Abstract:Since the celebrated theorem of Lax and Wendroff, we know a necessary condition that any numerical scheme for hyperbolic problem should satisfy: it should be written in flux form. A variant can also be formulated for the entropy. Even though some schemes, as for example those using continuous finite element, do not formally cast into this framework, it is a very convenient one. In this paper, we revisit this, introduce a different notion of local conservation which contains the previous one in one space dimension, and explore its consequences. This gives a more flexible framework that allows to get, systematically, entropy stable schemes, entropy dissipative ones, or accomodate more constraints. In particular, we can show that continuous finite element method can be rewritten in the finite volume framework, and all the quantities involved are explicitly computable. We end by presenting the only counter example we are aware of, i.e a scheme that seems not to be rewritten as a finite volume scheme.

Abstract:The main purpose of this review is to summarize the recent advances of the Conservation–Dissipation Formalism (CDF), a new way for constructing both thermodynamically compatible and mathematically stable and well-posed models for irreversible processes. The contents include but are not restricted to the CDF’s physical motivations, mathematical foundations, formulations of several classical models in mathematical physics from master equations and Fokker–Planck equations to Boltzmann equations and quasi-linear Maxwell equations, as well as novel applications in the fields of non-Fourier heat conduction, non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluids, wave propagation/transportation in geophysics and neural science, soft matter physics, etc. Connections with other popular theories in the field of non-equilibrium thermodynamics are examined too.

Abstract:The space-time Conservation Element and Solution Element method （CE/SE method） is a novel high-resolution computational method for equations of conservation law. It has many merits such as the clear physics concept, high accuracy and the simple process of constructing the scheme. This method has a very great future. This paper summarizes the basic principles, the history of CE/SE method, the application fields and the recent advances. The future research topics and the development tendency of the CE/SE method are discussed in detail.

Abstract:It is a key issue for successful atmospheric numerical simulations that how to construct relatively efficient schemes of the original problem. In this paper the spherical shallow water equations are presented as an example. Three schemes, i.e., (i) an explicit energy conservation scheme, (ii) a sympletic‐like scheme, and (iii) a multi‐conservation scheme, are constructed for the equations in different partial differential forms, respectively. Numerical tests show that these different difference schemes conserve the different strongpoints and shortcomings in physical conservation properties and numerical costs because of the different scheme constructions, which provide choice of algorithms according to real applications.

Abstract:Due to the Riemann solver free and avoiding characteristic decomposition, the central scheme is a simple and efficient tool for numerical solution of hyperbolic conservation laws (Nessyahu and Tadmor, J. Comput. Phys., 87(2):314-329,1990). But the theoretical Courant number CFL in order to preserve the invariant region of the numerical solution is very small, and there is lack of the stability proof for nonlinear systems. By adding a lim-iter on the reconstructed slope without requiring clipping condition, we enlarge the value of the CFL to admit larger time step. Then a widely applicable stability proof, which is suit-able for general hyperbolic conservation laws, is given by writing the evolved solution as convex combinations in terms of the Lax-Friedrichs scheme. Some numerical experiments are carried out to verify the robustness.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, fully discrete entropy conditions of a class of high resolution schemes with the MmB property are discussed by using the theory of proper discrete entropy flux for the linear scalar conservation laws in two dimensions. The theoretical resluts show that the high resolution schemes satisfying fully discrete entropy conditions with proper discrete entropy flux cannot preserve second order accuracy in the case of two dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper, the multidimensional limiter for the second order finite volume schemes on the unstructured grid, namely the Weighted Biased Average procedure developed in our previous paper is extended to high order finite volume schemes solving hyperbolic conservation laws. This extension relies on two key techniques: the secondary reconstruction and the successive limiting procedure. These techniques are discussed in detail in the present paper. Numerical experiments shows that this limiting procedure is very effective in removing numerical oscillations in the vicinity of discontinuities. And furthermore this procedure is efficient, robust and accuracy preserving.

Abstract:We consider finite volume numerical schemes for stabilizing dynamics governed by scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws through feedback boundary conditions. Using a discrete Lyapunov function we prove the decay of the discrete solution given by first-order finite volume schemes in conservative form to a desired stationary state up to the order of the time step. Theoretical results are accompanied by a computational example.

