Abstract:The quantum Rabi-Stark model, where the linear dipole coupling and the nonlinear Stark-like coupling are present on an equal footing, are studied within the Bogoliubov operators approach. Transcendental functions responsible for the exact solutions are derived in a compact way, much simpler than previous ones obtained in the Bargmann representation. The zeros of transcendental functions reproduce completely the regular spectra. In terms of the explicit pole structure of these functions, two kinds of exceptional eigenvalues are obtained and distinguished in a transparent manner. Very interestingly, a first-order quantum phase transition indicated by level crossing of the ground state and the first excited state is induced by the positive nonlinear Stark-like coupling, which is however absent in any previous isotropic quantum Rabi models. When the absolute value of the nonlinear coupling strength is equal to twice the cavity frequency, this model can be reduced to an effective quantum harmonic oscillator, and solutions are then obtained analytically. The spectra collapse phenomenon is observed at a critical coupling, while below this critical coupling, infinite discrete spectra accumulate into a finite energy from below.

Abstract:We study the many-body localization problem in the non-abelian SU(2)-invariant random anti-ferromagnetic exchange model in 1D. Exact and sparse matrix diagonalization methods are used to calculate eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian matrix. We investigate the behaviour of the energy level gap-ratio statistic, participation ratio, entanglement entropy and the entanglement spectral parameter as a function of disorder strengths. Different distributions of random couplings are considered. We find, up to L = 18, a clear distinction between our non-abelian model and the more often studied random field Heisenberg model: the regime of seemingly localized behaviour is much less pronounced in the random exchange model than in the field model case.

Abstract:In this article we investigate no-resonance conditions for quantum many body chaotic systems and random matrix models. No-resonance conditions are properties of the spectrum of a model, usually employed as a theoretical tool in the analysis of late time dynamics. The first order no-resonance condition holds when a spectrum is non-degenerate, while higher order no-resonance conditions imply sums of an equal number of energies are non-degenerate outside of permutations of the indices. This resonance condition is usually assumed to hold for quantum chaotic models. In this work we use several tests from random matrix theory to demonstrate that the statistics of sums of eigenvalues, that are of interest to due to the no-resonance conditions, have Poisson statistics, and lack level repulsion. This result is produced for both a quantum chaotic Hamiltonian as well as the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. This implies some models may have violations of the no-resonance condition or "near" violations. We finish the paper by generalizing important bounds in quantum equilibration theory to cases where the no-resonance conditions are violated, and to the case of random matrix models.

Abstract:We quantize graphs (networks) which consist of a finite number of bonds and vertices. We show that the spectral statistics of fully connected graphs is well reproduced by random matrix theory. We also define a classical phase space for the graphs, where the dynamics is mixing and the periodic orbits proliferate exponentially. An exact trace formula for the quantum spectrum is developed in terms of the same periodic orbits, and it is used to investigate the origin of the connection between random matrix theory and the underlying chaotic classical dynamics. Being an exact theory, and due to its relative simplicity, it offers new insights into this problem which is at the forefront of the research in quantum chaos and related fields.

Spectral crossover in non-hermitian spin chains: comparison with random matrix theory

Abstract:We systematically study the short range spectral fluctuation properties of three non-hermitian spin chain hamiltonians using complex spacing ratios. In particular we focus on the non-hermitian version of the standard one-dimensional anisotropic XY model having intrinsic rotation-time-reversal ($\mathcal{RT}$) symmetry that has been explored analytically by Zhang and Song in [Phys.Rev.A {\bf 87}, 012114 (2013)]. The corresponding hermitian counterpart is also exactly solvable and has been widely employed as a toy model in several condensed matter physics problems. We show that the presence of a random field along the $x$-direction together with the one along $z$ facilitates integrability and $\mathcal{RT}$-symmetry breaking leading to the emergence of quantum chaotic behaviour indicated by a spectral crossover resembling Poissonian to Ginibre unitary ensemble (GinUE) statistics of random matrix theory. Additionally, we consider two $n \times n$ dimensional phenomenological random matrix models in which, depending upon crossover parameters, the fluctuation properties measured by the complex spacing ratios show an interpolation between 1D-Poisson to GinUE and 2D-Poisson to GinUE behaviour. Here 1D and 2D Poisson correspond to real and complex uncorrelated levels, respectively.

Scattering Spectra Models for Physics

Abstract:Physicists routinely need probabilistic models for a number of tasks such as parameter inference or the generation of new realizations of a field. Establishing such models for highly non-Gaussian fields is a challenge, especially when the number of samples is limited. In this paper, we introduce scattering spectra models for stationary fields and we show that they provide accurate and robust statistical descriptions of a wide range of fields encountered in physics. These models are based on covariances of scattering coefficients, i.e. wavelet decomposition of a field coupled with a point-wise modulus. After introducing useful dimension reductions taking advantage of the regularity of a field under rotation and scaling, we validate these models on various multi-scale physical fields and demonstrate that they reproduce standard statistics, including spatial moments up to 4th order. These scattering spectra provide us with a low-dimensional structured representation that captures key properties encountered in a wide range of physical fields. These generic models can be used for data exploration, classification, parameter inference, symmetry detection, and component separation.

