The Longest Night:On the Integrity of Travels of Laocan

Abstract:As a chaptered colloquial novel first published in periodicals,Liu E's Travels of Laocan showed some differences in theme and the descriptive techniques.Compared with other Chinese traditional narratives,it has shows a different communication interaction between the narrator and the reader.Meanwhile,Travels of Laocan made full use of the so-called updated narrative skills once widely used by the writers who were tradition-oriented.How to understand and evaluate the transitional characteristics of Travels of Laocan as a text between the traditional narratives and the modern narratives and how to understand the so-called modernity of Travels of Laocan not only relates to the evaluation of the novel as a narrative text and the evaluation of the colloquial novels of late Qing Dynasty,but also concerns comments about the formality in the(″transitional) period″ from the present-time to the modern time.Generally speaking,most comments on the Travels of Laocan concentrate on classifying it as a genre novel,to be exact,as a political novel or a sarcastic novel,on the descriptive skills which tend to be scientific realism regarding characters,settings,and the plot.However,such comments as made by the native researchers met successive challenges from sinologists abroad in the 1950s and 1960s.The most outstanding representatives were the Czech sinologist J.Prusek and the American C.T.Hsia who spoke highly of the revolutionary contributions of Travels of Laocan to the development of traditional Chinese narratives,particularly regarding to its modernity.They both suggested that the integrity of the text which was less mentioned by the native critics,along with their high compliments to the significance of this integrity to the narratives of the late Qing Dynasty and the development of the whole traditional Chinese narratives.Despite their similarities,their definitions on the integrity of the text of Travels of Laocan differ from each other and even within their own explanations on the same integrity.There are also lots of inconsistencies and contradictions.In fact,through the whole text,the integrity of the narration between the narrator and the theme of the text interwined together through different ways and methods,including not only the completeness of the theme,of characters,of narration,but also including the unity of theme,characters and narration,even the interior balance within every aspect—this balance itself is also a special form of integrity of the text.