Abstract:This paper continues to study the central relaxing schemes for system of hyperbolic conservation laws, based on the local relaxation approximation. Two classes of relaxing systems with stiff source term are introduced to approximate system of conservation laws in curvilinear coordinates. Based on them, the semi-implicit relaxing schemes are constructed as in [6, 12] without using any linear or nonlinear Riemann solvers. Numerical experiments for one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems are presented to demonstrate the performance and resolution of the current schemes.
Graph-based methods for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws using discontinuous space discretizations, Part I: building blocks

Abstract:We present a graph-based numerical method for solving hyperbolic systems of conservation laws using discontinuous finite elements. This work fills important gaps in the theory as well as practice of graph-based schemes. In particular, four building blocks required for the implementation of flux-limited graph-based methods are developed and tested: a first-order method with mathematical guarantees of robustness; a high-order method based on the entropy viscosity technique; a procedure to compute local bounds; and a convex limiting scheme. Two important features of the current work are the fact that (i) boundary conditions are incorporated into the mathematical theory as well as the implementation of the scheme. For instance, the first-order version of the scheme satisfies pointwise entropy inequalities including boundary effects for any boundary data that is admissible; (ii) sub-cell limiting is built into the convex limiting framework. This is in contrast to the majority of the existing methodologies that consider a single limiter per cell providing no sub-cell limiting capabilities. From a practical point of view, the implementation of graph-based methods is algebraic, meaning that they operate directly on the stencil of the spatial discretization. In principle, these methods do not need to use or invoke loops on cells or faces of the mesh. Finally, we verify convergence rates on various well-known test problems with differing regularity. We propose a simple test in order to verify the implementation of boundary conditions and their convergence rates.

Abstract:The development and application of the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method have attracted great attention in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) com- munity in the past decades. The underlying reason for such an intensive investigation is due to favorable properties of the DG method, such as higher order, compactness, and easy parallelization. However, for the compressible flow simulations, the DG method is also associated with unfavorable prop- erties, such as the frequent instabilities in non-smooth regions. Due to the finite element formulation, except the update of the cell averaged conserva- tive flow variable, it becomes rather difficulty to fully understand the physical mechanism in the DG method for the updates of other degrees of freedom in- side each element. In this short note, based on the linear advection equation we are going to analyze the DG method in an alternative way. The results obtained may be useful for the CFD community for its further development of the DG methods.
A filtered embedded weighted compact nonlinear scheme for hyperbolic conservation law

Abstract:In situations where a wide range of flow scales are involved, the nonlinear scheme used should be capable of both shock capturing and low-dissipation.Most of the existing WCNS schemes are too dissipative because the weights deviate from ideal weights in the smooth regions caused by small-scale fluctuations. Moreover, due to the defect of the weighting strategy, the two smooth stencils located on the same side of a discontinuity cannot achieve fourth-order when the discontinuity only crosses S0 or S2. In this paper, we proposed the filtered embedded WCNS scheme which is applicable for complex flow simulations involving both shock and small-scale features. In order to overcome the above deficiency of existing WCNS scheme, a new mapping function is proposed to filter the weights deviation out which can map the weights to ideal weights in smooth region. Meanwhile, the embedded process also implemented by this function which is utilized to improve the resolution of shock capturing in certain discontinuity distributions. The approximate-dispersion-relation analysis indicates that the scheme with the mapping function we proposed has lower dispersion error and numerical dissipation as compared to the WCNS-JS and WCNS-Z schemes. The improved performance is demonstrated by the simulation of linear advection problem and nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws.

Abstract:The discrete singular convolution (DSC) algorithm is a relatively new numerical method. It has not only the advantage of high accuracy of global methods but also the advantage of the flexibility of local methods, and thus has been projected by its proponents as one of the potential alternative approaches to the conventional finite element method, especially for solving problems of structures in high frequency vibrations. Although the progression on the DSC algorithm and its applications is clear from past researches, but this has been scattered over lots of published articles. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the DSC algorithm and the application of the DSC for solutions of a variety of problems in structural mechanics and engineering, which should be of general interest to the computational community. The DSC algorithm is introduced first in a concise and clear manner to help the beginners and engineers who are going to use the DSC algorithm for structural analysis. Emphasis of the review is placed on the DSC analysis of bending, buckling, free vibration and dynamic analysis of structural elements and structures, although the DSC algorithm with a proper singular kernel can solve a wide range of science and engineering problems.

Abstract:This note gives a numerical investigation for the popular high resolution conservative schemes when applied to inviscid, compressible, perfect gas flows with an initial high density ratio as well as a high pressure ratio. The results show that they work very inefficiently and may give inaccurate numerical results even over a very fine mesh when applied to such a problem. Numerical tests show that increasing the order of accuracy of the numerical schemes does not help much in improving the numerical results. How to cure this difficulty is still open.

