Abstract:Attentional capture is of great importance in revealing the relationship between two kinds of attentional control:bottom-up process and top-down process.The study explored the effect of working memory load on attentional capture,in order to probe into the effect of top-down cognitive control on attentional capture.Two experiments' programs were run on a Dell computer using DMDX.In Experiment 1,we compared capture by a color singleton during visual search between a single-task condition and a dualtask condition in which the search task was combined with a working memory task.The search task was very similar to that in Theeuwes(1992).The subjects were asked to search for diamonds among circles and make a speeded response to the orientation (horizontal or vertical) of a line within it.The subjects in the search task received two conditions:(1) a no color distractor condition, all stimulus being green;(2) a color distractor condition,one of those circles being red singleton distractor.The another task was memory load including two conditions:(1) no memory load;(2) memory load,subjects being asked to rehearse a set of five digits during the search task in order to determine whether a memory probe following the search task was present or absent.In Experiment 2,these tasks were similar to Experiment 2.In this part,memory load included two conditions:(1) high memory load(six digits); (2) low memory load(two digits).The program recorded the response time and accuracy when the subjects performed the memory load and search tasks.All of the dependent variables were analyzed with repeated measure ANOVA.The results showed that(1)The subjects suffered from greater interference by a color distractor during search when they had to rehearse a set of digits.(2) The effect of attentional capture by color singleton increased with the increase of memory load levels.Our conclusions are:Firstly,the cognitive control function of working memory not only affected selective attention but also attentional capture.Secondly,attentional capture was not purely a stimulus driven but was subject to the top-down control.Thus,the higher working memory load,the more the effects of attentional capture produced by the irrelevant singleton.