Spectral form factor in chaotic, localized, and integrable open quantum many-body systems

Abstract:We numerically study the spectral statistics of open quantum many-body systems (OQMBS) as signatures of quantum chaos (or the lack thereof), using the dissipative spectral form factor (DSFF), a generalization of the spectral form factor to complex spectra. We show that the DSFF of chaotic OQMBS generically displays the $\textit{quadratic}$ ramp-plateau behaviour of the Ginibre ensemble from random matrix theory, in contrast to the linear ramp-plateau behaviour of the Gaussian ensemble in closed quantum systems. Furthermore, in the presence of many-body interactions, such RMT behaviour emerges only after a time scale $\tau_{\mathrm{dev}}$, which generally increases with system size for sufficiently large system size, and can be identified as the non-Hermitian analogue of the $\textit{many-body Thouless time}$. The universality of the random matrix theory behavior is demonstrated by surveying twelve models of OQMBS, including random Kraus circuits (quantum channels) and random Lindbladians (Liouvillians) in several symmetry classes, as well as Lindbladians of paradigmatic models such as the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK), XXZ, and the transverse field Ising models. We devise an unfolding and filtering procedure to remove variations of the averaged density of states which would otherwise hide the universal RMT-like signatures in the DSFF for chaotic OQMBS. Beyond chaotic OQMBS, we study the spectral statistics of non-chaotic OQMBS, specifically the integrable XX model and a system in the many-body localized (MBL) regime in the presence of dissipation, which exhibit DSFF behaviours distinct from the ramp-plateau behaviour of random matrix theory. Lastly, we study the DSFF of Lindbladians with the Hamiltonian term set to zero, i.e. only the jump operators are present, and demonstrate that the results of RMT universality and scaling of many-body Thouless time survive even without coherent evolution.

Abstract:We study the quantum correlation and classical correlation dynamics in a spin-boson model. For two different forms of spectral density, we obtain analytical results and show that the evolutions of both correlations depend closely on the form of the initial state. At the end of evolution, all correlations initially stored in the spin system transfer to reservoirs. It is found that, for a large family of initial states, quantum correlation remains equal to the classical correlation during the course of evolution. In addition, there is no increase in the correlations during the course of evolution.
Relaxation Fluctuations of Correlation Functions: Spin and Random Matrix Models

Abstract:Spectral statistics and correlations are the usual way to study the presence or absence of quantum chaos in quantum systems. We present our investigation on the study of the fluctuation average and variance of certain correlation functions as a diagnostic measure of quantum chaos and to possibly characterize quantum systems based on it. These quantities are related to eigenvector distribution and eigenvector correlation. Using the Random Matrix Theory certain analytical expressions of these quantities, for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble case, were calculated before. So as a first step, we study these quantities for the Gaussian unitary ensemble case numerically, and deduce certain analytical results for the same. We then carry out our investigations in physical system, such as the mixed-field Ising model. For this model, we find that although the eigenvalue statistics follow the behaviour of corresponding random matrices, the fluctuation average and variance of these correlation functions deviate from the expected random matrix theory behaviour. We then turn our focus on the Rosenzweig-Porter model of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble and Gaussian Unitary Ensemble types. By using the fluctuation average and variance of these correlations, we identify the three distinct phases of these models: the ergodic, the fractal, and the localized phases. We provide an alternative way to study and distinguish the three phases and firmly establish the use of these correlation fluctuations as an alternative way to characterize quantum chaos.

Krylov Complexity and Spectral Form Factor for Noisy Random Matrix Models

Abstract:We study the spectral properties of two classes of random matrix models: non-Gaussian RMT with quartic and sextic potentials, and RMT with Gaussian noise. We compute and analyze the quantum Krylov complexity and the spectral form factor for both of these models. We find that both models show suppression of the spectral form factor at short times due to decoherence effects, but they differ in their long-time behavior. In particular, we show that the Krylov complexity for the non-Gaussian RMT and RMT with noise deviates from that of a Gaussian RMT. We discuss the implications and limitations of our results for quantum chaos and quantum information in open quantum systems. Our study reveals the distinct sensitivities of the spectral form factor and complexity to non-Gaussianity and noise, which contribute to the observed differences in the different time domains.

Abstract:Glasses have the interesting feature of being neither integrable nor fully chaotic. They thermalize quickly within a subspace but thermalize much more slowly across the full space due to high free energy barriers which partition the configuration space into sectors. Past works have examined the Rosenzweig-Porter (RP) model as a minimal quantum model which transitions from localized to chaotic behavior. In this work we generalize the RP model in such a way that it becomes a minimal model which transitions from glassy to chaotic behavior, which we term the "Block Rosenzweig-Porter" (BRP) model. We calculate the spectral form factors of both models at all timescales. Whereas the RP model exhibits a crossover from localized to ergodic behavior at the Thouless timescale, the new BRP model instead crosses over from glassy to fully chaotic behavior, as seen by a change in the slope of the ramp of the spectral form factor.

