorbed PHF primarily existed on the outer surfaces of PEI-Mt. This work showed that PEI-Mt can be a potentially efficient adsorbent for the removal of PHF from aqueous solution.
Adsorption capacity of different types of carbon nanotubes towards metronidazole and dimetridazole antibiotics from aqueous solutions: effect of morphology and surface chemistry

Abstract:The effect of surface chemistry and morphology of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on their adsorption capacity towards dimetridazole (DTZ) and metronidazole (MNZ) antibiotics from water solutions was investigated in this work. The CNTs studied were single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), CNTs doped with nitrogen (N-CNTs), multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs), and MWCNTs functionalized with carboxylic groups (MWCNT-COOH). The experimental adsorption equilibrium data were best interpreted with the Redlich–Peterson (R-P) isotherm model. At T of 25 °C and pH of 7, the capacities of adsorption decreased as follows: SWCNT > MWCNT > N-CNT ≈ MWCNT-COOH, and the maximum capacities of SWCNT towards MNZ and DTZ were 101 mg/g and 84 mg/g, correspondingly. The SWCNT had the highest adsorption capacity because SWCNT presented the largest surface area, and was the only nanomaterial with a basic surface. The adsorption of both antibiotics on the CNTs was predominantly ascribed to the π-π stacking. The basic groups promoted the π-π stacking interactions and favored the adsorption capacity towards MNZ and DTZ. The capacity of SWCNT for adsorbing MNZ was lessening substantially by reducing the pH from 11 to 2, and the electrostatic interactions caused this trend. The Sheindorf–Rebuhn–Sheintuch adsorption model interpreted the data for the competitive adsorption of DTZ and MNZ on SWCNT adequately.

Abstract:Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) have attracted increasing research interests for the purpose of biomedical application because they provide not only nanostructured topography, but also chemical composition of pure carbon atoms, as well as ultra high strength and excellent flexibility. Regarding the interactions of nanomaterials to biological systems, non-specific adsorption of plasma proteins is one of the most important issues to be concerned, which plays a crucial role that would determine how biological systems response to the biomaterials. Motivated by application of SWNT materials in biomedical fields, in this study, the adsorption behaviors of plasma proteins on the surface of SWNT nonwoven, prepared directly by floating chemical vapor observation and energy deposition method were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and ELISA. Results indicated the SWNT non-woven showed a clear adsorption preference of fibrinogen over albumin. There was no human serum albumin detected using above analysis methods on the SWNT nonwoven even incubated in the albumin solution of 4 mg/ml. While more than 0.15 microg of human fibrinogen was detected by ELISA on the SWNT nonwoven with area of 40 mm x 40 mm incubated in the fibrinogen solution of 5 microg/ml. In addition, IgG of sheep-anti-human serum fibrinogen exhibited strong nonspecific adsorption on the surface of SWNT nonwoven. The adsorption behaviors are different significantly from those of other carbon materials and conventional biomaterials. The unique interaction of SWNT nonwoven to plasma proteins is of significance to further studies of blood cells responses.
