Abstract:Objective: To establish a good animal model of cervical spinal cord compression and determine whether the evoked potentials results have strong association with spinal cord function and pathological outcome.Metheds: Thirty-two rabbits were divided into four groups randomly. The catheter was inserted into vertebral canal and balloon was gased to compress spinal cord in epidural.According to the diameter of balloon, the animals were divided into 4 groups(Group A,B,C and D).Each group consisted of 8 rabbits.Evoked potentials were used to assess neurological function.Histological studies were performed on part of animals.Pathological samples were observed by light and electron microscope. Results: Spinal cord compression resulted in a gradual decrement in the peak latency and significant increment in the peak amplitude. The biggest difference among the groups was the numbers of hemorrhagic focus in spinal cord.Pathological changes also confirmed increased severity of injury with increasing power of compression. Conclusion: The animal model simplfies and standarizes the experiment.Evoked potentials as a noninvasive technique have great value in monitoring spinal cord function. The variance of amplitude and the latency in SCI correlate with the degree of compression.