Abstract:We study the spectral statistics for quantized skew translations on the torus, which are ergodic but not mixing for irrational parameters. It is shown explicitly that in this case the level-spacing distribution and other common spectral statistics, like the number variance, do not exist in the semiclassical limit.

Abstract:Measuring the power spectral density of a stochastic process, such as a stochastic force or magnetic field, is a fundamental task in many sensing applications. Quantum noise is becoming a major limiting factor to such a task in future technology, especially in optomechanics for temperature, stochastic gravitational wave, and decoherence measurements. Motivated by this concern, here we prove a measurement-independent quantum limit to the accuracy of estimating the spectrum parameters of a classical stochastic process coupled to a quantum dynamical system. We demonstrate our results by analyzing the data from a continuous-optical-phase-estimation experiment and showing that the experimental performance with homodyne detection is close to the quantum limit. We further propose a spectral photon-counting method that can attain quantum-optimal performance for weak modulation and a coherent-state input, with an error scaling superior to that of homodyne detection at low signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:In the present paper we analyze the critical properties of a quantum spherical spin glass model with short range, random interactions. Since the model allows for rigorous detailed calculations, we can show how the effective partition function calculated with help of the replica method for the spin glass fluctuating fields separates into a mean field contribution for the replica diagonal fields and a strictly short range partition function for the replica off-diagonal fields. The mean field part coincides with previous results. The short range part describes a phase transition in a Q^3-field theory, where the fluctuating fields depend on a space variable and two independent time <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://variables.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> we analyze using the renormalization group with dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction of dimensional poles. By generalizing standard field theory methods to our particular situation, we can identify the critical dimensionality as d_c = 5 at very low temperatures due to the dimensionality shift D_c = d_c + 1. we then perform a \epsilon' expansion to order one loop to calculate the critical exponents by solving the renormalization group equations.

Abstract:We consider a non-relativistic quantum particle interacting with a singular potential supported by two parallel straight lines in the plane. We locate the essential spectrum under the hypothesis that the interaction asymptotically approaches a constant value and find conditions which guarantee either the existence of discrete eigenvalues or Hardy-type inequalities. For a class of our models admitting a mirror symmetry, we also establish the existence of embedded eigenvalues and show that they turn into resonances after introducing a small perturbation.
Screwon spectral statistics and dispersion relation in the quantum Rajeev-Ranken model

Abstract:The Rajeev-Ranken (RR) model is a Hamiltonian system describing screw-type nonlinear waves (screwons) of wavenumber $k$ in a scalar field theory pseudodual to the 1+1D SU(2) principal chiral model. Classically, the RR model based on a quadratic Hamiltonian on a nilpotent/Euclidean Poisson algebra is Liouville integrable. Upon adopting canonical variables in a slightly extended phase space, the model was interpreted as a novel 3D cylindrically symmetric quartic oscillator with a rotational energy. Here, we examine the spectral statistics and dispersion relation of quantized screwons via numerical diagonalization validated by variational and perturbative approximations. We also derive a semiclassical estimate for the cumulative level distribution which compares favorably with the one from numerical diagonalization. The spectrum shows level crossings typical of an integrable system. The $i^{\rm th}$ unfolded nearest neighbor spacings are found to follow Poisson statistics for small $i$. Nonoverlapping spacing ratios also indicate that successive spectral gaps are independently distributed. After displaying universal linear behavior over energy windows of short lengths, the spectral rigidity saturates at a length and value that scales with the square-root of energy. For strong coupling $\lambda$ and intermediate $k$, we argue that reduced screwon energies can depend only on the product $\lambda k$. Numerically, we find power law dependences on $\lambda$ and $k$ with an approximately common exponent $2/3$ provided the angular momentum quantum number $l$ is small compared to the number of nodes $n$ in the radial wavefunction. On the other hand, for the ground state $n = l = 0$, the common exponent becomes 1.

Theory for frequent measurements of spontaneous emissions in non-Markovian environment: beyond Lorentzian spectrum

Abstract:The measurement-result-conditioned evolution of a system (e.g. an atom) with spontaneous emissions of photons is well described by the quantum trajectory (QT) theory. In this work we generalize the associated QT theory from infinitely wide bandwidth Markovian environment to the case of finite bandwidth non-Markovian environment. In particular, we generalize the treatment for arbitrary spectrum, which is not restricted by the specific Lorentzian case. We rigorously prove a general existence of a perfect scaling behavior jointly defined by the bandwidth of environment and the time interval between successive photon detections. For a couple of examples, we obtain analytic results to facilitate QT simulations based on the Monte-Carlo algorithm. For the case where analytical result is not available, numerical scheme is proposed for practical simulations.

Abstract:Quantum Monte Carlo data are often afflicted with distributions that resemble lognormal probability distributions and consequently their statistical analysis can not be based on simple Gaussian assumptions. To this extent a method is introduced to estimate these distributions and thus give better estimates to errors associated with them. This method is applied to a simple quantum model utilizing the single-thread Monte Carlo algorithm to estimate ground state energies.