Abstract:Following the solution formula method given in Dong et al. (High order discontinuities decomposition entropy condition schemes for Euler equations. CFD J. 2002;10(4): 448–457), this article studies a type of one‐step fully‐discrete scheme, and constructs a third‐order scheme which is written into a compact form via a new limiter. The highlights of this study and advantages of new third‐order scheme are as follows: 1 We proposed a very simple new methodology of constructing one‐step, consistent high‐order and non‐oscillation schemes that do not rely on Runge–Kutta method; 2 We systematically studied new scheme's theoretical problems about entropy conditions, error analysis, and non‐oscillation conditions; 3 The new scheme achieves exact solution in linear cases and performing better in nonlinear cases when CFL → 1; 4 The new scheme is third order but high resolution with excellent shock‐capturing capacity which is comparable to fifth order WENO scheme; 5 CPU time of new scheme is only a quarter of WENO5 + RK3 under same computing condition; 6 For engineering applications, the new scheme is extended to multi‐dimensional Euler equations under curvilinear coordinates. Numerical experiments contain 1D scalar equation, 1D,2D,3D Euler equations. Accuracy tests are carried out using 1D linear scalar equation, 1D Burgers equation and 2D Euler equations and two sonic point tests are carried out to show the effect of entropy condition linearization. All tests are compared with results of WENO5 and finally indicate EC3 is cheaper in computational expense.

Meshless Conservative Scheme for Multivariate Nonlinear Hamiltonian PDEs.

Abstract:For multivariate nonlinear Hamiltonian equations, we propose a meshless conservative method by using radial basis approximation. Based on the method of lines, we first discretize the Hamiltonian functional using radial basis function interpolation, and then obtain a finite-dimensional semi-discrete Hamiltonian system. Moreover, we define a discrete symplectic form and verify that it is an approximation to the continuous one and is conserved with respect to time. For time discretization, two conservative methods (symplectic method and energy-conserving method) are employed to derive the full-discretized system. Approximation errors together with conservation properties including symplecticity and energy are discussed in detail. Finally, we present several numerical examples to illustrate that our method is accurate and effective when processing nonlinear Hamiltonian equations with scattered nodes. Besides, the numerical results also confirm the excellent conservation properties of the proposed method.
Applications of Space Time Conservation Schemes to Conservation Laws with Stiff Source Terms

Abstract:The method of space time conservation element and solution element (CE/SE) is a new numerical method. It has many nontraditional features, such as its conceptual simplicity, generality, high accuracy and high shock resolution, etc. But, it will become very complicated when it is extended to multi dimensional cases. So, the ‘CE/SE’ method is modified and a new constructing approach is developed by the authors. The resulting schemes not only maintain all the features which the CE/SE method has, but also are much simpler and easier to be extended to multi dimensional problems in a straight forward manner. This new constructing approach is applied to conservation laws with source terms or stiff source terms, and the corresponding space time schemes are obtained. Numerical results of three flow problems show many advantages of the present schemes.
High order entropy stable schemes for the quasi-one-dimensional shallow water and compressible Euler equations

Abstract:High order schemes are known to be unstable in the presence of shock discontinuities or under-resolved solution features for nonlinear conservation laws. Entropy stable schemes address this instability by ensuring that physically relevant solutions satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality independently of discretization parameters. This work extends high order entropy stable schemes to the quasi-1D shallow water equations and the quasi-1D compressible Euler equations, which model one-dimensional flows through channels or nozzles with varying width. We introduce new non-symmetric entropy conservative finite volume fluxes for both sets of quasi-1D equations, as well as a generalization of the entropy conservation condition to non-symmetric fluxes. When combined with an entropy stable interface flux, the resulting schemes are high order accurate, conservative, and semi-discretely entropy stable. For the quasi-1D shallow water equations, the resulting schemes are also well-balanced.

Abstract:Based on the forced dissipative nonlinear evolution equations for describing the motion of atmosphere and ocean, the computational stability of the explicit difference schemes of the forced dissipative nonlinear atmospheric and oceanic equations is analyzed and the computationally stable explicit complete square con-servative difference schemes are constructed. The theoretical analysis and numerical experiment prove that the explicit complete square conservative difference schemes are computationally stable and deserve to be disseminated.
