Abstract:Objective To study the effects of a tissue-engineered complex modified by basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF)gene on gum regeneration. Methods The study was carried out in Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Stomatology from July 2007 to January 2009.The gingival fibroblasts(GFs)of Beagles were transfected with bFGF gene and incubated on the acellular dermal matrix(ADM)to form a tissue-engineered complex. The complex was placed into the periodontal defect and the effects of tissue regeneration were evaluated by histological examination. Results The attachment loss examination showed that there was no significant difference between gene-modified GFs-ADM complex group and gene-modified GFs group, but the attachment loss in blank control group were significantly higher than the other two groups(P < 0.05).At week 6,the width of keratinized gingival margin in the gene-modified GFs group increased significantly and later at week 12,the width in the two experimental groups significantly increased compared with the control group(P < 0.05).Conclusion The GFs-ADM composite may help to reduce the attachment loss and decrease keratinized gingiva width. However, the effect of bFGF is not certain. The tissue engineering technology can promote gum regeneration.
